Mustang Mach-E

I rented one and it drove great. My problem came in with finding a charger that worked. At the time you could not use the Tesla fast chargers. I did find one but it was going to take a long time to charge so I took the car back without charging it. I would look at the range and make sure it is sufficient. I think the one I rented had a range of 225 miles.

Wait, what? Where does the display show you that mechanical braking is engaged???

Im going from memory more than a year ago, but there’s a little line that shows acceleration and braking. It changes color when mechanical braking kicks in. I don’t remember the colors it uses.

If Ford had had access to Tesla's charging network when I bought my M3, I would have a Mach-E instead. I love driving my M3, but the styling is questionable.

Single pedal just feels much more natural once you're used to it... And you'll be able to find the neutral spot (or sufficiently close to it) pretty easily once you start driving it. You really don't need to look at the screen, you can just feel that there isn't any significant acceleration/deceleration.

I disagree. I have a few thousand miles with single pedal driving. I still detest it. Same thing on modern touchpads for a computer. The bright guys at Apple/Microsoft said no its like moving a piece of paper and when you slide the paper down your eyes should go up. Works great for some people, absolutely drives me nuts. I have engaged the "reverse mode" in Windows to stop that nonsense.

I get the feeling based on recent changes, Tesla is starting to find out not everyone is the same, and not everyone likes the Kool-Aid they were selling.

I often want to coast, keeping as much surface friction available as possible
Wouldn't the maximum traction be when you are at zero acceleration? Coasting is an acceleration (negative).

My problem came in with finding a charger that worked
That's software and is something that Tesla's software does better than anybody. Many of the others don't do well at all. Generally, those that do the software in house do the best and the legacies, that use supliers, struggle.

IMO, the problem with renting is that the average renter doesn't understand how an EV works so they'll treat it like any other car. Treating an EV like you'd treat an ICE car will lead to frustration.

I'm not sure, but I don't think so. I'll check, next time I drive.

The bar is black when you're under power and green when you're in regen, with the length of the black/green line indicating the amount of power/regen. I don't think there's a third color when braking, but I'll check.

It's subtle. I'm thinking the black turns gray just for the portion that's mechanical. You have to really look for it. They also may have removed it.

when I test drove a tesla a coupl'a weeks ago the one pedal driving was very difficult to get used to, but I know it would only take me a day or so to get it down. once I focused on it, I really liked it, albeit it didn't feel normal to me at all.

Actually no. To maintain speed, you have to provide force to fight against the drag. There are multiple drag forces at play such as surface friction, rolling resistance (tires), powertrain drag.... However the largest drag force is aerodynamic. Therefore to main a constant speed you actually have to provide power to the wheels to "accelerate" and fight the drag.

If you want to maximize the grip of the tires for turning purposes, as a general rule you want to be in neutral. In most automatic cars, with is effectively what coasting does. By coasting or being in neutral, the tires have almost all available traction available to be used to cause a vector change. While if you maintain speed, a significant portion of the traction is used to fight against the drag forces.

When braking, the line will already be green. But, I can't say that I've ever watched the screen while braking as I'm looking at whatever it is that's causing me to brake. I'll check it out.

Yep. Feels very strange at first. By the second day, it was natural for me.

This is all new to me. I currently have a car with two pedals and I think that is not even enough

I don’t mind low regen. There’s a little bit of coasting involved. Normal regen? No way. Too herky jerky. It’s annoying to be pushed forward in your seat belt just by lifting your foot off the accelerator.

I used to like how my Volt did it. It coasted like crazy and still had good regen. There was a stretch of 3 miles coasting I’d take on the way to the airport that would add at least 3 miles range. That same stretch in my S or X hardly adds any range. Coasting on highway or country roads can be more efficient than heavy regen.

The same thing happened to me when I bought my first car, only it had three pedals.

One of my big problems with EVs is how much I enjoy the actual act of driving. I enjoy being the one in minute control of every little speed up and slow down. I even prefer a mechanical throttle in a regular car because it feels more intuitive and reactive to my inputs and the only times I appreciate an automatic transmission are when I am in heavy stop-and-go-traffic or I am so sick, I probably shouldn't be driving in the first place. I don't want software in charge (even if it is "helping"), *I* want to be. I am probably a control freak. :goofy:(Is that reportable on an FAA medical?)

insert clip from iRobot where Del Spooner and Susan Calvin, she asks Del: "What do you think you're doing? Detective Del Spooner: I'm driving"

At some point, that ability will be taken away. I for one find it sad. I get it, it’ll save millions of lives in the long run but it’s taking away a freedom. It’s a freedom not very popular these days though. Look at teenagers. They’re getting fewer DLs compared to their parents. That trend will continue. Most people don’t have a passion for driving. A vehicle is nothing more than something that takes one from A to B. They look at driving as being stressful.

Personally, as long as I still have the physical and mental capacity to drive, I prefer to do it the old fashioned way…maybe I should report that on my medical?

No offense intended, but I don't understand that view at all. To me, one-pedal driving is a much more natural and smoother way to drive (after the first day or two of getting a feel for it).
nor did I mean offense by calling it stupid. Poor choice of words.
I'm looking form an efficiency perspective...well also smoothness.
with one pedal, you are pretty much either burning energy. And fair to say that 100% of teh chemical energy taken from the battery is not converted to kinetic energy
or you are regenerating it. And it's fair to say I think that we all pretty much all understand the regen is not 100% efficient at putting all of the kinetic energy back into the batteries
Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to me that when coasting it's about as close as we can get to using all of the kinetic energy as we can.
so...if you're driving smoothly and thinking way ahead of the car it seems that a driver can be much more efficient than one-pedal will ever be.

