Thinking ahead - Panel Upgrades

The GTR205/GTR205x also has 4-place audio panel/intercom capability. Something to think about.
Thanks, good consideration. I don't want a remote Audio panel though. Too high stakes trying to fight through the menus to change something and I've got a ton of space in the stack. It would probably save a few bucks. On audio panel, I'd go PS unless the rest of it is all Garmin and
Yep, let someone else take the hit on avionics cost.
I appreciate this thought, but I think it wouldn't make sense. I have an upgraded engine with 100 hours on it, a prop I just overhauled ($65k new), and sliding seat STC (about 8k all in) By the time you buy (115k), get that one upgraded (engine, prop, sliding seats (80K) to "save on avionics" of 30-50 doesn't quite seem like a win.

I think I just have to decide between a minimal (add G5s, fix issues in radio, and add a better xponder) or go a little bigger with GPS/NAV/Comm + Xponder + PFD/MFD.

It's a different approach, for sure.

The PAR200b is an audio panel with a remote COM radio (you mount 2 boxes and wire between them).
The GTR205 (and GTR205x) is a COM radio with an integrated audio panel (1 box does it all).

The GTR205 is a little more full featured, though. It has a color screen as well as the ability to interface with your GPS and/or GI275 for forward/reverse frequency lookup. It's also a little more expensive. Not enough to be significant in my opinion, but I know some folks here are really into counting every single last bean. :)

OK I might have messed something up looking this all up at 2 AM, but isn't the GTR205 *cheaper* than the PAR200B? It looks like there might need to be a software enablement purchased for the intercom to be 4 place, and maybe another one to hook up the other com radio, but I couldn't find any information about what that costs on their site.

I did note that somehow I got the experimental number ($2,345) when I was looking up prices last night. Should have been $2895.

Only one example.
It's newer than yours.

I went through the new avionics route once, my plane was down for about a year. It seriously messed up my instrument training. I hope your avionics upgrade goes smoother than mine.

I was really attached to the idea it had been my forever plane, HOW WRONG I WAS.

I had a few thoughts looking at that example:

1. Keeping the round-dial look is definitely the way to go in that plane. I'd throw any thoughts of marring that panel with G5s right out the window.
2. "Avionics by Beechcraft". Made me laugh. Maybe the one at the bottom!
3. Who doesn't take a minute to clean off the glass before taking photos? It looks like someone used their foot at one point on that GTN 650!

Lovely plane, though!

Regarding the "forever plane", I'm curious on how you went through the process (stages of grief?) in deciding that it wasn't your forever plane after all. More than once I've asked myself why I'm putting so much money into a Cherokee 180 instead of the taildragger I really want, but then I read about guys not being able to get insurance on retracts and now I can fly my Cherokee on a driver's license for the rest of my life, so perhaps it was a good call.

Thanks but honestly this plane has a 1400 hour engine, is crowding a quarter million bucks and STILL doesn’t have a pfd. What would the point of this plane for me?

You get to decide, that is the beauty of it.
It was only an example.
I thought I saw two of the following, sure seems to be PFD like...

Yes, it does appear to have dual GI275s, similar to the "classic look" panel option I suggested. Nice looking plane, but it once again reminds me of how overpriced Bonanzas always seem to be relative to the rest of the market. Go with a comparable airplane from a different manufacturer and you could get a much newer plane with an even nicer panel for not much more money.

Well, I guess that the "thinking about" cycles are faster now that I have a plane. LOL

I'm down to two choices after picking up a used GTN650 and GTX345 (these would be in both scenarios below)

Option 1:
PMA450C
GNC215
2 used G5's $3,500 for the parts to include GAD29B, etc)
Total installed (including installing the GTN650 and GTX345) $24k to $30k (on top of what I paid for the GTN and GTX345)

Option 2:
10" Dynon HDX with engine monitors
PMA450C
GNC215
Total installed (including installing GTN650 and GTX345) $32K to $38K including engine monitoring so I could retire my antique system

Basically:
$8k difference between the dual G5 vs the Dynon 10" big screen out the door, BUT it gives me a modern engine monitor.

Thoughts?

