Gov’t shutdown - Anyone else denied service ?

The shutdown has affected ATC services. I've been training for my instrument rating here in the Seattle area. In this area it's normal during peak busy times for them not to clear practice approaches. About a month ago right after the govt shutdown, they were occasionally not issuing IFR clearances at all. We heard things like, "No GPS, no IFR clearance" (my airplane is equipment SDF). Or, "It's VFR, go fly VFR.". However, yesterday we flew IFR with no problems. The service is inconsistent, at least for those of us flying little bug squashers, and probably will be until things get back to normal.
I haven't seen it. Yesterday I flew from KETB (Wisconsin, just south of KOSH) to T41 (West side of Houston). All IFR, no glitches at all, great service.

Last week, kmaf; notam says ‘cant accommodate vfr traffic’.

I'd be inclined to file pop-up IFR into kmaf as a smartass reply, which I assume would be about 10x the handling that just letting me land VFR would need.

Did an IPC last Tuesday afternoon talked to BOS and PVD no issues very accommodating.

Quick XC yesterday from PYM to BAF all vfr no service issues and everyone seemed pretty upbeat despite the circumstances and it being a busy day.

I'm waiting for Air Force One to get denied clearance. ;)

Haven't confirmed but just saw a video on social media so take it with a grain of salt but it looks like TSA may have walked out in Houston

Well a quick check of the NAS status map shows no delays due to staffing? When there have been its been noted on this site.

Security clearance not always a guarantee at Boeing. About ten years ago, we lost a proposal for a major contract, and several of my friends got laid off, despite the high clearance level. Due to the union contract, they got a *very* nice severance package.

Working out of Seattle is a bit different...unlike LA, there's no similar companies eager to hire you if you leave Boeing. "Tree-huggers," we're sometimes called, due to our reluctance to move out of the area.

At the same time, I was offered (threatened with?) a new job at Boeing. The 767 tanker program was in trouble, and they caught wind of an engineer with a pilot's license, a good familiarity with the Federal aviation regulations, and the ability to write. Wanted to stay with the space programs, so told my boss, "You've got many communications engineers, but few communiCATING engineers. You don't want to get rid of an engineer who can write well and quickly."

Worked a small proposal (only three cleared persons, two of which were managers) and brought in a few bucks, then we got the small space program that turned out to be my swan song before retirement.

Altho the Seattle engineers were union, Colorado isn't. I went thru something similiar. While twiddling my thumbs, St Louis offered a transfer to work on Joint Strike Fighter. I remember the conversation almost 25 yrs ago:
Them: Avionics for JSF
Me: How long have you been in this business?
Them: Huh?
Me: Boeing doesn't do tactical, we do heavy haulers. So, do I want to be unemployed in St Louis or unemployed in Denver? Duh.

end of that phone call.

I believe I was responding to the Houston post. But Dallas and Austin are now on the NAS map which was issued after I posted??
Yup. Ground delays for DAL, DFW, and AUS and flow control for anyone going into D10. Sounds like AUS was actually a ground stop earlier. Ops plan indicates staffing issues may impact the DC area tonight as well.

Let me explain about KCFO....on a Saturday morning, there may be 6-8 airplanes coming/going/pattern. Once a month, maybe, when there's a Young Eagle rally, it gets kinda busy, add another 6 airplanes in the mix. It really doesn't need a tower but 20 yrs ago, UPS and FedEx wanted to use it for distribution (5 miles from KDEN) and the two companies insisted on a tower due to "insurance". So we got a tower. Neither FedEx nor UPS ever used the airport.

But we got a tower.

One of the big flight schools in the area will open a branch in a couple weeks because KAPA is so congested, the locals are complaining about KBJC, and the schools fly here for IFR practice anyway. The sign is up on the trailer, we'll see what happens.

Didn't get to the airport today, hopefully on Wednesday, see what's happening.

One of my neighbors is a federal employee who is not working during the government shutdown. There are a couple of them in my neighborhood. They have "!ncome Protection" at the Navy Federal Credit Union. It amounts to a zero interest loan that kicks in automatically when there is a government shutdown. It doesn't cover everything but it covers about 80% of their pay. There is more than one bank that does this. The ATC guys probably already know about it.

Same with USAA. Wonder how long they will cover if this were to stay protracted (looks like it might be about to end tho).

Depends. As I understand it, NFCU’s offering is a 0% payday loan. That’s gonna hurt when the first paycheck is deposited.

OTOH, USAA’s offering is a short-term 0% signature loan, so hard credit pull each time you apply, but longer payback period.

Neither payback option is going to be ‘easy’ for those taking advantage of either. My wife is a federal civilian. We’ve managed to live within our means and without personal fiscal impact during this shutdown.

I'm hearing this morning that the House passed the CR yesterday and the President signed it. I guess everyone is back at work today and grumpy.

After signing there’s a few things that have to happen for it to be officially enacted as a Public Law. As of 0917 Central this morning, the CR has been signed by the President but it has not been enacted as a Public Law. Once it has been enacted, those furloughed return to work the following duty day.

The excepted employees (those not furloughed) are at work and grumpy though. My wife’s agency has said tomorrow is the tentative first day back for her.

ETA: you can follow along at the link below.

Indeed. I spent my entire day going through 40 days and 40 nights of email after spending the last several weeks practicing for retirement.

FWIW, all the government civilians at my command were notified at 8:30 last night to report to work this morning.

Similar for us, although I was still working, and actually am out on a trip as we speak.

The tricky part is going to be making sure all our back pay is correct (overtime, premium pays, etc.)

My wife got something similar last night. At 0600 today, they got an update to slide 1 day right.

Once the bill was recorded as a Public Law, they got a third call to come in, start telework, or take leave for the rest of the day.

No more extra paid vacation days , back to work. ( well, more like pretend work )

I have not been able to get ahold of the FSDO to complete required documentation for LSRI certification or updated airworthiness certifications.
The LSRI has another issue and just last week the FAA put out a memo stating that no LSRI’s will be issued until the application is updated to include the N numbers of the aircraft on the certificates.

I was able to get ahold of my FSDO last week. They advised that they are waiting for guidance on how to issue these. They said I am number 4 or 5 in their queue. They were very pleasant to speak with.

Do you have a copy of the memo? Its my understanding MOSAIC dropped the requirement to have the aircraft registration listed on the LSRI certificate and leaves that responsibility to the certificate holder to only work on the aircraft they own.

That’s what I was told as well. I’m assuming they are gonna add the aircraft information to the certificate if I had to guess. If you sell the aircraft I would assume the certificate would need to be surrendered as it would no longer be valid.

The carpenter's of rainbow aviation who taught my LSRI class specifically stated that the aircraft is not included on the LSRI certificate. The aircraft airworthiness certificate and the operating limitations are going to be a single document rather than two separate documents.
