Skydog’s advice to new pilots, new aircraft owners, and other aviation novices:
Find a mentor at your local airport who has a great depth of knowledge and who also knows others who knows what he does not. Also make friends with someone at the FSDO. In spite of the jokes, they really are there to help. Some guy on the internet, even an aviation site such as POA, is seldom your best bet for good information. You will learn that on POA and other online sites that you will get widely different answers and that most will be wrong or at best incomplete. There are many folks online with less or not much more knowledge than you who love to put out their silly notions as fact. Heck, even some of the elderly and supposedly experienced online folks give very bad advice. There are a few exceptions on here of course, but as a novice it is unlikely you will be able to distinguish them. Also join at least one general aviation advocacy group such as EAA, AOPA, etc. They really do great work regardless of what the babbling naysayers might say. If buying a plane, join the relevant type club. And finally, RTFM. It was written for a reason.
