2025 - KICKOFF!

I'll take Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana, and Georgia

I don't have any skin in the game...

edit: of course, opt-outs could have some impact...

so far, 2 for 3.

I'm college football agnostic......

What Group of Five Conference is the team in White from that Indiana toyed with?

Another good matchup.

Disappointed for my son, who transferred to Georgia this year and was in the student lottery for a ticket to the championship if they made it. Wish my Dad, an Ole Miss grad and die hard fan, was around to see the game though.

And beyond hilarious to picture Lane Kiffin right now.

Basically, they are. How many of them do you/we really believe are going to class and doing the work of a college student? ….
I can’t speak for every student athlete, but both programs our son was recruited for went to great pains to provide the NCAA an auditable trail showing something like 10hrs/week in the study hall for the first semester, then each follow on semester was gpa based, but always a non zero number.

That has nothing to do with degree progress nor academic programs tailored to the top tier talent, it’s just a data point.

I will say the college athlete you see on tv is not representative of most college athletes.

He is Scrooge McDuck diving into a pile of cash. Part of his contract with LSU reportedly includes LSU paying him the CFP bonuses he would have gotten from Ole Miss based on their performance.

So LSU paid Kiffin $250k when Ole Miss beat Tulane and are now paying him $500k for the win over Georgia tonight. If they beat Miami next week Kiffin gets another $750k and if they win the title an additional $1m.

The amount of money in college sports has been crazy, gotten ludicrous and is now plaid.

ouch - 2 for 4. flipping a coin would have worked just as well.

So who will make it through the next round? I'm crossing my fingers for a Miami vs Indiana championship game.

I think that's most likely, though I am rooting for the Rebels.

I'm torn. I like Ole Miss, and I'll cheer for any team that beats U(sic)GA, but I'm also compelled to root for the Florida boys. I also would hate to see Kiffin take any more money for not coaching. Loyalties aside, though, I think Miami is the stronger of the two.

From what I've seen from the two teams, I think Miami vs Indiana would be a helluva game and go to the wire.

I think Miami is the stronger of the two.

I think that is probably true. However, two losses against unranked opponents gives me pause. It suggests deeper weaknesses being papered over. Same with Alabama. In nerd terms, the standard deviation of their performance is greater.

Indiana is clearly the most consistent team and I will be surprised if they don't win out. Me saying that pretty much guarantees they won't.

I'd like to see Indiana win it all. Oregon has Nike money. Miami is and always will be ThugU. Ole P!ss can take a hike as well.

Strangest thing. A buddy and I went to a Georgia Tech game at Miami about 5 years ago. We had decent talent but a horrible head coach and the record and play reflected how bad the coach was. Anyway, we were sitting in an endzone with a ton of Miami fans. Think of the crowd in the bar scene in Airplane - more thugs, misfits, and miscreants than you could count. Rougher than 40 grit toilet paper.

Anyway, during the game we start talking with two guys sitting next to us who were dressed as Miami fans - flat bill hats, chains, tat's the whole deal. Rough looking characters. Who were really good guys. From the Atlanta suburbs and who'd adopted Miami as their team.

Ultimately, Tech found a way to win. I figured we were gonna get our butts kicked exiting the stadium but a couple of the roughest looking, just out of maximum security guys you've ever seen (obviously dressed in Miami gear) gave us fist bumps and congratulations on the way out.

Not at all how I envisioned that deal going down.

Lol. Well I was speaking more to their history of dirty play and players getting in heaps of legal trouble. I suspect their fan base is more like the NFL Raiders where they are a motley crew, but generally more bark than bite.

Watching Wake Forest vs Miss State. Might be better than some of the CFP games have been.

Apparently Ole Miss may lose half of their assistant coaches for the next game. All the staff going with Kiffin have contracts with LSU starting 2 Jan.

Who's Lane Kiffin? (OK, I know he is a college football coach, but I don't remember where came from and where he went to for a whole boatload of money, only that money was involved.)

I've had a hard time staying interested in college football since it basically decided it wanted to be the NFL. If I'm going to watch pros, I'll watch the ones who've been doing it longer and better. I'm very pleased to have stuck with the Seahawks for >20 years, since the Cardinals never did much when I was living in Arizona and the Bears never did much when I was living in Chicago; during the Chicago years, I followed the 49ers, who were from my home area (and it was the Joe Montana years). I was quite happy with the Broncos when I was living in Colorado--that was during the Elway years. But the Seahawks have had two awesome runs since I moved here, including the current awesome run. I'm hoping for a Seahawks Super Bowl again.

He just quit as head coach for Ole Miss, in the middle of the playoffs, to take a job as head coach at LSU. He took about half his staff with him. Ole Miss will go into the semifinal playoff game, facing Miami, with half their coaching staff gone.

I quit watching NFL several years ago when the teams began showing disrespect during the National Anthem. Seemed rather hypocritical to call themselves the National Football League....

How did the contract not specify that you can't quit until the season is over? I know it's all about money, but to leave your team in the semi finals? Yikes.....

Yeah, that was annoying, but they got over themselves.

Bowl games/playoffs are post-season, but given enough money, almost every contracr can he bought out on any given day.

Reportedly LSU accepted one of Kiffins demands they pay whatever bonuses he would have accrued for Ole Miss’ post-season performance. Talk about laughing all the way to the bank.

I imagine if there were a financial penalty, LSU paid it. As I understand things, the bonuses Kiffin would have received for playoff wins are being paid to him by LSU.

OK - contract should have included "Post Season". Any football games until Feb 1.....

I get your point. If someone is willing to pay a stupid amount of money I guess any contract can be broken.

To the earlier post - it might actually be entertaining to have players switch sides / teams during a game. Want to turbo charge that? How about during a play. Guy catches a pass, gets a wad of cash from the sidelines, and then turns a completed pass into an interception. Continual shifting alliances.

in college, the RB could tackle the QB.

That was the entertaining part of it. Kiffin wanted to stay and coach the Ole Miss playoff run after accepting the LSU job. Ole Miss would not allow that.

The issue is that the signing period and transfer portal open up in December. LSU hired him in late November because they expected him to begin building their team for next year. If Kiffin stayed in the job at Ole Miss, he would have a clear conflict of interest.

Kiffin cannot do anything without maximum drama, so he held off on announcing his decision while he attempted to coerce Ole Miss. That led to a will-he-or-won't-he standoff on the decision deadline, a media stakeout that rivaled the selection of a new Pope, and a departure from town with an angry crowd chasing him to the airport.

The hilarious part is that every Kiffin job ends this way. Google his previous departures from Tennessee, USC, Alabama, and the Oakland Raiders.

The former QB for one of my schools, University of Cincinnati, just got a reported cool $5,000,000 from Texas Tech and has transferred (along with his girlfriend who is a volleyball player). The UC Coach has said they made a “competitive offer”. I doubt that. Tech apparently outbid LSU, who I suppose spent their money on the Kiffin Heist.
