Trip to Alaska in a Vans RV-9A

Not my trip (unfortunately), but a very scenic and interesting trip by this YouTube poster. Lots of very low flying in valleys. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNkYIYsggMqSmGQFZe8dyviND5CzAJgnx My sincere apologies if this has already been discussed.

Piper Warrior large engine vibration between 900-1200 RPM

This started right after our last annual. Above 1400RPM, everything seems smooth. It acts the same on either mag. The RPM drop is also about the same on either mag at 1500RPM and 2000RPM if only running on one. No issues before the annual. The mechanic thinks the mags are bad (both of them)...

    Leaky struts on Cherokee Warrior

This has been an issue for years, and it seems that cold weather exasperates the problem. I never find any hydraulic fluid leaking, so my thinking is it must be leaking air (nitrogen) from the schrader valves, and not from the O ring. Or am I wrong, and I really need to buy the strut rebuild...

Online checking of current and pending status of SUA

A few years ago I attended a seminar at Oshkosh regarding this subject. The presenter (military guy) provided this website, where we could see at a glance the current and pending status of MOAs. www.seeandavoid.org It worked great at the time, but when I checked it last week, the MOA status...

New Garmin portable GPS Aera 660 announced

Do we care, or has that ship sailed? The tablet apps are great, but daylight visibility - not so much. At least it's priced semi-competitively this time. My apologies if this has already been discussed. http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/Garmin-Announces-New-Portable-GPS-225760-1.html

    Popping the question with breadcrumbs

Found this in the local paper. I don't know the pilot, but it was really nice to see a "feel good" article about general aviation. http://www.pantagraph.com/news/let-it-fly-man-pops-the-question-via-aerial-tracking/article_b40ce8c1-6332-5f6f-b3df-ebde7ded6da4.html

    The North Forty

Is looking mighty empty right now. I like to arrive early to avoid the rush, and to watch them set up. This year the weather was looking a little iffy tomorrow and Friday, so why not fly in on Wednesday? I'm the first non-volunteer here. :-)

No way would someone start another "Which plane should I buy?" thread!

But I did. :wink2: Current plane - Piper Warrior co-owned with one partner Bothersome limitations - Even though it's fine for puttering around Illinois, it's not suitable for bringing our wives along. My partner also has a home in Florida, and we would like to be able to make that trip...

A little windy at KPNT (Pontiac Illinois)

24G26 45 degrees off runway heading was a little too much for this student pilot and his instructor. No serious injuries, but one person was taken to the hospital to be checked out, and the other occupant refused. I bet I know who refused...

Garmin GDL 39 3D (with attitude)

Except it looks like they aren't using it for Synthetic Vision. Instead you get an AI as part of their patented 6 pack display. I've been holding off on an ADS-B unit (I hate being locked to a particular app), and I like the Pilot, but I really wish they had SV...

    Auto fuel for Lycoming engines

I know there are STCs available through Petersen and EAA for unleaded fuel approval (non-ethanol) on certain engine/airframe combinations, but Lycoming issued the following last April 2013 regarding approved fuels: http://www.lycoming.com/Portals/0/Upload/SI1070S%20Specified%20Fuels.pdf Does...

    POA Etiquette Observations

As a daily reader, but only occasional poster on this message board, I really hate it when I see threads devolve into juvenile name calling. Please don't question your fellow pilot's reading comprehension levels! We pilots are a very small minority of the population, and we need to stick...

    Angle of Attack indicator

My partner and I bought one of these http://www.alphasystemsaoa.com/ at Oshkosh this year. We haven't had it installed yet, but was wondering if anyone in this esteemed audience had any experience with AOA indicators. I know they're common in the military and jets. According to the guy at...

Can running at 65% or less hurt your engine?

So I attended a Wings seminar last weekend, and the presenter emphatically stated that running your engine at anything less than 75% (preferably 85%) and 50 degrees ROP will hurt your engine - as long as you don't go over 400 degrees CHT. This is contrary to everything I've read regarding the...