I'd do Garmin G3x and keep the same ecosystem

My fear is that’ll be another 10k as I’ll be forced to a dealer. Any further thoughts on above options?

It might have been discussed already and/or you might know but a key component of any of this is talking to the shop that would do the work, someone you choose to trust. Their options and capabilities might well dictate your choices.

My brief search suggests the G3x and Dynon are similar in price and function.

It must really suck being stuck in the certified world!

You’re right on, I’m working with a shop I like that is non garmin, but they’ve done lots of dynon and “over the counter” garmin, but never a g3x. Not sure I want to pay them to learn, but I’m unsure

One other factor, I could get another GPS/Comm instead of the GNC215. For a couple AMU more, I could get another used GTN650 or a GNC 355, it seems like I'd use a back up GPS more than a backup VOR.

S-TEC 50 is a good autopilot. It's no Garmin, but if it's there and working, no need to swap it out. And yes, it requires the turn coordinator. The GFC-500 is really nice if you have the budget for it, though.
GNC300XL - If you want to fly IFR in today's world, this won't cut it. The GNC 355 is a modern replacement GPS/Com that gives you a MUCH nicer screen and more importantly, WAAS and LPV approach capability. What indicator do you have connected to it right now? (Pic would help, model number would be even better)
I don't know that I'd keep the old Nav/Com. Avionics upgrades done piecemeal can get expensive, so keeping an old unsupported unit can be penny wise and pound foolish. I'd throw a GNC 255 Nav/Com in there and call it a day.
PMA450 is a very nice audio panel, and I'd do that now - It sounds like you're already having issues, and it's better to spend your money on upgrades than it is to chase down issues like that. FWIW, our flying club spent $3,000 once on a similar issue caused by wiring going bad, it would have been far better to just tear it out and replace it.

Indicator-wise, of course, you'll need something to replace the Terra indicator... And I'd go with dual GI275s. Yes, it's way overkill as an "indicator". But, with an old airplane, IMO it's probably worth it if you can swing it solely because the GI275s are fully certified replacements for all of your existing flight instruments. (G5s are not.) That gives you the ability to at least get home and make repairs on your own time instead of being stuck somewhere out on a trip. This also takes care of dumping the vacuum system except in rare cases (like Mooneys that have vacuum-driven entry steps or speed brakes, for example).

And it's worth trying to do everything at once if you can. Avionics installations are expensive, and in the long run it'll be cheaper and easier to pull the interior out once, pull the panel and associated wiring apart once, and wire up a new harness once.

Now wait a minute. This is the plane you bought after asking us for "a cheap way to build retract time" wasn't it?

Let me throw a couple of suggestions out there. If you still want that Twin Bonanza sometime in the next decade, you probably don't want to be dropping big money on a panel right now. OTOH, if you've decided the Bo is gonna stay, then you probably wan't something nice.

First off: I wouldn't bother with an IFD navigator. Their main advantage is that they're slide-in replacements for the Garmin GNS series. You won't be able to get that advantage, so IMO you're better off sticking with Garmin. You mention not liking the flow in "the GNX and G1000" - I'm going to assume you meant GNS and G1000, as they're pretty much identical in how they work. Good news: You can't get a G1000 in your plane, and nobody in their right mind would be recommending GNS series navigators now, they were discontinued 14 years ago! The Garmin GTN and all of their modern stuff works in a completely different way - Just a main menu with icons instead of the GNS/G1000 groups and pages.

For the "go all out" version, I'd do this:

* G3X Touch 10" with EIS - Putting in a 7" on the other side would be optional, more on that in a moment.
* GTN: You could get a 750Xi and use it kind of like an MFD, or you could get a 650Xi and the 7" MFD. Or a 750Xi and the 7" MFD if you really like lots of big color screens and hate money like I do. ;)
* GFC 500 autopilot with pitch trim and yaw damper. Your pax will thank you for the yaw damper - Beeches are happy airplanes, they love to wag their tails!
* GTX345 transponder. If you really want a backup GPS, you could do the GNX375, or you could get a GNC355 as your second Com radio.
* GTR205 #2 com radio
* GMA350c audio panel if you want to talk to the plane, or PS Engineering PMA450B otherwise.

