Gastons Website (LIVE)

That is the idea. With a line drawn between the two. If Nick doesn't finish it in the next week--I'll just write it. (hint hint)
Nick, how's that map coming along? :)

It looks like we have a lot of people signed up on the site so far.

Nick finished the code. Now it is up to me to integrate his code into my code. Thanks Nick!

Sorry it took so long. I'm a lazy, lazy, busy, busy person. ;)

Could you provide some suggestions, reason, or input so we can develop a plan that works for everyone? The more of us on the same page--the safer this will be.

How 'bout:

Fly downwind over the high ridge and powerlines on the south side of the river.

Chop power abeam the 24 numbers (figuratively speaking since the numbers really aren't there).

Continue flying downwind towards the house on the bluff until you don't have the guts to go any farther.

Wave at the folks at that house who are sitting on their deck having coffee.

Turn base.

Fly base until you don't have the guts to go any farther (because the bluff comes around the bend of the river and is in your way again).

Turn final.

Slip about 100' to the right to align with center line of the runway because you didn't have the guts to fly base all the way to the runway centerline.

Glide between two trees at the end of the runway.

Flare

Land.

Oh, and apply flaps somewhere in there if you can remember to do so.

Seriously, it's not bad but the first time can be interesting for some.

Also, I prefer the "depart up the slot in the bluff" method on a hot day instead of down the river. Down the river has powerlines. The slot in the bluff (about a 10 to 20 degree left turn once you're off the end of 06) is a safer option in my opinion. The only downside is that when you pop out of the top you'll probably be at traffic pattern altitude and in the traffic pattern at BPK! So, I always keep 123.0 in the second radio if/when departing Gaston's so I can listen for BPK traffic along with the potentially arriving traffic at 3M0.

There's usually not much wind to be concerned with because it's in a pretty sheltered valley but I've taken off at Gaston's with as much as a 10kt tailwind. Only in Arkansas would one take off towards a bluff with a tailwind!

I should probably mention that I'm still working on the website. Right now I'm building a "Pilot Check-In" phone system. You'll be able to call a 1-800 number and update where you're at. You can also record a voice message that people can listen to on the website. There will be a map with everyone's last updated position. Overkill? nah.

Wow! How cool!

Yeah, and I'm trying to sign up for the fly-in itself but the website won't send me the access e-mail!

:dunno:

Tim, I sent you an e-mail a couple minutes ago telling you I manually verified your account.

I'm not sure I get this. Are we supposed to call in with our cell phones from the air ? Whatever will the FCC say:eek:?

Jesse, this just gets cooler and cooler.

It is not meant to be used in the air. You can call before you takeoff so your time of departure is marked. From there you can call if you have to stop for fuel to mark that too. If you get stuck somewhere because of weather you can mark that and leave a voice message so we can all see where you're at online. Basically it is a way to know when people are going to show up--or why they haven't showed up when we expect them.

I say we all call from the air. That would answer the "can I use a cell phone from the air" thread forevermore.
And callers. don't forget to advise your altitude.

Yeah. I have another idea though... A few years ago someone somehow put together some kind of flightaware thing with all of our tail numbers (Troy, was it you?) so that you could see a map of all the planes coming into Gaston's from all over. It was very cool. If the web site's database of tail numbers could feed such a beast to automate it, even better!

Wellp.. There goes any chance of Jesse getting sleep for the next two weeks! ;)

Yeah, that was me... only worked for those on an IFR flight plan; Jesse's solution would work for all who use it.

Something like that will probably come. Right now I'm trying to cover the bases entirely for all the people VFR/IFR. Plus it would be nice to get some more information if someone is running late so that we can help them if need be.

Obviously a manual update system like I'm making has its draw backs. But it will give us the ability to know what is going on and know why someone hasn't showed up that we know departed...God knows you can't trust Lockheed to do it.

