In-N-Out

Love the burgers, but not a fan of In-N-Out's fries. Let's be honest here - McDonalds fries are just impossible to beat.

I like the fries but they do need to be eaten right then and there fresh outta the fryer. In-N Out is not a to go meal for later.

I like McD's fries but I actually prefer fresh cut fries like Five Guys or similar.

Five Guys fries are way better than In and Out's, both cut fresh on site and fried to order.

I've never cared for In and Out's burgers, either. They are ok, but nothing fantastic that merits their cult-following.

I do like their business model, though. Pay the staff well, staff it with tons of people who are friends, and everyone has fun.

The 600 mile radius from distribution really isn't necessary with today's transportation, though. It likely has more to do with support and finances than the actual shipping of fresh burger meat. There are plenty of places that get fresh, not frozen burgers all the time. And if they don't want to build more distribution centers, sub that part out while still making your own patties in company-owned centers. There's ways around it, it really has to be more about the slow-growth model and finances.

I think that's key. You can compare Inn & Out with other burger chains, but you can't compare burger chains with non-chain restaurants that make a great burger.

The quality of Inn & Out's fries (or anybody else's fries, for that matter) is immaterial to me as I don't eat fries. I will say this though - I can be a sucker for onion rings, and Habit Burger makes onion rings that are on par with non-chain restaurants that do great onion rings. The sad thing is onion rings are probably worse for you than fries.
 
About once a month I hit In-N-Out for lunch. I'm at the NW corner of LAX, they're just down the street at the NE corner. Always packed. They actually opened another one down Sepulveda in El Segundo.
 
A new Popeye's chicken opened up down the road from work. I've never really had Popeye's except for a couple of leftover pieces of chicken sitting in the fridge, but I thought they were pretty good. They have fish and shrimp though, so I figured I'd check them out.

Bad mistake to go at lunch time. The line was almost out the door and they had cones to channel traffic through the drive through. So, the place is either extremely popular or extremely slow.

Where was I going with this... Oh yeah, so I bailed and did Inn & Out instead since it was close by.

Probably because In-n-Out is just potato, salt and oil while most other fries has a ton of other ingredients/chemicals added.

I like their Cajun rice (we call it dirty rice down heah). Yum. Used to get the 'naked chick fingers'. Grilled and no batter on 'em.

Lol, "other chemicals". They just aren't seasoned that well. Fresh cut fries have better flavor anyway.

Shake Shack are pretty new to California, but I did try them the other day. Have to say that was a pretty damn good burger. I think it might have ended up being my new favorite. Their wavy fries tasted good, I'm just not a big fan of the shape. But the burger was amazing...

Yeah, Shake Shack does make a good burger, had one in NYC a few years ago. I still gotta lean toward In N Out though, can't top theirs IMO.
 
It's hard for me to get into food that much. I'm more the sort of person who eats to live vs lives to eat. That doesn't mean I don't like good food. I just don't get that excited about it. My wife and I have friends whom we visit and the minute we arrive they start planning the next meal. Before we're done eating the first meal they're planning dinner. Yeah, I'll take a Culvers butter burger over McDonald's, but I really don't get that excited about it.

And I'm not a big fan of thick burgers. I want the meat to be just one of the flavors I taste.

Only one in California so far, according to their Web site.
 
No In-n-Outs around here. Culver's, 5-Guys, and Smashburger. Freddy's is putting in more of their places, and there are a few Steak 'n Shakes. Winstead's is a local chain.

There is a Larkburger that just opened here. I haven't been there yet, but if it's anything like the one I went to in Fort Collins, it's going to be good.
 
There's a new place here doing a 1/2lb bacon cheeseburger, but instead of buns the buns are grilled cheese sandwiches. It was AWESOME! I usually put ketchup/mustard/mayo on burgers, but this was so good I ate it just the way it was. Buttery cheesy smoky bacon goodness!!!

I'm fortunate enough to have an In-N-Out within a couple miles of my house. My strategy is to get there about 9:30 pm on a weekday, order just a double-double for about $4 (no fries and a glass of water...good for the waistline and frees up a little avgas money) and eat it there while it's nice and hot. Gastronomic heaven on earth. :D

It's one of the few In-N-Outs without a drive-through.

Damn, I'm going there tonight!!!

Twin Peaks Billionaire Bacon Burger is pretty damn good. Plus you get to wash it down with cold beer while taking in the scenery.

Damn that looks good too! And you say the scenery is good too eh, mountains or mounds you looking at are ya? Why won't my Doc let me eat those? :(
 
We have a couple of In-N-Out's here in Austin now. I've seen a couple of people in them once or twice. Probably California refuges.

We have WhatABurger here. In-N-Out is to WhatABurger as a firefly is to mighty Sol. If In-N-Out was an airplane it would be an ultra light made from a lawn chair with a chainsaw motor, WhatABurger would be an SR-71.

WhatABurger doesn't need a secret menu, because there are over 300,000 ways to order a WhatAburger. Make your own damn secret menu.

Words cannot describe the superiority of WhatABurger to all other fast food hamburger chains. Especially In-N-Out.
 
I've been to a WhatABurger in Sealy, TX a few times. Decent, but no comparison to In-N-Out. WhatABurgers do make up in volume what they lack in taste. :)
 
They're ALL good, some prefer one over the other. WTF cares. :loco: I don't. :dunno:
