Amelia Earhart's long-lost plane likely located

"Half of the team will traverse the jungle on foot and the other half of the team will sail around the island in their ongoing search. They will have to face challenges as they go, including the island's coconut crabs, meat-eating crustaceans that can grow up to 3 feet tall and weigh nearly 10 pounds."

"A team of researchers appears to be closer than ever in the search for Amelia Earhart’s plane and remains, a mystery that has captivated the world for decades."

They may not find it but could be the closest ever.

They sure seem to be covering a lot of ground for a team that is so close to finding her. Why do I feel like this is an opportunity to get more cool photos that might be used to get more grants to get "even closer?"

Maybe I've just naive but they are making it seem like the location of the artifact (or tree) is so desolate and remote that it'll take days to reach... it looks to me like you could take a dingy through the inlet of the atoll, cross the lagoon and be there in 5 minutes? Or if you had to cross land its not even 1/4 mile across the strip of land from the ocean side to the lagoon side? Maybe I'm missing something...

Edit: ok worst case is 1/3 mile across the widest part. Or 500' if you cross the narrow section and then walk the shoreline.

Not sure where the main vessel would park but we are looking at a 1-2mile dingy ride to the location.

Do you really think the documentary or movie will sell if they don’t have to fight their way through the coconut crabs?

Wasn’t this the one based on photos of something under water in a specific location?
According to the video, yes. Maybe they should start looking where the big red arrow is pointing.

Yes, I think that is actually AI slop used to lure in investors, but still...

I'm surprised no one has tasked AI with reviewing all scans of the ocean floor and islands in the range of where she could have flown with the fuel onboard at max range.

If you zoom in on the aircraft ^^^ it looks very survivable. Maybe the group traversing the jungle will find the two feasting on coconut crabs ... and perhaps grandkids?

Hmmm. I guess they need to eat first and lay around on the beach with the airplane supposedly 30 feet away.

Are coconut crabs good eatin'? Plenty of meat on 'em fellers. Need halfa gallon of melted butter though...

Boston 25 news had a report on this expedition. I was explaining to my crew the conversation we were having here and how much of a ridiculous spectacle they are making for themselves on this mission.

I have $20 on the crabs eating someone.

How many days and they still haven't looked at that specific location that's only 5' deep?

I really hope they get eaten.
Call $20 on the crabs and raise $40 on the sediment dissolved all the aluminum etc and all they find are two dipsticks.

As I tell a friend of mine who graduated from Purdue, this expedition and the prowess of the Football Team in the B1G reflects appropriate glory on the University.

OTOH,if they discover the plane has morphed into a group of logs thru some mysterious heretofore unknown chemical process and the Football Team defeats the Hoosiers in what used to be the annual Indiana Desperation Bowl, a re-evaluation might be appropriate.

The only part of this that I don't understand is why someone would want to take a vacation where there are effectively 3' insects running around trying to eat you?

Unless the crab part is made up, too, to discourage people following them on their trip.

It all reminds me of something my grandfather said once, maybe he borrowed the quote "It's amazing how much effort some people will put into something just to avoid working."

At my grandfather’s wake, his baby brother (at 70 years old, Sam was still “the baby”) told me about a conversation they had after I decided to fly for a living. “David just wants to make a living sitting on his hind end.”

Grandpas have tremendous insight.

The crab part is overblown. That Island was inhabited for a couple of decades in the 20th century. As I recall, the inhabitants left because of reasons that did not include big crabs.

Yes, they are, depending on what they eat. If the food they eat have toxins, the crabs become toxic. Reportedly, they are scarce on islands with people. They are found in the Indian and Pacific oceans.
Is that why the crabs are so big?
They've been large since at least the late 1500's when Francis Drake recorded them. Presumably, the native people on those islands knew they were large before that.

The crabs have tasted man-flesh and are hangry.

Update, there are 5kt winds and a cloud 10 miles away. Too dangerous to investigate and crew retreated to the ship.

Probably find her today ... what are the betting odds?

Atom bomb testing?
IIRC, the issue was commercial viability. There was no real reason to be there.

Also, the biggest garrison (?) on the island was started in 1938. Certainly, if there was evidence of Amelia being there, it would have been found then, not 90 years later.

Lack of fresh water is a steep hill to climb as well

Given the navigation technology of the day, I can see how inability to hold a precise heading would be a problem when aiming for an island in the Pacific.
