Apple seems to have mostly done no harm, which is a pretty good endorsement these days.
    • I did find a bug in Messages where it will auto-suggest previous group MMS recipient lists with no way to clear them that I've found. Still not fixed in 13.1.

From what I'm reading, there are some significant bugs and security issues. Granted, Forbes seems to rip Apple every chance they get, but what they mentioned makes me want to wait a few weeks for the first update.

13.1 comes out on Sept. 24th. I guess we'll see if that addresses some 13.0 issues or just adds a few new issues.

Forbes isn't why I am going to wait for 13.x (where x >0). It is all the rest of my lifetime experiences.

I’m waiting. There hasn’t been a single new iOS update in many years that had me looking forward to it. I am so disappointed in the hardstop on all innovation at that company.

Macht nichts to me. I have an iPhone 6 (not 6S), which isn't even supported by iOS 13.

Downloaded it this morning. I like it so far. I’ve had my iPhone 7 for 3 years so I’ll probably trade it in and get the 11. Not sold on the 11 pro.

I decided to just put a new battery in my 6s and hang onto it for another year. This is the longest I've had a phone and not had the updates slow it down to the point it's miserable to use. Some of the new features looked neat but not neat enough just yet, will probably get the next one.

I wouldn't say at all that I was looking forward to this one, because I really didn't even know what was in it. I've had too much other stuff going on in my life to pay attention to Apple news.

However, I decided to install 13 today for the heck of it, and I have to say, I'm pretty impressed. My first impression is that it's the first iOS update in a long time where they seem to have re-thought some of the things that have worked the same way forever. Lots of improvements to the built-in apps. From what I hear, both speed and battery life are improved across all devices as well.

Mine looks the same (X). What did they change?

I used to be an every-two-years upgrader. But, while the new camera array is cool, I'm still very happy with my X and I think I'm going to hang on to it for another year. I got a Smart Battery Case for it several months ago so I get plenty of battery life. And the new phones don't have as many new features each year as they used to. The smartphone market has really matured, and average users especially really don't need to follow the old every-two-years pattern.

The market isn't dead, though. There's some neat stuff being enabled by the faster hardware, and once developers start taking advantage of it I expect there will be some really next-level neat stuff coming out in software. There's still a fair amount of movement in the camera part of smartphones too. The latest iPhones are actually doing a bunch of automatic AI pre- and post-processing so that when you finally push the button, a bunch of data has been collected before and after that can automatically enhance the quality of the picture. That's kinda hard to put on a bullet point in a brochure or on a web site, though.

I’m guessing there are a lot of people waiting for 5G capability and will hold onto phones and not incrementally upgrade.
    I’m in that camp myself.

My iPhone is a 6+, so won't happen.

My iPad should get it. I'm going to try and avoid it tho, until 10/1.

No go in my iPad Pro. No biggie.

FWIW, Garmin Pilot has one of the Foreflightish "wait til we test it" messages. I didn't wait. It works fine as far as I can tell.

Strictly speaking, it won't get iOS. It will instead get iPadOS.

My 5s doesn't qualify. Its getting so slow with so many things (not battery life, just old age) I'm thinking on a new phone. We shall see. I can still use the 5s just fine, but it does a lot of things slowly. My thought is the price of the phone is about half the cost of having one (the service is expensive) so if I'm going to pay to feed it I might as well have a nice one.

A wise man said "fool me once, shame on you, fool me 13.0 times shame on me" :)

FWIW I know some people who used the beta version and generally the comments were good. I have not seen anything I can share publicly about iOS13.0, good or bad so please do noot ask me.

Apple TV showed up along with iPadOS on an iPad that's not logged into an iCloud account. Nice that I can watch unencumbered.

I had my 6 for almost 5 years, and with it not supporting iOS 13 I thought it would be a good time to upgrade. I was going to wait until next year, but I see no need/desire for 5G for the first few years and there are some things that made it worth while: battery life, extra bands for T-mobile, screen size/resolution, performance, CarPlay improvements

I got an 11 Pro and it is a great upgrade for me. Battery life is fantastic, performance is back to everything just happens rather than waiting for things to load and scroll. I was considering an 11 but I didn't want a much larger phone so I spent the extra cash and got the Pro. Based on how often I upgrade, it amortizes out to not much extra. For reference, before my 6 my prior phone was a 4s.

