Well, it’s not a secret to the locals; folks from outside the area have a hard time believing there is a sub base here until they see the links.

It’s apparently perfect for the purpose: the deep water channel runs for more than 30 miles, there is little boat traffic-almost none at night-and the lake is acoustically very quiet, thanks to steep sides and a thick layer of silt on the bottom. Plus, I’m sure that during the Cold War navy brass was thinking ‘let’s see the Soviets try and get a spy trawler in here!’

And yes, flying out of Coeur d’Alene is very different than flying around the NY Bravo. I love it here. I’m new to North Idaho, but grew up in Southern Idaho. I just had to wait for retirement to find my way back.

Fall flying in Idaho is a joy!
Man, there is some great flying to be had in Idaho. If I ever win the Powerball I'm gonna buy a place in Sandpoint, or Alpine, or Cabin Creek, or somewhere out there... Just need a place that has a hangar big enough for at least three airplanes: My gas-guzzling go-fast one, and my backcountry STOL one, and my amphibious one. :D

I would need two powerball hits to do all that anymore! :D Good plan!

Thought I recognized it. Me at Thomas Ck; about 35 years ago. Emergency use only now? I used to land at all of them.

All the middle fork (Thomas, Mahoney, Cougar, Lower Loon, Marble) are open. The big creek drainage has some that have been reassigned Emer use (Vines, Mile Hi, Simmons & Dewey Moore). Cabin Creek is still open as normal.

Kicked off my annual fall Phoenix trip today. Chicago to my first overnight, in Roswell New Mexico, in 10.0 hours. Stops in KC and Dodge City. Nasty headwind from IL to western Kansas. At one point I was down to 75ish kts GS. barf. The wind gods lessened their wrath around TX.

That looks like a cable or something.
Are they monitoring traffic to see if they need a stoplight there?
No, they put those water diversion channels on many backcountry strips here to keep water from cutting giant ditches in them when the snow melts. They are very effective!

I was set up to solo on my 16th birthday in 1954. This was at Grand Central Air Terminal in Glendale Calif. Just a hop and a skip from downtown LA.
The field was IFR from the smog. I missed my 16th birthday by almost a week.

Mount Baker looming over Shaw, Lopez, Orcas and Blakely Islands in the San Juans. I flew to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island for breakfast on what might be the last nice day this week.
Where did you eat? My wife and I have often flown up for lunch.
Ever noticed 38WA on Blakely Island?

I had breakfast at the Salty Fox, a coffee shop right across from the ferry terminal. They serve breakfast sandwiches all day long and that's a good thing for a late starter like me. I have noticed 38WA on each flight to the San Juans, but since it is private, I've never landed there. I also admire the private grass strip on Center Island - another gem I'm trying to get invited to land on. I'm also curious about an uncharted grass strip on Shaw Island. The islands are full of public airports, so not having an invite to any of the private strips hasn't been a problem, just an itch I'd like to scratch.

For those who care...

I don't have a personal photo of Center Island, but here's a grab from GE:

Ever landed at Point Roberts? I did a low pass in December 2017, but figured it was too wet. It's a 9 nm flight over Puget Sound so no big deal.
For those elsewhere, Pt. Roberts is a bleb of the USA that projects south on a peninsula from British Columbia, Canada. The bright yellow line in the GE grab is the US/Canadian border. Obviously, you have to drive through Canada or go by boat or plane. Its future is in doubt since the passing of its owner a few years back.
