Could you provide some suggestions, reason, or input so we can develop a plan that works for everyone? The more of us on the same page--the safer this will be.
How 'bout:
Fly downwind over the high ridge and powerlines on the south side of the river.
Chop power abeam the 24 numbers (figuratively speaking since the numbers really aren't there).
Continue flying downwind towards the house on the bluff until you don't have the guts to go any farther.
Wave at the folks at that house who are sitting on their deck having coffee.
Turn base.
Fly base until you don't have the guts to go any farther (because the bluff comes around the bend of the river and is in your way again).
Turn final.
Slip about 100' to the right to align with center line of the runway because you didn't have the guts to fly base all the way to the runway centerline.
Glide between two trees at the end of the runway.
Flare
Land.
Oh, and apply flaps somewhere in there if you can remember to do so.
Seriously, it's not bad but the first time can be interesting for some.
Also, I prefer the "depart up the slot in the bluff" method on a hot day instead of down the river. Down the river has powerlines. The slot in the bluff (about a 10 to 20 degree left turn once you're off the end of 06) is a safer option in my opinion. The only downside is that when you pop out of the top you'll probably be at traffic pattern altitude and in the traffic pattern at BPK! So, I always keep 123.0 in the second radio if/when departing Gaston's so I can listen for BPK traffic along with the potentially arriving traffic at 3M0.
There's usually not much wind to be concerned with because it's in a pretty sheltered valley but I've taken off at Gaston's with as much as a 10kt tailwind. Only in Arkansas would one take off towards a bluff with a tailwind!
