2025 - KICKOFF!

Just saw GT is continuing the rapid climb through the rankings, spurred on no doubt by not playing this week. We're now at #13.

I was somewhat surprised to see USF in the rankings, at #24. They're 4 and 1, but I don't think they've played any ranked team besides Miami, and Miami obliterated them.

I think #13 is at or above our actual ceiling. We have no game breakers on offense or defense. That'll come to roost at some point. We are well coached, play smart, and give excellent effort, but (IMO) the physical ceiling of this group isn't particularly high.

When you just squeak by Wake Forest, that's probably fair. But hey, ACC Champ should get a berth in the playoffs to find out, right?

USF beat Boise State who was 25 at the time. They also beat Florida who was 13 at the time.

They play us on Friday and somehow we are favored by 1.5.

Gotta get through 6 more ACC games to get there. I suspect the talent/coaching/commitment difference favors Tech in all the games, but we're talking 60-70-80% win probabilities in each game, so odds don't favor a sweep. And IF we make the ACC title game, Miami (assumption) will be a tough draw.

Agreed.

My biggest concern is that we have no offensive breadth. Without King’s running our offense would suck, and it’s just not wise to keep battering the QB by sending him through the line over and over.

I think you are underestimating Philo

Seems to me that our running backs are OK, but we lack a deep passing game. I don't know if that is due to King's problematic shoulder or a lack of speed/talent at WR. Either way, we don't seem to be able to generate chunk plays.

I agree we need a deep passing game. I think King is capable, but the line doesn’t give him enough protection to let receivers get open downfield, and there are too many dropped passes that should have been caught.

The RBs aren’t as good at running as King. We might as well put King in as a RB and make Philo the starting QB. He can hand the ball to King and watch him run.

The 'Horns didn't just fall, they crashed! #27 in the AP poll now. Well-deserved in my opinion. Sooner, you're dead on about the hype. Arch isn't getting any help from the rest of the team either with the overall sloppy and penalty-prone play.

Rcmutz, I'm usually a supporter of OSU unless they're playing Texas. I'm excited to see who can keep up because looking at all the 5-0 teams left, Oregon is the only one who has really impressed me this year so far. Ole Miss has been an exciting surprise and Miami seemingly came out of nowhere this year. I'll gladly share some beers with you on championship night if OSU keeps it up!

Edit: Just took a closer look at the rankings and saw that Penn State fell from #7 to off the chart as well after their loss to UCLA. Holy shakeup! Penn State fans, y'all ok?
Yeah agree about Miami. I think they are looking really good on defense. Just wondering if Beck can keep it up on offense.

So is Belichick, not long ago the toast of the UNC campus, now toast?

I hope not. I admire him. As a military guy, his approach to team building and leadership was a model to emulate. Hate to see a legacy like that tarnished at the end.

One article I read suggested that the team building skills that work with seasoned professional players are different from the skills needed with young college kids. If a different style is needed at UNC than what worked with the Patriots, can Belichick adapt?

There are people that talk about how the pro athletes have to be coddled like the spoiled college and high school children. Think about the players that whine about not getting the ball, caring more about their stats than the team winning.

If the college ranks are only going to have the whiny children, then, yup, the team concept that Belichick uses just won't work.

Eh, it was UNC. They aren't a "football school" to begin with, so I'm not really sure what the expectations were. I doubt anyone looks at his career and thinks any less of him for fighting an uphill battle at a school that few consider to be a contender in football.

History is littered with pro coaches that couldn't make it work in the college game, and vice versa. Has anyone has solid success on both sides?

Oh, and ou sucks!
Pete Carroll had a decent stint in both arenas and won an NC and a Superbowl. It's 12:36PM and Texas Still Sucks!

Jim Harbaugh is another who has jumped back and forth with relative success. Won an NC and played in a Superbowl. He is only 61, so his record is still being written.

On that note...where would Barry Switzer fall?
I think he did well in both NFL (won a Superbowl and 3X NFC East Champs) and dominated in the NCAA, but he just didn't have a long NFL career (4 seasons) to where I'd put him on quite in that same group.

idle question: why do broadcasts have crowd noise so loud? It's not like the announcer and analysts are great, but geez....

35-20 final, GT over VT :happydance:

OTOH, UCF lost to Cincinnati 11-20 :(

Samford had a bye week, so at least they didn't lose again. :dunno:

I suspect that the audio tech is listening on a set of large, high quality studio monitors instead of a little television speaker, and he probably has much wider speaker spacing, creating more stereo separation and thus a more diffused crowd noise.

except using my (decent) surround sound system or not, there is still way the (@*#&$(*@# too much crowd noise. Seems to be worse on Fox.

Yeah, I've noticed it varies game-to-game, station-to-station, but I've never paid attention to whether one network was consistently worse than another. Sometimes switching to mono seems to help.

I’m sitting here n College Station praying that the Awbarn Tiggers create magic this evening against the forces of darkness.

Loving it so far, but too many times I’ve seen Auburn snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the 4th quarter.

Just got back from camping and watching College Football Final on the U. Crazy weekend! I'm very happy. HOOK 'EM! On ESPN.com there's an article with a headline of "Is there a clear-cut favorite in CFB?" What kind of asinine question is that? YES, there's a favorite! In case you haven't noticed, Ohio State is the crystal-clear favorite this year. Miami has been surprisingly good but only OSU has been consistently excellent this year.

Great Arkansas/Tennessee game, too! Sucks the Hogs couldn't pull it off but they definitely held their ground for how bad they've been this year.

Wow! Seems hardly reasonable given their start. Last week was certainly embarrassing but they were holding fast yesterday until the QB got hurt. A shame to be fired in the middle of the season.

Yeah, at least finish the season. Franklin did a lot of good there, brought the program back from near death and was a consistent winner.

I understand what you guys are saying, but when you consider the salary these guys are making, there is no room for pity.
I wish it weren't so, but when you accept a contract for $$Millions, you know you better perform or you're gone.
