Oshkosh 2025

I’ve got a 12-pack of Spotted Cow over in Sleepy Hollow if anyone wants it. I ended in the Emergency Room last night around 2am with excruciating belly pain. Looks like I’ve got gallbladder issues. Anyway felling much better after getting some meds but I’m now on a bland, no-alcohol diet until I see my doc back home.

Landed 9:30, uneventful. Eh gads this place is huge. Two shuttle busses just to get in
I’m still trying to get my head straight on just how big this thing is.
I just walked through Scholler for the first time. I had no idea there were that many campers in the universe.
It’s even bigger than what you saw. I’ve driven throughout it this year and it never ceases to amaze me.

Most people don't know how big it is, even if they're there! Pretty much the universal reaction of first timers is "I knew it was big, but I had no idea."

FWIW, the whole thing including the official campgrounds is roughly 2.4 square miles. We all know it's the busiest tower in the world this week, but it also becomes the third largest city in Wisconsin.

I've never been to Burning Man or some of the other big events, but this has to be one of the largest events of any kind.

Dang - you need anything?

We have a new poster child for what not to do on the VFR arrival. The Fisk controller was a Saint with this chucklehead. Runner up was the guy who asked for flight following from the Fisk controllers

Oh man. No telling how much nasty mail he's gonna get - private owner in the registry.

Those controllers are epic. I've already shared the store of when I got stuck behind a Taylorcraft a few years ago and they recognized me trying to do my best to stay out of his tailpipe and gave me some squared off vectors to create spacing so I didn't have to wait out the airshow window to get in. They're awesome.

Same guy took off from a taxiway without permission today. I’m wondering if the FAA talked to him yesterday and told him he wouldn’t be allowed to depart this week, so he just decided to go full “send it”.

Oof. Poor guy. Google-stalking says he's 75 y/o from Bismark, ND. Won an award back in 2016/17 for the number of airports he visited in the state. Probably not as sharp as he used to be, but unwilling to just hang it up. Maybe this trip was on his bucket list and he was just too old to care at this point and wanted to get home.

I was basically a professional hiker for 20 years and there is no way I would try to walk that entire area.

You're lucky you don't have to wait for hours to exit Scholler on Sunday because every RV in the universe is waiting in line to dump its blackwater tank.

You got my curiosity up. I haven't been in Scholler since my very first Airventure visit in 2002... and then I got lucky with a spot right next to the gate not far from the Red Barn. Located approximately in the middle of what is now the Fly Market

Anyway, so I think I managed to grab the gist of the area, based on eyeballing the Scholler map they have posted online
If I'm close, it's very roughly 16,055,681.12 ft² = approx 370 acres

I can’t speak to Jim’s tower tour, but for the B-29 ride, you just give them a lot of money. :)

These are the only two airworthy ones left.

Dave, those old warbirds are a labor of love to keep them airborne. And good lord are they loud. I was able to go with my dad on a B-17 ride down in Jacksonville while he was still barely able to get up in the plane. He had the time of his life, and it was great seeing him think he was younger than actual years

Just saw the B29 take off. I think they rotated and brought the gear up 20 feet from the threshold - they carrying a payload??

Yeah I got that on camera. I was worried for a minute! They had a super gradual climb out.

I did the B29 walkthrough twice and the guys said the left outboard engine is 15 since overhaul, and is absolutely ****ing out oil. They'll only fly VFR, light cross winds, below 10k feet and burn 20+ quarts of oil per hour. Idk if B29s always do that!

Doc will be replacing it here.

Oh cool, how does one do this?
Make friends with your local ATC who happens to work OSH. Sarah (in the picture) is somewhat involved with our EAA chapter and helps us with young eagles, which is how I met her.

Can we order one of those gust fronts every day? Ahhhhhh nice and cool.
Preferably one that doesn't flatten my tent...

Ok, I stayed in N40 last year and S40 this year. Comparative ratings:

North 40
Pros:
Proximity to warbirds, museum, exhibits/forums, town
Bathroom, shower buildings
Short, smooth taxi

Cons:
North of runway is much farther away

South 40
Pros:
Proximity to STOL, UL, Vintage
Busses and trams
Better view of arrivals and departures

Cons:
Porta johns and shower trailers
No food vendors
Long taxi with some rough spots

IMO the biggest negative to the S40 could be easily fixed: a food vendor at the far south market. Very annoying to take a bus and a tram for breakfast.

Looking at the N40 live cam. It looks like the N40 is not very packed this year. Even had room to park the Goodyear Blimp!

I could only go on Tuesday, but it was a blast and I want to go again next year, with a plane.

N40 was filled to avg capacity. The blimp is across the street from N40. You can’t see in your pic but the 2nd blimp is off to the left on the west edge of Pioneer Fueld.

The number of lives he endangered flying in by going the wrong way on Fisk makes me sad. To more than double-down on the idiocy leaves me stunned. Wanton disregard for life.

I would hazard to guess significant cognitive decline and probably needs to hang it up. Unfortunately the FAA tends not to issue Brashers here at Osh so he won’t get deviated for the arrival or departure despite how unsafe both were. Best we can hope for is his friends saw this and have a heart-to-heart with him before hurts himself or worse somebody .

Same guy who flew the creative FISKE arrival in post 725? EDIT - yes, it is the same guy.
