    ADF Required?

We're doing some practice approaches this evening and I wanted to find a few new ones to try. I came across this one but it says that an ADF is required (unfortunately I don't have a working ADF) and I don't want to recommend an approach I couldn't actually fly! What about this approach...

    IFR Clearance you Cannot Follow

I had a general question for what happens when you're given an IFR clearance you cannot abide by. In particular, a clearance that takes you over water. For example, I'm planning a flight from Louisivlle to Chicago Midway and I noticed one of the approaches goes over Lake Michigan. We don't have...

    Circling approach protected area

While conducting a practice circling approach in VFR conditions we had to extend our downwind leg portion for landing traffic. During that time I realized that I don't know exactly how far out the protected area extends for a circling approach. I realized I should probably learn that :) Now I...

Understanding Windshear Recovery on Approach and Take-off

Can anyone direct me to some good resources for better understanding of the effects of, and recovery from, wind shear events during approach and takeoff in small GA aircraft? Written or video. I can can't seem to find much on it. Thanks!

    Instrument approaches to grass strips?

On my "bucket list" (maybe not very glamorous) is to fly an instrument approach in IMC conditions to a grass strip. A bit of searching around the Northeast finds only one: 08N, Keller Bros in PA. I could hack something up from FAA databases, but maybe some other crazy soul has done this?

AILERONS vs RUDDER CROSS CONTROL AND LANDINGS

Hello everyone. Recently getting some study for CFI with a friend, we got into a heated argument about controlling the aircraft on approach to landing. I stated that on final, I like to maintain wings level and do small corrections with the rudder for directional control and alignment to the...

How far into the approach with an autopilot

I searched around and couldn't find anything on this. I'm sure someone will prove me wrong :-> I recently went from an airplane with a wing leveler to one with GPSS/coupled approach. At first I used heading and vs mode to the FAF. I started playing around with coupled approaches and thought way...

    Garmin GX simulator

I've started renting a plane with a GX60. I've been flying behind a g400 series so somewhat familiar with the buttonology/knobology. I used the 4xx simulator extensively and found a simulator on the Garmin site for the GXx series. Problem is I can't get it to install on my Win7 SP 1 machine. I...

How to fly LOC RWY 30C approach at KIWA w/out DME?

I'm just learning about IFR approaches and was wondering how I would fly the LOC RWY 30C approach at KIWA (Phoenix Mesa Gateway). The chart has the ILS and LOC approach on the same plate. I'm looking at the version from skyvector.com (it's also attached to this post). The top-left lists the...

    IFR practice approach departure procedure

So I had this happen to me today- ATC clears me for an instrument approach to a nontowered airport, and I say I'm going to do a stop-and-go with momentary delay, and then I'll get my clearance on the ground from GCO. They tell me not to worry about it and just get back with them on the go...

Do you need to listen to station identifier if PFD (e.g. Aspen) identifies it ?

Suppose you set up for an ILS, tune the ILS frequency and the PFD shows the identifier corresponding to the ILS. Do you still need to listen to the identifier to verify the ILS is working ? How does the PFD (e.g. the Aspen) know the identifier of the station you've tuned ? Thoughts ?