FlightAware will pick you up if you get VFR Flight Following from an ARTCC as well. Or, if you're getting FF from a TRACON who enters you into the computer and gives you a squawk you can keep and actual handoffs rather than dropping you when you leave their area. "Request flight following to destination" usually works.

I have heard this but I have never experienced it. I generally always fly with flight following and I've never showed up on it.

Like I said. Flight Aware will probably happen. It is a simple feature.

Kent, although one occasionally sees this, it is rare. I use flight following with a single assigned squawk kept through the entire flight and through multiple sectors and centers, and it has never shown up.

Example: couple of weeks ago, took off and picked up FF from ABQ Center, handed off to Houston Center, to Ft. Worth Center, to Regional Approach (DFW), same squawk but no evidence of me in the 'puters.

Guess it depends... but on what, I do not know.

I always to x-c flying with Flight Following and I've never been able to see my track on Flight Aware. I'm actually going to be taking a tour of the flightaware facility on March 18, I'll be sure to ask them about this. In fact, more people have questions for flight aware...

::eek:ff to start another thread::

Spike, just curious why you wouldn't file for a flight like this. I pretty much always file, so I'm just trying to learn how/why others approach things differently.

Any cell phones in the area please advise.

Lance, that is a Good Question.

The answer is, I was not sure exactly what time we were going to be off, and in addition, I wanted the full range of choices for altitude selection to get best winds (in west Texas, it can matter a lot).

Plus, the weather was better than good. The TAF did call for a possible period of low ceilings in Dallas around my arrival time, so I was ready to pop-up for the terminal area and an approach, but it was clear and good vis (although after being in West Texas, it looked crappy!).

After takeoff, had some play-around time taking pictures, and having pics taken, with a crazy guy in a Bellanca Super-de-duper Viking.

But all that is long way of saying, I just did not bother. If I had been flying in busier airspace for a longer time, I would have filed, but as it is, I have to check in with Regional Approach to fly to ADS anyway, and that was the only place where I needed the attention. I had not a single traffic call until I was inside the Bravo.

I've tried a few times to register for the new Gaston Website but never received the supposed email in return. Also sent you a couple of emails noting the same. I'm hoping at least this will get posted.

Thanks

Dave

Dave,

I activated you manually. I didn't see your e-mails. I'll look for them later. But you should be set now. I've had problems with hotmail. They accept the e-mails without delivering them. Something about my message triggers their spam alarm.

This forum is the best place to resolve these problems. Both Diana and Steve have the ability to manually activate your account. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Ummm, Dave.....maybe it's got something to do with the fact you wouldn't fly that far for a weekend last year.

Love always,
Kaye

I can't remember why, think it had something to do with family medical issues which are still lingering. However I did make it to OSH which is more than I can say for someone else. Oh and BTW Kaye, they do have paved runways at OSH

Love you too Babe :cheerswine:
CU there

Jesse, is there any way we can make a link to Chip's video on the new web site for people to get a feel for the fly-in? It used to be on the old site, but I can't find it now.

If Chip can get me the video I can put it on there. I am working on building YouTube integration into the website (they recently released an API). This way people will be able to upload video on the site and it'll all be organized nicely like the galleries.

This is the stuff I plan on having done before Gastons:
1.) Nick's map code. So you'll be able to see a google map of where people are
2.) YouTube integration so that people can upload videos onto the website
3.) I *might* have the phone application done by then. This just depends on how much time I have.

Wow, Jesse,

You guys are really messin' w/ my head now.

I logged onto the gaston's fly in website over the weekend to check out the attendee list and I was gone. I was nowhere to be found even though I'd signed up a few weeks earlier.

So I sent you an e-mail and re-registered.

When I re-registered I also changed my user ID on the website to "tim & chris" since we both will be attending.

I just now checked the website and I'm still registered but now my name has mysteriously changed from "Tim & Chris" to "Tim Winters".

I changed it back but...

Whoaaa....

I think I'm going thru the twilight zone.

Jesse, until you get that figured out, can you just put a link to the video on the site? :)
