2025 - KICKOFF!

Google says that, being a tech school, they have zany traditions like throwing tortillas on the field. The NCAA apparently does not appreciate the free snacks.
They (the NCAA) should have been at the GT/Maryland game, circa 1995 where they gave out seat cushions. You'd be surprised how far drunken fans (mainly students) can frisbee those things. And how many they throw when there's a bad call on the field...

FYI, the good guys won 31-3, IIRC, so either the call was really bad or the students were really drunk. Or both.

So far, GT’s looking pretty good against Syracuse. But this game should be an easy win for the Jackets.

I was surprised at how well Syracuse did. (At times).
But I'll take a 41:16 win any time.

GT would have had at least two more TDs, if King hadn't made the silly mistake of throwing the ball directly into the hands of his receiver. ;)

King's only problem is that he has a problem catching his thrown balls. If he could do that he would be unstoppable.

Exactly!

IIRC, this is his last year of eligibility, and I think GT will struggle next year without him.

Pyron, the backup, is different but very good. As long as Faulkner (the OC) stays, we're in good hands offensively.

King gets a ton of credit,
but so does Key.

Philo?

I just read that three Tech starters missed the game.
Three starters for No. 7 Georgia Tech have been ruled out ahead of the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets’ matchup against Syracuse at Bobby Dodd Stadium at noon Saturday.
Wide receiver Malik Rutherford, center Harrison Moore and defensive back Jy Gilmore were downgraded to out two hours before kickoff Saturday. The trio had been questionable since Thursday.

(Sorry if it's paywalled).

Brent Key: ‘They didn’t bring any stretchers out for (King) today ... a couple guys trying to tackle him ... got taken off the field, though.’

It is a tough year to be a fan of any SEC team.

I dunno, the relative parity is making for some good games. Nobody is crushing anybody else. Even the bottom half of the conference are tough games.

The conference is too large though.

Aside from Vandy and the Aggies, no team is making it through this season unscathed. That was the point I was trying to make. Seems every week is a huge shakeup in the rankings with all the upsets happening within the conference.

GT remains undefeated, squashed Syracuse yesterday, is #1 in the ACC, yet moved down a notch in the AP poll to #8.

To be honest, it's what I expected.

Until and unless they beat Georgia, no one is going to take them seriously. You have to beat the big guys to be considered one of the big guys. So far, they have only beaten the little guys. Even the Clemson win has been tainted by their continuing performance.

Let's keep hoping they win the ACC and assure themselves of a playoff spot. But to win the National Championship, they will probably have to beat Georgia TWICE.

I'll be very satisfied with a playoff spot. I don't think this team has the talent to compete with the top half dozen teams. The coaching, the effort, all those things are present. But the overall talent is top 30, not top 10, IMO.

Frankly, I think GT has a top 5 QB who’s carrying a top 20 team into the top 10. So far.

The U(sic)GA game should be interesting. I think GT is stronger this year than last, and last year that game went for 8 OTs before the dawgs squeaked out a win.

Some prognostications:

Texas A & M will win the remainder of their regular season games, and will play Alabama for the SEC championship game. If that is the matchup, I'd favor Alabama, as they've played a tougher schedule.

Georgia Tech will win the remainder of its conference games, but will be defeated by Georgia. Tech will play Virginia in the ACC Championship game. I don't follow ACC football very closely, and won't try to predict that one.

Vanderbilt has a good chance to win 10 regular season games, but it won't be easy. If they win both of their remaining home games, which are against unranked Auburn and Kentucky, they still have to beat Texas or Tennessee on the road. I'd be surprised if VU wins all four, and I believe a loss will prevent them from being part of the national championship playoff.

I think we have a really good QB and OC. Key is good leading the program as well. I think uga will take us seriously this year and we may not repeat last year's success against them.

The talent (or overall lack thereof) was on display last night. NC State's offense did whatever they wanted. How/Why? Lack of pass rush, lack of tackling, lack of coverage. Tech has a bunch of average guys on defense, and some of the better "average" guys were on the sidelines with injuries. The OL has regressed from last year and the running backs are mediocre. But I still thought the way to lose this game was 38-35 with a couple of turnovers. I didn't expect the defense to get ripped apart like they did.

Mean Green gave Navy their first loss and moved to 8-1. Our schedule is favorable to win out. School record is 10 wins and we have a shot at 11.

Well, you can scratch beating Texas off that list.

The plucky school with high academics that defies expectations with teamwork and guts is a great story. I went to one of those. But in the long run, the big programs that can field 5 star talent on both sides of the ball and pay them 7 figure NIL incomes are going to win out.

I apologize to Tech fans for predicting that they were going to win out, hope I didn't jinx them. I watched their game last night, they didn't look like a top 10 team to me.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. Texas has better athletes than does Vanderbilt, and I'm not surprised that they won. ESPN had Texas having a 75% chance of winning, and I wasn't surprised at the result. Hopefully the Commodores will win both their remaining home games, and can go to Knoxville in good shape.

I don't believe "high academics" plays as much of a role as it used to.

Think about these kids that change schools every year for a bigger paycheck. If they were true student-athletes, they would never be able to keep up with the changing academics. And if they stayed in school long enough to graduate, they'd probably be too old to play in the pros. I changed schools once and it blew me away.

That's my point. If you are majoring in recreational management, it really doesn't matter whether you are getting tutored at Texas or Alabama. But engineers at GT or finance majors at Vandy, different story.

Figure the percentage of the human race that are in the top 1% of athletic ability and the top 10% of IQ. Especially since IQ and testosterone levels are negatively correlated.

... Especially since IQ and testosterone levels are negatively correlated.

um, I don't think it's quite that simple... but let's imagine that to be true, I guess that means guys get smarter as the testosterone levels decrease with age, eh?
