Back when I was looking for a flight school the guy at Embry Riddle was laughing as he tried to sell me on the school.

That drove me away. Maybe it was a good thing. I don't do ties.

I did my undergrad @ ERAU.

    - Never flew an ERAU plane (Comp Sci major)
    - yes, it was a sausage fest
    - Daytona Beach is not as cool as it sounds
    - BUT.... I got that UPT slot I went for

We had a former ER plane in our flying club (Riddle 73 for those who were there in the early eighties). At their booth in Oshkosh, I picked up an "I'm an Embry-Riddle graduate" button and stuck it in the headliner.

A big fan of UND in terms of flight schools. Huge fleet, great flight program, and a good variety of students. It does get a bit cold up there though.

I think many here are jealous of ERAU.

Many speak of it yet have never attended.
I’m not saying it’s “all that”, but it’s on par with any other every day university.

And yes, there is a lot of jealousy showing.

I also did my undergrad at ERAU (and half my graduate)

    - Also never flew an ERAU plane (had CFI/MEI before enrolling)
    - pretty much all dudes, in accordance with most aviation related things 15-20 years ago
    - Destin/Ft Watlon Beach FL is as cool as it sounds (extended campus)
    - BUT... I didn't pay them a dime (thank you USAF)

Not quite as cool as getting a UPT/fighter slot. :)

Why only half of your graduate work?

Can anyone, anywhere, name any college that would be as cool as a fighter slot?

And do you think anything might have changed in the past 20 years?

Because I got out of the AF and with life never went back to finish it. Wish I would have but being a controller, it doesn't get you much.

    Not me.

Not a tremendous amount. I do think that there are more females in aviation now than then but I have no data to back that up.

How so? What's to be jealous of?

I could see feeling that way about someone who bought a NXT Nemesis to build hours for their CPL, or who did all their training on tundras or floats in the beautiful PNW, or someone who had Patty Wagstaff as their instructor, just not seeing what makes ERU that impressive? Normal run of the mill CFIs, normal boring trike trainers, I mean based on the price I guess it does show that you have money or really good credit :dunno:

Embry Riddle Worldwide grad: AS Professional Aeronautics 1993 and BS Aeronautics 2016

Never flew a Riddle plane. I had my ATP prior to starting
    Not $150,000 in debt
The academics have been increased as ERAU has transitioned more into an engineering school.
When on campus a couple of times (2015-2016) and there were many females on campus.
I've been to Grand Forks and Daytona is still better. It was only fall when I was there.

That is one thing that is always overlooked by the ER critics. Embry Riddle is a very fine engineering school. And that is coming from a Ga. Tech Grad.
That is certainly true; even more today.

And Le Cordon Bleu is a great cooking school, but I still wouldn't recommend it to an aspiring commerical pilot.

But I wouldn't rule out Embry Riddle either.

What the heck does Le Cordon Bleu have to do with this conversation anyway?

I think that’s a bit of an overstatement, and that’s coming from someone who is also a ramblin’ wreck and a helluva engineer.

I’d say fair. It’s not in the tier of Auburn, Clemson, Purdue, etc., as an engineering school.

Just my humble opinion, and worth what you paid for it.

Well, it's true that I may be a little bit biased, since I live in the area and read the local news about Embry Riddle.
And this is admittedly from an Embry Riddle source, and while it may be puffing, I don't think you can call it a lie:

    http://news.erau.edu/headlines/embr...m-named-top-in-nation-for-16th-straight-year/

That article is from 2015 and Embry Riddle has made advances since then.

I'm not saying they are the best choice a kid can make, but I am saying they are being trashed undeservedly.

Yes, ER has come a long way and I’m glad to see it. I wouldn’t trash the school by any means.

If you look at the latest ranking for engineering schools, not just aero programs, ER is 84th. Respectable, but places like Auburn and Clemson are in the 50s.

GT has been underrated once again, placing only 4th in the rankings.

OTOH, ER is a lot closer to the beach than Tech... :)

My only complaint about ERAU was the price increase per class while I was attending their satellite campuses. From 675 a class to 1025 (9 week courses 3 at a time). Their overheads were pretty small and didn't change much at all - some admin staff in the same rented out part of an office building plus an instructor.

I think that they take a lot of people who aren't aligned for success in their program. Potentially because they are more interested in the money than the success of their graduates.
