What did you do today?

I did a mid-life refresh on my colocated server. The CPUs and storage were fine, but it was wanting for a little more RAM.

Now I can code in all of the terrible languages in that other thread and be able to suffer the overhead and funkiness inherent with them :D

Yesterday, I installed new cpu, gpu and updated from Windows 10 to 11. I'm proud of myself. This the first time I've ever worked on my own pc, which is one of the only things I've paid other people to work on for me in my adult life. I've always claimed I can fix anything but a broken heart and the crack of dawn, but that was a lie because opening up computers used to scare me. It still does, kinda.

Installed lawn edge borders on a bed in front of our home, raked out all the old mulch, and spread 20-some bags of mulch. More to come today. Plus buying as much mulch as I can fit in our SUV - five bags for ten bucks at Homeless Despot through today.

Removed 20 metal expansion anchors from a wall in the basement. Why would anyone put expansion anchors on fake wood paneling?

With those out of the way, I can put up a bit of plywood and then organizer drawers for all the little stuff that I lose...that'll I'll probably still lose anyway.

Arent you married? Who you trying to impress? Aint no way im even attempting to wear more than the bare minimum.
Yes, and this is the reason I got married, to be babied... I mean yes, and I love my wife.!!

sweat pants and T shirt, no buttons or zipper. This means I don't require assistance for trips to the bathroom

Preflighted the Scout and pulled her from the hangar. Made a few short flights to 3000 AGL and a couple even shorter ones to 1000. Then I cleaned her up and put her away.

The IRS calls it working . . . I'd call it free flight time and they pay for my lunch and car's gas. But . . . I'm not complaining.

Took @mrsjimk to Pella to see the tulips. We were a little late; they were about done. Should've gone a week ago. And our favorite restaurant was closed (permanently :(). Still had a good time. Brought some Dutch Letters to the CMI Tracon.

Removed and replaced 140 feet of railing and cored 30 some holes. Now waiting for the power company to show up cuz replacing a transformer didn't help my power issues. Been a long day

I remember going there when I was about six years old. We went in the last week of April for my mom's birthday. We were camping and it snowed. Twice. Also, the tulips were really blooming, which I remember because when my mom tipped the stroller with my 1 year old younger brother in it closer to the tulips so he could smell them, we discovered he had learned how to undo the buckles by himself...as he almost fell into the tulips.

I'm sensing a very Dutch theme. When you say "Dutch Letters" do you mean the big solid chocolate ones? Do they have other Dutch products there? And I'm assuming that's Pella, IA?

Most forget the purge. Use #12 cup? Guys give me crap for using a trash can of a cup, but there's a reason I don't have to clean my welds.

Nah, I don't have the big pyrex Furick cup. I got the ****ty chinese gas lens and I think #8 or #9 is the largest pink ceramic cup I have (after cracking the bigger ones and not bothering to replace them.)

Yes, Pella IA. Just SE of Des Moines. Yes, very Dutch themed. "Tulip time" festival was this past weekend. They're most famous for the Jaarsma Bakery, source of the Dutch letters, which are a pastry filled with almond paste, formed into the shape of an "S" to honor the Dutch royal family (or something like that).

Vermeer and Pella Windows are both based here and support the airport (KPEA) and tourist activities. Vermeer had a full sized windmill built in Holland and erected in the middle of town at the museum. It's a great town. Lots of good food and little shops, very walkable. Fbo has 3 crew vans and are very friendly. They have a town band that plays in the summer. I have a thread in the "fun places to fly" forum.

Our favorite restaurant was called "the Dutch fix". They sold it and supposedly the new owners are going to keep it largely the same, but it was closed yesterday so we couldn't verify. New name is "clover leaf on franklin". They appear to have done away with my favorite thing in pella though, the "Stroopwafel Sundae" :(

I've never understood the love for furick cups. When I was done with the advanced tig courses at Lincoln Electric. They gave you a tackle box of gas lenses and cups. Included both air and water cooled. Still using those 15 years later. The giant gas lens is a bit unwieldy and takes getting used to. But I love it for stainless.

