Gaston's Fly In 2015 - October 8-11th

2.5 hours one way in the RV-8, of course it would have been 3 days in a Cessna. :lol: ;)

377 statute miles one way.

Great night flight home last night. The sunset was amazing.

39 min and 73 miles. Took longer to,wait for the two old crows trying to fuel their 170 at BDQ last night than the flight....
 
General consensus: Brunch at 10:00, in the restaurant.

Wondered how much closer you were to gastons. I think I was in the air for just over 40 minutes (was getting about 155kts ground speed) so you got me there too...
 
I was hauling the mail home.....
 
Fastest in terms of cruise speed was the Malibu.

However the 310 was faster at inspecting. :)
 
I also wanted to thank the crowd who came out to greet us and make Robert feel special. He may have been shy, but it definitely helped set a good tone for him. Thanks. :)

Next year I think I have to be sure to make it out there, especially after seeing and hearing what's going on out there. Maybe work won't be so hectic lol
 
If you only knew how much I wish I could of been there. But when I did come I always won the award for coming the farthest distance. Over 1200 miles each way. I wanted to fly some more of you into Thunder Ridge.

The stories and the pictures on here and on facebook this morning had me wishing I had made it somehow. I am thinking of trying to make a flight back to my roots In Sherman N.Y. next spring and if you are on that route let me know and maybe I can stop and see you on my way. It looks like you are having a great time as usual. :yes:
 
Gaston's should be on every pilot's aviation bucket list. I went in '09 and would love to go again (life has gotten in the way for the last 5 years).

If you want to OD on aviation, go to Airventure. If you want to fly into a unique little airport and hang out with some fun (and quirky) folks, go to Gaston's.

Gaston's isn't about airplanes, it's about what you can do with an airplane. Gaston's is about the people.

Well put Mark. I enjoyed each time I attended the POA flyin at Gastons. Met some great pilots and wives and children. It is one of those bucket list destinations, for sure, Mark.

Back home 2.3 hours fighting a head wind and one fuel stop. We had a great time and met a bunch of nice people, we are on the return list for sure.
BTW I should win the brightest paint scheme. :)

Sharon and I made it home in 2:15 in her 170. Nice fun little airplane that does all that we need it to do.

Very nice restoration. I wasn't interested as we have a 1948 POLISHED 170 on field where I'm at. But after looking at yours up close, I have to admit you have one VERY fine bird. Even better - I bet your elbows thank you for not having to wax on / wax off regularly ...
 
Tim and I had an issue when getting ready to leave and of course being the last to depart no one else was around. Engine almost died when carb heat was applied. I will let you figure out what the issue was before letting you know what it actually was.


I haven't run the numbers yet but my route of flight for the weekend-ish will be 9D9 OXI H88 3M0 BPK 3M0 XNA 3M0 H88 2M8 RYY (1-2 more places) 9D9.


Currently sitting under the Memphis Bravo waiting for my ride.
 
Dropped Andrew off in little rock and ken and I just landed in 12 gusting 25 and 96 degrees. glad to be on the ground. Ken is going to battle this for another hour on his way back to Austin. I can't wait to see all of the photos and videos everybody has

Teresa and I are home safe. Fun landing in the same winds Bryan described, but on runway 14, so ~ twenty degrees more "exciting"!

EdFred, we had a mechanical issue too. Fueled at KHRO. About 38 gallons per side. Went to sump, and the sump gasket wouldn't reseat. Teresa notices a dribble drip, I come around and poke it again with the Gats jar and it starts streaming out, with the jar removed! She runs for a bucket while the Gats jar fills in about 25 seconds. Bucket takes some fuel before the sump finally reseated on about the twentieth poke. I left it alone after that, under the "if it ain't broke don't poke at it" principle.

I think that plane was at Gaston's this morning. It and a Navion flew up from the Little Rock area for Sunday brunch. Polished aluminum and bright red. Pretty bird.
 
Took off, hit the AC on, autopilot on, and went to 16,000 for smooth air. Headwind slowed us down to a pitiful 166 knots. Easy flight there, easy flight home.
 
Sue and I are safe and sound back in Georgia. About 3 hours. We had a wonderful time making new friends and renewing old friendships, and that's the whole point. Ate too much and enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks to everyone involved. Gaston's 2015 was a great event.

I feel for you. We were only seeing 175 knots on the flight home.
 
We're home. Getting 160kts at times. Cleared through STL's Bravo. Smooth flight at 5500, but had to deal with the 16G23 at home. Luckily, only 20 degrees off runway heading. It was great seeing everyone!

I checked on the 10 room Villa for next year, but it's only available the last 2 weekends in Oct. Kent suggested one of the other large cabins, but I haven't checked availability yet.

I heard somebody else suggest individual cabins but getting that meeting room building behind the fuel pumps for our common activities / late night events.
 
What about the two lodges with the central room and the four cabins off the main room?

I think that may be the larger cabin Kent mentioned. Apparently Kelsie saw one on her walk this morning.

What a great fly-in! As my first POA event (and first grass strip landings...) I really enjoyed meeting you guys! We had a great time meeting POA'ers from all over and getting more acquainted with several local DFW folks. My wife and I are definitely looking forward to Gaston's 2016!
