Oshkosh 2025

Landed around 1:30 local after a very interesting IFR arrival to 09 (a first for me) and an eventual landing on 36R!

Anyway plane’s put to bed in HBP and we’ve moved all our crap to the trailer in Sleepy Hollow and I’ve finally got time to enjoy a cold one.

Looks like we got a few inbound! Thanks for riding along!

Unpoplular opinion: Spotted Cow sucks. Totally Naked is their better beer.

I teach the NOTAM to local pilots every year. It's very stressful for someone who hasn't been there. I print and highlight the NOTAMs for them, etc. I always tell everyone, the most helpful thing you can do is watch the EAA videos and any others you can find on YouTube. I watched so many before my first flight in that when I saw the landmarks, I felt like I'd been there before.
Doesn't hurt to have them practice spot landings, either.

Over under on starting at FISKE or starting at Endeavor Mon morning 10:00?
The procedure never starts at Fisk. Ripon is the closest in you'll ever start.

As for where you'll end up Monday morning at 10... Well, good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor.

‘Oshkosh tower, 14 miles south inbound with Whiskey’. Don’t need no stinking Notam.
You will, however, need a good lawyer...

They allow personal grills? Hoping to arrive Monday and camp in my car, was trying to figure out cooking without buying some expensive camping stove.
In Camp Scholler (non-airplane camping), yes, personal grills are fine, as are campfires.

In the airplane camping areas, not so much. Here's the official rules for airplane camping:

No charcoal or wood campfires.

Careful use of white gas or propane camp stoves is allowed in aircraft camping, provided they are used in an area well away from parked aircraft and that the stove is attended at all times . It is strongly recommended that aircraft near the stove be checked for any fuel fumes or leakage, and the stove be elevated above ground level.

Cooking stoves must be a safe distance (10 feet) away from any aircraft.

Ok I need some help/opinions. I'm 10 hrs away from hitting my 1500 hr goal. Since I've done crazier things before and I stayed at a holiday inn recently I'm thinking about flying to Oshkosh today just for the day. Since the main event starts on Monday can I fly in there today stay for an hr then leave?

NOTAM is in effect starting July 17th. Lots of people already arriving and place is getting busy. You'd have to arrive at Basler (the FBO), which requires prior permission.

Ok. Thank you for that information.

Yes it’s totally possible, just understand the VFR arrival procedure and have a sign for GAP for parking and a VFR sign for departure per the NOTAM. No need to go to Basler to park. And have tie downs as you’ll be in the grass off 9/27.

just made the reservation for Basler.
Weather is marginal for me route and I am flying my C150. This is the 2nd craziest thing I've ever done.

Agree 100%— your opinion is unpopular. Unfortunately I’ve only had the opportunity to try their Moon Man which I don’t care for.

ugh I don't know if I can make it.
feels like this event is always on the worst weekend. every year.

Yeah - I knew that. Clutch slipped when I typed that.

Different topic. Always OK to divert on your trip and land somewhere else.

Unable to make it this year. Post pics of the north 40, I was always in the first few rows.
.

How close are you?

Bardstown KY - almost made it to Louisville to see daughter and SIL, spend the day with them and head out in morning.

I might just fly up to son’s place in Chicago area tonight instead of tomorrow morning. (He’s in Valparaiso IN)

It's 7 pm. Made it to DLL for gas but now the weather is moving in and I heard they'll close the airport at 745.
grrrrr
I gotta get out of OSH before they close tonight.

You can check in, but you can’t check out……..

First day volunteering in the books. N40 and Scholler are filling up nicely. Haven’t made it down to Vintage or S40 yet. Roads and fields are in decent shape with a few muddy areas but nothing catastrophic yet. HBP is filling up but I assess HBC to be only half full, maybe a bit more. Vender areas look normal volume as they setup. The RV-15 looks sweet!

Made it to Decatur, IL and grabbed a hotel for the night. Unfortunately there is still a stationary front between me and Wisconsin. Probably looking at some tactical weaving in the morning. Hopefully there by noon.

well I made it to fiske and wing rock but told approach i have to break it off and go home so I don't get locked in. sadly, I must be home tonight. it was so close.
Well, now you know how most of it goes and you can come back with more confidence later in the week. :)

No such thing. There are 8 categories of experimental airworthiness certification and in no world could a 172 or anything similar be certified under the E-AB category.
my c172 has multipurpose AWC, but now operating under Experimental exhibition category....my friends landed it yesterday in Oshkosh from Colorado and tie down somewhere in camping area...not sure where exactly or if they tried for vintage or experimental parking.

thanks for earlier advice on getting in for newbees. seems ground anchors worked great and getting in early Saturday was mostly painless and great advice.

if anyone wants to check it out I'll get their tie down space number.....but it's likely only c172 with a big ,,'flex fuel v8' sticker in the cowl. ..I'll ask them to post photo of it there with better location on our website as well

That storm down south was terrible. flew IFR, VFR, MVFR and everything else to make it to DLL by 7 pm. Then there were pop up storms over the transition points.
I was minutes away from fiske when approach said if you dont make fiske by 8 pm then you're not going to make it. I made it to fiske at 8:01. I think they would have let me land but I had to get out of there yesterday so I told approach I'd like to rock my wings then exit the area to the south.

I rocked the wings then headed home to MVN. Made it home by 1 am. lol
although I was slightly disappointed i didn't land at Oshkosh it was still a good flight because I did hit my magical 1500 hrs doing that. I wanted to take that 1500 hr obligatory picture at Oshkosh but it wasn't meant to be.

Still a good adventure!

I was sitting at the camper listening and heard that request

Spoke too soon. Wall of nastiness across northern Illinois. Hopefully it clears by early afternoon, and I can squeeze in there with everyone else. Looking at about 2 1/2 hours of flying. Maybe I'll play frogger, hop from one green dot to the next.

Odd request made - could use advice.

Got a request from a guy already at Oshkosh, a popular You Tube celebrity and POA poster. To keep things anonymous, let’s refer to him as Five Pappa Delta.

He said he found a way to move up in line to start his new flying job.

He requested I bring him a tarp, foldable shovel, a bag of lime, and a six pack of Lone Star beer.

Key question - where does one get Lone Star beer?