Now, to accomplish all of your goals while also at least attempting to not have the panel be worth more than the rest of the plane and maintaining the classic look:

* GI 275 AI: This gives you primary instrument capability for your entire six-pack. I'd still keep 4/6 but if you have one of them go bad this will keep you from being grounded.
* GI 275 HSI: Gets rid of the wonky DG and gives you a lot of capability, also functions as the backup for the AI. With two of them like this, you can ditch the vacuum system and get some useful load back.
* GNX 375: This would replace the 300XL *and* get you reliable ADS-B
* GNC 215 Nav/Com 1
* PS Engineering PAR 200B audio panel/Com2
* EI CGR-30P engine monitor - This will allow you to use the existing wiring and probes that you have for EGT/CHT most likely. I didn't see mention of what model your current one is or a picture, just that it's an EI, so check on this to be sure.
* Keep the S-TEC

You can - It can be on the side of the PFD.

I'm down to two choices after picking up a used GTN650 and GTX345 (these would be in both scenarios below)

I'd still go with GI275s - I'd hate for you to carve up that classic panel and put a bunch of bulky square stuff on it! And as I noted before, with an older airplane that may be more prone to things failing, they give you a way to get home legally as they're certified as primary for all of the six-pack functions. If you have 275s and your old analog airspeed indicator dies, placard it inop and fly home (or to the shop) and have it fixed/removed. If you have G5s and your analog airspeed dies, you're grounded until it's fixed.

I think you'd save a fair bit of money by doing the EI engine monitor (CGR-30P) and reusing the existing wiring.

I think you're going to be in good shape with the GTN650/GTX345/PMA450C/GNC215. Completely new center stack!

It’s a thought to stay with tiny screens and maybe stub out for a gtn750 so I can see what’s going on. Probable 11k used vs 5k for a 215

I need at least one big moving map

MILF flyer,
what is your plane worth now as it is?

hmm,
i'd go 2 x g5 or 2xgi275, doesn't really matter 275s are more capable

gtn 650 gps,comm,nav -- if you want nav, gnc355a if you don't

gnc 300xl -- keep, really nice working comm, integrates with all the other equip AND is cheap to replace, if it takes a ****, you can find 5 for 1500 bucks a pop, garmin still repaired these last time i checked. Also it's IFR rated, just not WAAS. I would keep

audio panel -- i replaced mine, it's nice but it's really expensive to do and it still sounds like airplane audio. shrug do it anyway pma 8000/450, garmin etc... pma or garmin doesn't really matter they work and sound good

adsb/transponder is the hard part, basically it comes down to stratus or gnx375. You can get a less expensive garmin transpoder but the install cost will be the same while not saving all that much for the equip. basicall yif you do all of this at the same time you're already broke so why not.

good thing about the gnc355,175,375, they have built in Bluetooth, which can enable amongst other things flight plan transfers to and from tablets/phone, etc... it's super slick selecting approaches on the panel and have it automatically update your tablet.

I personally went with 2xg5, gnc355a, pma8000g audio panel, preexisting stratus tansponder.
i mostly went with the g5's as i plan to eventually upgrade to a g3x system which is basically an upgrade to the g5s( not exactly but it uses all the components )

You can use an EFB for moving map purposes and pretty much have as large a screen as you want (within reason and cockpit size). That's my SOP even with a solo GTN 750.
I want to learn more about how to do this and get the SV and moving map on the ipad. I use Garmin Pilot, but could consider floreflight. I need to connect to an ADAHRS I think to get this, and I can get that from my to be installed GTX345

You make a very interesting point. I don't mind the GNC300, though if i kept it, I have to buy the update stuff and I think a seperate subscription (I don't think it's included in onepak), so I'm tempted to replace it while everything is being done.

I COULD get a GNC 355 instead of another GTN and that would give me another comm and backup GPS, while also giving me crossfill and flightplan updates FROM tablet to GNC355 to GTN650 without buying the FS510 (I think). If so, this is effectively a $2,000 discount on the GNC355 as it would allow me to connect to the stack without buying the FS510.

