Amelia Earhart's long-lost plane likely located

It will likely never end...this today in the NYP:

"Purdue University officials said in a recent statement that researchers will travel to Nikumaroro Island in the Pacific to investigate the Taraia Object, a satellite-imaged anomaly believed by some to be Earhart’s lost Lockheed Electra."

Here we see three aeronautical engineering students laboriously engaged in the search... .

Meanwhile, neither the University of Oklahoma, or Oklahoma State University, are planning
any searches for "Frankenstein's airplane" up at Point Barrow, Alaska.

C'mon, that's fictional. But neither the UO or OSU are planning any searches for Roald Amundsen and his lost seaplane in the Arctic.....

"Frankenstein's airplane" --> Wiley Post's Vega/Orion/Trimotor.

And nobody is looking for that Latham either... one wonders why?

Why is there so much more interest in Earhart's plane than, say, Nungesser and Coley?

One reason is that it's much more fun to go looking around in the south Pacific than Newfoundland. There are others.

Because she was a US media star, not a pair of famous Frenchman. Also, because we know with some certainty that at some point she was close to Howland and <for whatever reason> never located the island. Nungesser and Coli could be almost anywhere between Ireland and the US. That's a heck of a search area and there is little indication "they almost made it", so the chance of a successful "find" is very, very low meaning few people go looking and there's no media coverage.

Here is a new 13 minute video leading up to why they think this object is her plane. And the naysayers...

Not a misleading thumbnail, right? That's a long way to go to look at what is mostly likely a tangle of downed palm trees.

Fifty years ago some dude jumped out of an airplane in the pnw with a bunch of cash…people would probably still be searching for it except the money has deflated to less than the search costs

Part of DB Cooper's money was found decades ago.
"""""""A small portion of D.B. Cooper’s ransom money—about $5,800 in rotting $20 bills—was found in February 1980 by eight-year-old Brian Ingram. He discovered the cash buried in the sand at Tena Bar along the Columbia River near Vancouver, Washington, roughly nine miles from where Cooper is believed to have jumped"""""""

They are on their way!

Expedition hopes to find aviator Amelia Earhart's plane on remote island
“It’s such an amazing opportunity,” said undergraduate Emily Wilson. “My new bikini is so cute!” Fellow student Jacob Jacobsen agreed, saying “Amelia’s airplane would be cooked, but that bikini, bro…..gyatt!”

I feel like this is the aviation version of The Curse of Oak Island.
Could it be???

Always get a kick out of them pulling up a piece of wood and smelling it to determine its age. Or a piece of iron and saying you know it's old because it's heavy.... New iron isn't that heavy. Does make for a fun drinking game though.

Quoting myself, but I definitely think he should've tried selling this to the History channel. If they could milk the Oak Island stuff for 14 years, this has a chance, too.

And make it a survivors type reality show as well.

I hope they get eaten by coconut crabs

"Half of the team will traverse the jungle on foot and the other half of the team will sail around the island in their ongoing search. They will have to face challenges as they go, including the island's coconut crabs, meat-eating crustaceans that can grow up to 3 feet tall and weigh nearly 10 pounds."

"A team of researchers appears to be closer than ever in the search for Amelia Earhart’s plane and remains, a mystery that has captivated the world for decades."

They may not find it but could be the closest ever.
