2025 - KICKOFF!

That's my point. If you are majoring in recreational management, it really doesn't matter whether you are getting tutored at Texas or Alabama. But engineers at GT or finance majors at Vandy, different story.

Take this FWIW.

Things may have changed (but I doubt it), but when I was at GT the only undergrad degree available that did not require math at least through Diff Eqs was "Industrial Management." Guessing the most popular major for football players is left as an exercise for the reader.

Nevertheless, GT does have an extremely challenging curriculum, absolutely brutal grading, and ridiculously sharp students competing for the top end of the bell curve.

The story today (vs when you and I were there in the 80's) is that IF you can get in, staying in and keeping decent grades is far easier than it was 40 years ago. There may not be a "Gentlemen's B" today (there certainly wasn't then), but there aren't nearly as many "eff you F's" distributed in core classes during your Freshman and Sophomore years.

um, I don't think it's quite that simple... but let's imagine that to be true, I guess that means guys get smarter as the testosterone levels decrease with age, eh?

No, that would be confusing correlation with causation.

That's too bad. I was afraid things might go downhill when they eliminated the requirement to take drownproofing. The word back in the 80s was that whenever drownproofing didn't cause enough attrition, they went on to shockproofing and then bulletproofing.

In the EE school, the first five core classes were for weeding purposes. Tests were designed to force a grade spread (I recall getting a 65 one time that was a high B) so they could cull the bottom third.

For those of you who didn't experience it, drownproofing was a required course for graduation at Tech until Spring Quarter, 1987. Among other things, they tied your arms and legs and made you bob in the deep end to stay alive. It was the afterlife of WWII navy training.

Also known as "Drowning 101."

First two terms in engineering in 1960 had what was generally known among students as “Pre-Business Math”. 8 hours of Algebra and Trigonometry out of 20 credit hours including Physics, Chemistry and Statics and Dynamics and something else. If you placed low on the admission test, you were shuffled to that Math torture. After I survived that, I and one other guy were the only ones out of a class of probably 80 or in that Math Class who made it to graduation.

When I when back to grad school in 1971, grade inflation had moved the average up to a B from the C level for the same basic courses and level of performance. Probably it’s now an A.

Not uncommon across all the entire academic universe.

At my school freshman physics 101/201/301 (back then we had trimesters) was used to weed out the engineering candidates.

Our youngest daughter is a Kent State alumna, so we're partaking a little Maction, even made a dip for it. It's super simple and really good. Only three ingredients, cream cheese, a can of chili, preferably no beans, and an 8 ounce package of shredded cheddar. Spread the cream cheese on a casserole dish, chili on top of that, cheese on top of the chili. Bake in a 350 oven for about 20 minutes, until the cheese melts.

I've been watching the Louisville-Clemson game. I realize it's a Friday night, is that why both teams are playing like high school teams? If this were a postseason game, it would be the Inept Bowl.

I'm questioning how Louisville got to #20 in the rankings.

Today is the day "my team" turns their season around  Go BC!

You can root for a damnyankee school over a brave Atlanta team like Ga Tech?! Gad! I’m pretty sure that’s a felony anywhere south of the Mason Dixon line. And if it ain’t, it oughta be.

...damnyankee...
Reminds me of how my wife's best friend from College of Charleston reacted when learning we were dating, said with a extremely think southern accent: "You're dating a yankee"!

I lived in Atlanta for 10 years. I'm good with whoever wins, although BC doesn't stand a chance.

I dunno; BC is looking decent so far.

My MIL, a southern belle from SC, married my FIL, a damnyankee from Philadelphia, during WWII. For years, her family would just shake their heads and mutter sadly, “Poor Mary. Poor, poor Mary.”

Next week one of my other alma maters, Samford, takes on T-A&M. That’s gonna look like the Steelers playing a Pop Warner team.

A&M might set a new record for the most lopsided game.

Good week for us. Penn State finally got a win, and Kent State won their first away game in a couple of years, which also was their rivalry game. Vanderbilt had the weekend off.

I have watched A&M for many years. They can be having great season then lose to the team with the worst record.

I remember one year against TU someone in the stands set off a fire cracker, and the Texas team left the field.

5 plays later A&M scored a touch down...

aTm still has nightmares about getting dropped 77-0, I bet they aren't overlooking anything at the moment as close as many of their games have been this year.

That was my wedding day. 11/8/03. SWMBO (an A&M grad) still hasn't gotten over the game. I still haven't gotten over getting married.

I was a Junior at OU for that game. The funny part about it was that there was a local pizza restaurant (Hideaway Pizza) which ran a deal for each home game that they'd give a discount on Sunday for their pizza for whatever the spread was on the previous Saturday's game. 77% off of a pizza had lines around the block all day long with college students buying up enough pizza to feed an army. Hideaway didn't do that sales promotion after that season (especially when OU was putting up prolific offensive numbers by that point).

North Texas is ranked for the first time in 66 years. Never thought I'd see the day. Our offense is anchored by two freshman. I'm sure they will both transfer after this year. That is why I'm starting to hate college sports.