Since my 6s went swimming and drowned a few weeks ago, I decided to get an 11 Pro. It's a huge improvement, especially the camera and battery, although I probably would have stuck with the 6S if it had not met its demise. The 11 Pro is noticeably heavier than the 6S, even though it does not appear to be much bigger physically. I'm still on a learning curve, mostly because it has no "home" button or fingerprint ID. I thought I wouldn't like Face ID, but it works pretty well. The one problem I have been having is with my car bluetooth. It will pair with the car, but it won't auto connect the next time. I don't need to pair it again but I have to connect again manually. The car bluetooth has been flaky before, but at least it would auto connect with my 6S. My car is a 2012 Subaru Forester. I have been using USB as a workaround, but it would be nice to have bluetooth working again.

Seen a couple of weird things in iPadOS 13.1 on my Mini 4. A couple of non-aviation apps being strange, and I'm finding the latest tweak to select while typing a bit annoying. Nothing major but I'm not flying without my Android backup just in case.

Are there any good performance benchmark tests between the iOSs on the same phone?

I normally don’t “upgrade” due to apples history of slowing devices down trying to get you to buy another $1,000.00 phone.

Frankly with how powerful my X is I don’t get it, outside of bloat ware, why I’d ever need a faster phone to have a blazing fast experience outside of something like using to to crack complex passwords or mine coins or something

My 8 just got the ios13.x.x upgrade this weekend and now I have a question.

There's a new function called "Shortcuts". It seems to have scripting abilities, but there's one thing I'd like to do: open an app automatically when I cancel an alarm.

I started using my phone as an alarm clock. I punch the snooze button once, then after 9 minutes I cancel it. The next thing I do is open the Weather channel to see the current temp. I'm trying to figure a way to use the shortcuts as a way to do that. Yeah, I know this is a first world problem, but still... Is there a way to add an app call to the alarm cancel?

    edit:

I think I figured it out:

    Shortcuts >
    Automation >
    Create Personal Automation >
    Events >
    Alarm >
    Is Stopped >
    Wake-up >
    Add Action >
    Apps >
    Weather >
Get Current Weather at Current Location

pretty cool - I'll find out tomorrow if it works.

Speaking of IOS 13, my Ipad mini 5 has been working just fine in my Zagg bluetooth keyboard case. Suddenly, it has started losing bluetooth connectivity to the keyboard every few hours. I called Zagg and guess what? They want me to update IOS. Why would it suddenly stop working just because a new IOS came out? I would understand it more if I did update, and THEN it stopped working correctly. In that case, I would wait for another update and apply that too.

Is she showing her face, or her... ? ;)

    https://zillowtech.com/iphone-face-id-not-working.html

If that doesn't work... Settings -> Face ID & Passcode -> Reset Face ID (or "Set Up an Alternate Appearance" might work too). And just for the heck of it, try turning off "Require Attention".

I finally figured this out by going to the Subaru site and downloading specific instructions on Bluetooth pairing with the audio system installed in the car. Not only did I need to pair the Bluetooth, I also needed to pair the hands free phone feature in the car. I don't remember going through all these steps before, but who knows. Now the phone manages to autoconnect to the Bluetooth again.

    That didn't work.

    2 things:

    1) turn off the switch that says: "Ask Before Running". If this is ON, when you cancel the alarm you'll get a prompt that asks you if you want to run the automation. That prompt disappears after a few seconds if you don't click on it quickly enough. Not something I'm able to do when I wake up.

    2) Change "Get Current Weather at Current Location" to "Show weather in my current location".

I also changed from "Wake-up" alarm to "Any" alarm so I could test it.

Now, when the alarm signals and I turn it off, it will start the Weather Channel app and display the current weather. BUT, because the phone is locked when all this happens, it asks for my fingerprint or PIN before it will start the Wx app. Next step is to figure a work around for this.
