2025 - KICKOFF!

Can someone explain why Tulane got a playoff slot?

Because of the conference champion inclusion rules. Not even remotely competitive. Seemed obvious to most people, despite their record being 11-2. If only there was a poll or something the CFP committee could have consulted.

Let's see how JMU, the other G5 conferences affirmative action beneficiary, does.

My belief is 9-12 don’t matter. There is a significant drop-off after the first 5-6, and the next 2-3 might have a shot, but 9-12 are never gonna be in it with a real chance of winning. So whether the teams are G5 or Pop Warner isn’t that important.

IMHO, the ACC rankings were hosed. Miami should have played Virginia for the ACC championship instead of Duke. The result was that the ACC didn’t get its champion into the playoffs, and we have two useless games with G5 teams.

Those of us that went to schools in "useless" conferences appreciate the opportunity though.

Nobody is saying your schools or mine are useless. My alma maters will never make the CFP, and they would get crushed if they did. Reference my previous comments about the Venn diagram of humans who can run a 4.4 in the 40 and score 1500 on the SAT.

But IMO the purpose of the CFP is to put the 12 best teams on the field to slug it out in highly competitive games. Yesterday shows what happens when other agendas intrude on that goal. Two blowout games where one team was clearly overmatched right from the start. Even the TV announcers were complaining.

I'm happy for the Tulane and JMU players and fans to have the experience, truly I am. But for the rest of the country, those games were a wasted opportunity. OTOH maybe Notre Dame will see the merits of joining a conference.

I don't disagree about the rankings, and that is a clever take on the consequences.

However, I would observe that the ACC rankings were objective, not subjective, and the criteria were agreed upon by the teams prior to the season.

I realize "poll" is a dirty word, but a poll of disinterested observers would have had a better chance of getting it right.

Do you feel this way about the NCAA basketball tournament? It is the same concept, although bigger.

Granted, but I submit that if the criteria are such that teams can be selected for the conference playoff that will be ineligible for the CFP, the criteria are badly flawed. I suspect no one foresaw that possibility, but it should be considered for next year.

I do not. Football and Hoops are very different games in terms of logistics, program cost, and impact on the human body.

March madness is big enough to include almost 100% of anyone who can actually win out and be champion. I love seeing the early round Cinderella wins, but UNLV in 1990 was the last (and I think only) time a non power five team was national champion

1st family bowl game in the books, we’re 1-0! Next game up now!

Well damn. That was a coaching loss. Terrible clock management and play calling in the last couple of minutes.

I thought the clock management was awful. The play calling? I had no problems with that.

I did have a problem with our MLB getting bulldozed by BYU's QB who pushed him from the 3 yard line into the endzone.

I also thought the broadcast was poor. Too many important plays with no replays. The blocked FG, for instance. Let's look at that. Did BYU's guy blow up the center (that's against the rules)? Dunno. No replay.

Absolutely the worst broadcast was the Snoop Dogg Bowl or whatever the real name is. The whole third quarter the broadcast team were talking to Snoop and not a word about what was going on down on the field.

His football game I guess so he can do what he wants.

Going for the end zone on all 4 of the last plays was a mistake, when they could have settled for a first down and gained a few more tries, and if they’d managed the clock well they would have had time for them.

North Texas finished off their greatest season in school history with a shootout. Now everyone will hit the portal.

Orange, Cotton, Rose, Sugar. Everything else is second string.

Unfortunately, too many teams and players have that attitude, which is a shame. Notre Dame declining a bowl invite was toxic, though I'm happy for GT and BYU getting their fill of toaster pastries.

I guess college doesn't have the concept of offensive pass interference :-/

Ok, playoff games about to start. 4 good matchups. Predictions, anyone?

Mine: Ohio State, Georgia, Oregon, and Alabama. But Indiana will probably make me look like a fool.
