Oshkosh 2026

Hello, old POA friends! Long time since I have been around, but.. I'm flying in to OSH Monday morning. Leaving DC area Sunday, overnighting at Dodge (UNU) then flying the arrival Monday early. The blue and white Arrow will be rocking wings and hitting a dot soon... hopefully parking S40. Safe travels to all who are flying in. Don't inhale the smoke.. I hear it's maple-syrup flavored.

I'm watching the ADS-B circus. Looked like there was about 20 aircraft all hit Fisk on top of each other at the same time and got turned. Then a 150 was almost to the airport and whipped a u-turn back towards Fisk nearing going head on into a Mooney. I feel confident I could fly the arrival and land successfully, its the other guys that have me worried.

Been watching too. Our own @kyleb was in that group. He’s on his second try approaching Fisk now.

Oh no! He was just sent back again!
I guess that's why they note to carry extra fuel. I'm planning on getting there with enough to do an extra 1 hour of hold flying which will leave me with 1 hour of reserve to go somewhere and get more gas.

Looks like they aren't putting people in a hold, just sending a few back to Endeavor.

I came up on Tuesday. I had a hell of a tailwind and made it in 4 hours even (best time previously was 4:45). The only problem was some clueless controller decided to sequence me out over the lake 5 miles in trail behind a lake on a tight base (even though we have the same approach/stall speeds). He's not going to be up to the "land it on the green dot" level of sophistication.

I'm hearing reports of a crash at Mineral Point, WI airport this afternoon. Sounds like pilot survived.

Yeah, people were passing and cutting in line, ruined the spacing we’d established and we got sent around twice for good behavior. Landed to get fuel and a break.
We are watching….. :ihih:

Did he make it in on his third try. Some guy in a M20P complained about being turned back for a third time.
Nope. On the ground at Wisconsin dells -sw of the arrival path.

Say hello to the Ho-chuck hotel. That’s where our Grumman annual convention is this year in Sept.

We got in yesterday afternoon around 13:45 CDT IFR. Row 344 in HBP. A couple of hours out the field went VFR but we stayed IFR. I hate the VFR arrival with a passion for all of the issues mentioned above and as a result we’ve flown in IFR the past 8 years as it’s simpler and safer. This was our 12th year flying in altogether and it maybe our last as the allure of flying in has lost a lot of its luster.

Anyway, the west wind has really done a good job blowing the smoke out. On the ground it’s not noticeable at all, except for maybe a slight haze.

Christ, we already have a contender for the dumbest pilot award. Yesterday Luscombe N1373B landed 09 without talking to anyone against traffic landing 27. How does this happen? I thought Cessna N4301R from last year was bad, but I think somehow this worst.the incident was captured on LiveATC on the 9/27 tower feed starting at about the 1919:30Z mark.

Flew in Thursday IFR from Maryland in a C172. Two stops, KZZV and KOXI. Flew out of KOXI on the Southeast IFR route south then west of Chicago. The south route was just north of a cold front, so we (and others flying the same route) kept having to deviate right because of buildups and storms.

Then once turned north, had to deviate right for big storms over Rockford and Beloit. It was perfectly fine over Chicago but that is the forbidden zone. Controllers kept mentioning how busy they were because of Oshkosh traffic.

Smoke top was 8000 feet. And after Beloit, it was very smooth to the KOSH RNAV 09 approach. It was like flying in a milk bottle and totally IMC but the smoothest IMC I’ve ever flown. Saw the runway at 2.5 out. N40 row 507.

As long as nobody was hurt, I love these stories.

That was about 20 minutes before my landing. Crazy.

Dang. Looking at the flight history, dude left the San Francisco area on Tuesday, headed towards Oshkosh. Four days flying cross country in a old Luscombe, which is pretty impressive. Only to massively screw it up in the end.

I’ve now had the opportunity to drive all the aircraft camping areas and it’s starting to fill up but there’s still tons of space available.

Ugh! Worst I've personally encountered, years ago, was the exact same trick, pulled by - wait for it - a Luscombe. Nobody got the tail number, it was pre-ADS-B and once he saw everyone running towards him he decided to take back off into the oncoming traffic. Face. Palm.

Good to know. Plan is still to launch tomorrow from Northern VA, stop at KAXV in Ohio, fuel, eat then head to KUNU Dodge County. We'll stay there until Monday morning, then push the arrival after sleeping. Just hoping the viz isn't too terrible tomorrow due to the smoke. :( I'm sure we'll end up in the deep south of the S40 but by then who cares... we'll be at the show.