Audi applied the "e-tron" tag to both HEV and BEV. Which one was yours?
Mine was a BEV
But for carving up "roller coaster roads" single pedal is awesome.
Now that's a twist that I don't think I ever considered. I can imagine for aggressive driving like that, one pedal driving probably does shine!
I've never really tried to by an extreme "hyper-miler", except to just experiment with teh idea a bit...but I do generally try to drive smoothly most of the time. I never really thought about the racing aspect.

Personally I think both sides over analyze it. I have a Tesla and a Jeep. I jump back and forth between them and don't give braking a thought. It just happens. Well, my foot makes it happen, but still.
First time driving 1-pedal took me all of 5 minutes to get used to it. Maybe it was my cousin's vintage slot-car track that trained my brain. :)

I regularly hop between a 3-pedal driving and a 1-pedal driving on an almost daily basis. No issues whatsoever.

yeah, that's it... a slot car!

I didn't do a lot of that as a kid, but I didn't have any trouble doing the tesla one-pedal either. Only drove one for a short test drive but had no trouble at all getting used to it. I still don't like it though, for other reasons

so, getting back to the Mach-E, does it have a fresh air vent? does the temperature control have a deadband or deadzone? Is it something the user can adjust?

from reading the 2025 Mach-E manual, I think the answers are no, maybe, and no.

I know two families that have them (one a former employee of mine.)
They love them, and for 99% of their use case, they don't need to charge them anywhere but home (but one has free charging at work, and thus uses that.)
Zero issues with either.

Two of my brothers have them.. AAMOF, they bought them together to get a little bit of a discount. There is an issue with the driver side door hinges.

Anyone have problems with the HVJB failing? Recall fixed it?

I tried several heavy brake applications tonight but did not see any change in the regen (green) indicator.

I want this, but could be talked into a mach-e if bluecruise is close to supercruise

Don't know what supercruise is, but bluecruise, on a suitable 4-lane, will come up behind a slower vehicle in the right lane, turn the left turn signal on, move to the left lane, accel to pass, when clear of the passed traffic turn the right turn signal on and return to the right lane...all hands-free. I find it bizarre....it's also $40 a month after the first 4 months, so we'll pass.

We have the AWD version....225 is about right for a 'std' 80 percent charge, but if we're gonna drive it longer-distance we will charge it to 100 percent (per the manual) and have slightly over 300...

Been reading the ride isn’t very good except for the GT performance? Premium is too bouncy and GT is too stiff. GT performance with magna ride is just right.

I figure I'll want to test drive one... but I won't be needing/expecting a supreme driving experience, I just don't drive enough to worry about being super comfy

supercruise is gms driving automation, it was only second to tesla at the beginning of the year, i was really impressed by it during our demo.

automation in my next car purchase is one of my absolutes, after 30 years of driving i want something to do it for me on those highway trips.

Too bad about the range, same problem as the F-150. I'm sure it works fine in civilized places.

My EV has a regen paddle, or you can turn on one-pedal, or you can just use the brakes. The brakes do regen too.

supercruise
As was mentioned, it has the ability to do lane changes automatically, it was one of the first things I turned off. Maybe I'm taking the next exit, maybe I need to be in this lane for some other reason.

Similarly auto-high-beams, those got disabled too, I'd rather turn off the high beams before I see the oncoming car, and not have it randomly toggle them on curvy roads with someone ahead.

hehe too funny, i haven't touched the lights, windshield wipers or even AC since i purchased any of my last 3 cars. the other day, one of the headlights went out in the jeep, it took me like 10 or 15 secs to even remember where the light switch was located.

My other must have feature is a heads up display, man i love it in my current car.

Oh, yea, the stupid electronic controls for the lights are annoying too. Sometimes I just want the headlights on since I live somewhere where it's foggy 300+ days a year. And it's like 3 taps, and it times out, and you have to tap in the right place. Just give me a knob.

i need to ask AI to chart out the best possible time to buy an electric, given depreciation,
what's the sweet spot, 1 year, 2 year, more difficult than picking stocks

Well there’s not super comfy, but then there’s harsh ride. I’ve read some say they get car sick in the non GTs because it’s so bouncy. But you’re right, it comes down to a test drive. I’ve been seriously thinking about trading my M X on one recently so I’m curious about the ride and if the HVJB problems have been resolved.

Looks nice! What's that color called? How does it look matte and glossy at the same time? LOL

Thanks. Yeah it’s called Vapor Blue Metallic. Seems like a lot of these newer cars have a version like this. Like a blue gray combo that looks different depending on the light.

Enjoyed the X but things were starting to fail and the batt / motor warranty ends at the new year. Now I’ve got something that can be maintained by a local Ford dealer and a new 8 yr / 100,000 mile warranty. I actually slightly preferred the ride of the X over the Mach E. Even with magneride, the Mach E is more sporty but a bit stiff. Air suspension is hard to beat but $$$ when it fails. Oh, over $800 less every 6 months in car insurance on the Mach E as well.

The E is sized closer to a Y than an X, no?

I wonder how they came up with that assessment.

Yes it’s equivalent to a Y. About the same size & HP. The X is a bit bigger and about 600 lbs heavier. It’s a smoother ride and slightly better 0-60 but you can feel that extra weight. The Mach E with GTPE upgrade is more sporty. It also has sound piped into the cabin but I think I prefer it with that off. The electric motors are slightly louder and wind noise at 70 mph slightly more than the X but still quieter than most ICE vehicles.

As far as insurance. There just aren’t as many Xs as 3s and Ys so parts are harder to come by. Heard people waiting months after an accident. It’s also all aluminum and has complicated Falcon Wing doors. Strangely it’s the most expensive Tesla but if you crunch the numbers, it has more problems than the rest. Hence the increased insurance premiums.

I don’t call it a Mustang though. Even though it does remind you that it is.
