2025 - KICKOFF!

One of my Schools, Stanford, will probably win the “Yeah But Trophy” this year. Most inept football team with highest GPA in non gut courses. And the other will possibly get the “It was great while it lasted” Award unless they survive BYU Saturday.

CFB needs a Nerds Conference. Stanford, MIT, CalTech, Ga Tech, etc. Finish the season with the Best Buy Geek Squad Bowl.

OTOH with 9 teams in the top 25 and a requirement to play 9 in-conference games, it's nearly impossible to run the season. Even the worst teams have enough talent to put a scare in the premium programs.

I read somewhere that under the conference champion inclusion rules, if the seeding were done today NAVY would make the playoffs.

Polls are complete BS. Texas A&M trails South Carolina 30 to 3 in the first half Saturday. They have to outscore a crummy 3-7 record team by 28 points in the second half to win by 1, 31-30. The pollsters all congratulate Texas A&M for their resilience and determination, leaving them ranked #3 and solidly in FBS contention. Georgia Tech (original topic in this thread) has had a nearly miraculous season and stands at 9-1. They went back and forth with lowly Boston College, who admittedly they should have beaten easily. GT pulled it together in the 4th quarter, outscoring BC 19 to 6, resulting in a 36-34 win for GT. Yet the pollsters **** all over them for nearly losing, dropping GT from 14 to 16 in the AP Poll and GT is nowhere to be found in the FBS bracket. Total horse ****. Bad enough that we're paying amateur football players $9M to play college ball, resulting in astronomical prices for a decent ticket. But the totally corrupt media twists the narrative to suit their purposes to promote a highly overrated SEC. Go THE Ohio State!

Damn. I really want to tell you that you are full of ****.
But I can't. You are right.

I believe there’s a saying “You can tell an Aggie anything but getting them to believe it is usually impossible if it wasn’t in the curriculum”.

Fantastic marching band though.

Yep. It's nothing new. Check out GT's 1990 season. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_Georgia_Tech_Yellow_Jackets_football_team GT was undefeated that year, beat #1 ranked Virginia, and yet split the championship in the polls with Colorado, who had a loss to Illinois. GT won the UPI Coaches poll but CO won the AP poll.

For that matter, take a look at UCF's 2017 season. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_UCF_Knights_football_team UCF was the only undefeated FBS team, won the conference championship, yet was denied a spot in the playoff series. Nevertheless they were ranked #1 in the Colley Matrix and claimed a national championship despite the $#%^! AP poll.

The polling is biased, nonsensical garbage and could be ignored except for its bearing on championship competition, and rankings and championships have a great influence on team funding and recruiting.

So what would be a better way?

And most of the sports world was laughing at their claims of being Champs.

Sorry but UCF was delusional that year. I could go into an elementary school and beat up a classroom of 3rd graders, but it doesn't make me the heavyweight champion of the world.

You might be right. But since they didn’t get a playoff spot we’ll never know.

And most of the sports world was laughing at their claims of being Champs.

Not really. They were the champion team in the Colley Matrix, which is recognized by the NCAA. I recall a number of sports commentators (ESPN and others) agreeing that UCF had a reasonable claim.

Could UCF have defeated ‘bama? Probably not, but not out of the question, either. UCF beat Auburn that year, and Auburn beat Alabama, so we’d only know for sure if the game were played. UCF even offered to play a post-season game but Alabama declined.

Let the sportswriters to continue to have their polls, but the playoffs should solely consist of Conference champions.

I’m okay with that. At least it would be objective and not just a matter of opinion.

At least we have a playoff. That’s what I like about Match Madness. Even lowly #68 CAN be national champion, they just have to win out.

Unfortunately a march-madness sized football bracket would probably finish with the sweet 16 being played in hospital beds. That means you have to cut the field to a workable size using some metric. Whatever metric you use, be it a computer model or a poll of whoever, is going to leave some parties unhappy every year. In the end, it's a game.

How true. And better than the No Fun League in every aspect.
It has been, and mostly still is, but it is going that way fast.

No Fun League; I like that.
I recently heard a Notre Dame fan call USC "University of Spoiled Children".

X’s and 0’s matter, but so do Jimmys and Joes. There’s a reason why you keep seeing some familiar names at the top of college football rankings. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they have all the good dudes.
Push here : NFL talent

I believe it was Hank Stram, first coach of the KC Chiefs who came up with that phrase.

University of Spoiled Children is the well known name for the Trojans all around the West Coat and well deserved IMNSHO.

Yes, the 1990 season was really BS. Colorado not only had the loss to Illinois. They should have lost to Missouri but due to one of the most aggregious officiating errors in history, the Buffaloes were granted a FIFTH DOWN which allowed them to score the game-winning touchdown. And you are totally correct on UCF getting screwed.

Fifth Down Game (1990) - Wikipedia

Anyone remember the year that #1 Oklahoma got beat by unranked Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game? Then OU went on to continue to play #1 in the BCS championship? 2003? The didn't just get beat, they got embarrassed.

I love that the BCS was supposed to fix all this. Then the playoff. Then the expanded playoff.

Nope - we're all still bitching! :p

(that's part of what makes sports great, IMO)

The only thing it was really designed to do was produce more product and profit for those involved in college football.

If the demand is there, which it clearly is, I have no problem with that.