Realistically though, I think it's more interesting to put a GTN750 (about 11k now used) or at least have it stubbed out and run that plus the GTN650. If I did that it could look like

PMA450 audio panel
GTN750 (slot open, but prewired tray)
GTN650 nav/gps/comm on day one
GTX345 xponder

Then for the non stack

Two GI275s $10k or Two G5s $3,500

Then
Figure out how to really use my IPAD for "highway in the sky", which might be possible with a connection to the GTX345 to get ADAHARS?

Your cost comparison of two GI275s vs two G5s is way off BTW.

when IR, i follow the lines on the g5 and look at my tablets for the larger picture, only really look at the 355 to change radio frequencies, meaning you can get by with a smaller screen if you dont' want to spend the cash. 650 and 750 sound really nice but one of them will def end up as a mostly unused expensive comm radio.

Also the NAV functions don't really get used, except for practice and the occasional ILS, really just to maintain practice.
you'll get it when you start training for the IR,

i'd swap your 345 for a 375 to get all the transfer goodness, it really is that good. I don't know if i said it but it doesn't transfer Databases, you'll still have to swap sd cards unless you buy the fs510. my opinion, not worth it. oh yeah, it'd give you a backup gps.

truthfully i never worried about a backup gps, at anytime in my plane i have at-least 3 sources of gps data, 355, tablet, backup tablet, phone and oh yeah a garmin aviation watch(thing actually works), it gets the flight plan also.

Nothing as sophisticated as an ADAHRS is needed for the moving map. Just a GPS source. Might be internal, might be a $100 external puck. Might be a connection to your panel equipment. SV is a different issue and requires more. Same for in-flight weather and traffic. But “where am I?” is about as basic an EFB function as there is.

You say you have Garmin Pilot. Doesn’t it display your position on the map? “How to do it” is “open the app.“

I meant the sv stuff with pilots view indicators for where you’re going. Example, new city, vfr, where the hell is the airport actually at while looking at miles of roads and warehouses that look a lot like airports, but aren’t. I use the moving map, weather, airspace’s, frequencies on GO every flight.

You use SV and to me that means you want synthetic vision capability. Below is an example of SV on a panel mounted device.

Garmin and maybe others, also offer a variation of highway in the sky that can be overlayed. The HITS boxes are the magenta rectangles below and to my knowledge synthetic vision is not required for HITS to dsiplay, but can be implemented in some displays if so requited. That’s can be a lot of clutter though.

60db384db476fcfb5821c9accd5f2f1b.jpg

Is either of the above the capability you’re desiring?

TCABM and Midlifeflyer thank you. That is my goal. I don't think you get the magenta boxes around your path on Garmin Pilot app for Ipad the same way that it's shown in TCABMs second picture above, nor do you get the cartoon runway shown in his first picture (to the best of my knowledge). I beleive you can get these in G3X touch (and Dynon has something along these lines that I need to confirm). I don't know if you get those views shown in a GTN 750 presentation. If so, then moving up to that would reduce my need for a big screen to the left, and I could go with the two little screens (G5 or GI275) to dump the vacuum system.

OK, the Dynon does something similar to the G3X

Given that and I can’t speak to Pilot, but iFly EFB will show the magenta boxes in its 3D EFIS view if you configure it to do so. It’s hars to see on my iPhone view, but the white box is the next box to fly thru, in this case, it’s juat after the top of descent point, so it’s slightly below the horizon line. There are magenta boxes after that one, but again may be hard to see in this image. I can get a tablet based image later.

Having said all that, the decision on what and how you want to use your panel and EFB are up to you; both Garmin and Dynon implement what it seems you’re looking for in panel mounts and it appears the major EFB players may do so as well.

If you decide to go down the panel mount path, keep in mind your ongoing costs for database subscriptions and whether the synthetic vision capability also has a premium/subscription charge on a recurring basis.

We just added a 182 with GI275s and a GTN; since each device can accept a database, the OnePaK from Garmin is $899/yr compared to our 172 that has dual G5s and a GTN which uses the standard North America database for $499 annually.

Thanks to you all for really understanding what I was trying to get at. IFR is secondary (not even rated yet), but getting good communications and situational awareness were my big goals, while setting it up for IFR in the future (both training and flying it)
