Didn't find out until today that some family was getting together in Michigan. Airplane came in handy! Turned into a day trip.

That's Chicago in the distance...

one of the signs that makes absolutely no sense to me... This end of the runway is in a field, nowhere near anything. Just industrial buildings several hundred yards away.
Been meaning to ask the airport about it for years.

Chasing the sunset. Lake MI in the distance.

Lake Michigan calm as can be, IRL it almost looked like a perfect layer of cloud tops

And starting right about here is where you cross your fingers and hope the engine doesn't have a hiccup

Building a new taxiway at my home airport. A bit too close for comfort, perhaps.

On the way to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, ATC at Whidbey Naval Air Station instructed me to hold AT 3,500' due to a flight of 2 rapidly closing from my 6:00 position. Shortly after the instruction these two EA-18 Growlers rocketed by. Pretty cool to see them from the air knowing there is no TFR anywhere near me...

Beautiful sunrise 100 miles out before reaching Algona,Iowa.

Then hell broke loose. I'm at 1500 hrs now (so pretty much a total pro) and this was the 2nd time I've experienced severe turbulence. 1st time was last yr with continuous chop and landing with a lot of cross wind. Hit my head on the ceiling 3 times. I lived.
This time I hit my head once but it was a bad one. The headset came off my head and I heard a bang (i think my loose coffee mug in the back seat may have gone airborne). I instinctively looked outside to make sure my wings and tail were still attached. My 600 hr copilot said he hit his head hard too and for a few seconds he didn't know where he was. Anyways, I make my approach and rwy 12 shows headwind. 1 mile final and I had a 10 kt tailwind. abort. come back around for rwy 30. we land. on taxi the winds go back to favoring rwy 12.

Too much fun. i hope i never give that kind of pirep again. I want no excitement today.