Nice enough product and strong social media presence. I can see how his products would appeal to the guys who believe they can buy their way into a skillset: "If I mount the hugest cup on the latest superflex torch and power it with the most expensive machine with the most knobs and brightest screens, I'll stack rainbow dimes!" It's not sexy to sit in the shop for hours and push a puddle along a steel coupon with an old transformer machine and a collet body.

Dragged all my stuff back from the hangar last night. Going to unload everything and weld out the exhaust in the shop today. It's absurd to move all this junk in the name of fitting up a few feet of thin-walled tubing.

+100 on doing the back purge. Even though it's the only right thing to do, not everybody does it. I weld worse than Elmer Fudd talks, but can appreciate that you can't buy skill...shooter friend of mine used to say "you can't buy an X".

I still use a collet body and use an old synwave transformer machine with a water cooled torch. Wat Only bust out the gas lens for stainless. Just bout a new tig that I havent fired up yet. I just dont get why one would feel compelled to buy glass cups instead of ceramic. What are you actually gaining? If youre looking at the tungsten inside the cup, its gonna look like crap. I have a great disdain for marketing when the product is no different than other brands.

I refuse to buy Tito's just because they advertise as Gluten free. Pretty sure the distillation process removed any gluten even if you were distilling from wheat.

Having the Vietnam war ending 50 years ago on April 30th, and today being VE Day 80 years ago, I paid homage to my uncle who lost his life in France, and a cousin the same at Qui Nhon in Vietnam with a donation to Red Cross and the Gary Sinise foundation in their names

Sorry to be a downer... and to those here that served, thank you.

I am a bit slow on what I did today as this is what I did yesterday.

I worked for 4 hours in the morning then pulled the Scout out of the hanger and parked it for our tow pilot. Pulled the glider out of the hanger & trailer and assembled. Got towed to 2000 by the Scout, Flew 4 hours, 175+ miles and climbed to about 12,000 feet. Landed, derigged, put the glider in the trailer/hanger. Put Scout away. Did an hour Private pilot check ride prep lesson, mostly soft field TOL's. for about an hour in the 172.

Fixed a 25 year old GE washing machine that sounded like a jet engine in the spin cycle. Replaced a bearing in an NLA part after watching multiple videos in Spanish because Mexican people never throw anything away. Sounds better than new.

My cousin is currently caretaker of "the diesel refrigerator" (the nickname coming from the sounds it makes as the compressor starts) a 1950-something Kelvinator that has outlived it's first six or seven owners and countless would be replacements.

Rendered an opinion that conducting bacteriological water system sampling immediately after disinfection neither causes regulatory issues with DDW nor warranty issues with the GAC system media supplier. It was an easy day to play engineer.

I also discovered why my Facebook ad was non-performing. It was a hard day to play author-promoter.

A few months ago, my LG front loader was having a tough time balancing the load. Got so bad that the drum would bang the sides as it tried to spin up. I thought the shocks were blown so I ordered a new set. When I opened it up, I discovered that the front counterweight fell off. Put it back on (it's held on by friction via a variation on conical expansion anchors) and now it works good as new.

Expected that to be the problem on my Samsung. Turns out the problem was just "Samsung"

Swam laps for 30 minutes at the Y. Then went to work. No, not a J-O-B! I don't do that anymore.

This is a work of art!

Trying to learn something new this morning, I made a couple of small day trades. I made 98-cents on one and 88-cents on the other. I am starting very small with only 10 shares of each. Had I gone with 100 shares I might have made enough to buy lunch.

Easily the nicest day this week. (Of course it could not be Saturday or Sunday.) Dew point at about 2400 ft above the field. Nice, flat bottom, puffy, white, cumulus clouds reaching high into the atmosphere. Lots of trips to 3000, limited only by the number of gliders on hand.

Cut grass. Forklifted objects. Lathed stock. Skid loaded. Welded.

Wheels up at 7 AM tomorrow, off to the Young Eagles rally.

Edit: Made it without dying of CO poisoning. Great day.

I argued with the tall blonde lady at the gym that good red wine contained minimal amounts of sugar. She was so upset I was right that she started another argument about how unsafe tap water is to drink.

Baby, don't go there.

I think I learned today that at least one pilot on here likes angry birds.
