AITA?

Cash is fine, but it’s the old lady at the grocery store who still insists on paying by check. First, it takes half a millennium for her to find the checkbook in her Samsonite size purse, and then she fills out the whole check at tortoise speed while asking what the total is at least three times over. Holy cow!!!
And she doesn't start digging for the checkbook until after the total is rang up because she was pretending to be a statue while the cashier was busy scanning.

Luckily, I'm usually at the self-checkout station when that happens.

Every time!

What's even better is paying with a smart watch. Don't have to even take the wallet out of the pocket. Boom bam, outta there.

Checkbook, cash, phone, whatever, it burns my *** when people get to that point and are surprised that they have to pay, then proceed to dig through their **** to find/unlock/count their <insert payment method of choice>.
Same as the people who will wait in line for fast food but not look at the menu until asked what they want to order.
And there's a special place in hell for the customers who finish paying then proceed to chat up the cashier for a bit "just being sociable."

Oh the horror of waiting

I hope all'ya'll will endevour to perservere

Preach it Brother Nauga!

I haven't yet made the jump to smart watch, as contactless payment and HRM are the only real benefits FOR ME to owning one. It's a big spend just to have those two features.

Now tapping the iPhone to pay? I do that all the time, love it!

ever get behind that guy that can't find his phone?

oops, left it at home.

oops, now how does he pay for the 32 different items...

That's after standing like a zombie waiting for the cashier to bag all 257 items instead of doing it themselves as the cashier is ringing them up.

This is why we order our staples online and have them delivered. The only things we don’t buy that way are meat, fruit, and veggies.

In that case I'll add one to my rant: Showing up early at the grocery store to do my heavy shopping and finding ~50% of the aisles blocked by the big carts they use to load up orders for pickup/delivery.

Nauga,
whose lawn is untrampled

And the people that leave their cart at the end of the aisle and walk up and down looking for the items they want. I have been tempted to drop a few items in their cart when they aren't looking...

I’m picking up what you’re laying down. Both of the things you mentioned wear me completely out.

So, three pages and no mention of losing the privacy of using cash?

There was recent reporting on AI figuring out who posters/tweeters/ etc are. Won’t be long before every transaction is also tracked by the large companies and or the government

My peeve is twofold.

1) The grocery store puts some sort of display (let's say chips) in the aisle, effectively blocking 1/3-1/2 of it. If there is one other person in the aisle, they will park their cart immediately adjacent to the display, blocking all traffic in the aisle.

2) Same basic thing, but one guy/gal parks a cart on the right side of the aisle. So the next person coming in the opposite direction parks his/her cart abreast of the first cart. Again, blocking the whole aisle.

Watch for it. It is disturbing how often this happens.

Oh, while I'm conveying my distain for people: The family of 7 walking line abreast down the concourse at the airport. Who all stop at once, making everyone flow around them. Hint: Develop a little self awareness. Move to the side BEFORE you stop...

At grocery stores it doesn't matter if you do cash, credit, tap-to-pay...
Regardless, you still have to hit the red "NO I DONT WANT TO GIVE MONEY TO CHARITY" button or announce it to the cashier. My thoughts on that are summed up by this skit.

We call that "mallwalking." Bonus points if you don't leave room to flow around. I go through.

Nauga,
and his throbbing temples

and if you move the cart blocking the aisle, sometimes the person get indignant. (I just laughed at her, which probably made her madder).

and I finally found this:

That clip is probably why/when I lost my infatuation with Meg Ryan. On the other hand, it may have been when I met her brother, who described her in not-so-nice terms. You know, the kind of person who'd hold up a line and expect everyone to think it was OK.

Won't be long?? What do you think banks/credit card companies, grocery stores with "loyalty cards", Amazon and other online merchants, Google, Apple, and hundreds of other companies have been doing all this time?

If we're having a contest for least self-aware, I'll submit this: two people having a conversation in a doorway, the main entrance/exit for the space.

May I submit the car which pulls up along the curb, right in front of the entrance to a store and parks there while waiting on someone? Now everyone entering or exiting the store has to walk around the car.

Brilliant.

May I submit all of the cars that are parked under the loading roof at Lowe’s when it’s raining so I can’t even get my cart full of lumber to my truck?

Is that people being unaware? Or simply just selfish/rude?

How about the people at the bus or subway stop who try to get on without waiting for riders to get off.

In Atlanta for the 94 Olympics, the subway system was overwhelmed. Trains were packed as full as possible, with hundreds waiting to board at some stations. I saw several instances where a train would pull up, the doors would open, and 2 walls of people would meet, resulting in the doors closing and the train departing without anyone getting on or off.

"Pardon the interruption, but do all these folks trying to get in/out need to be part of your conversation?"

One is likely the result of the other. It’s kind of a chicken-and-egg question.
In the case of two people having a conversation in a doorway, I think it's lack of awareness rather than selfishness. Typically after the 3rd or so outsider squeezes between them, one will say "let's scoot over a little bit" and the other will have a confused look.

EDIT: OK, if it's 2 dudes conversing and an attractive woman is squeezing through then maybe...

Thing is, dealing with cash and checks is a pain. Now someone has to make bank drops on a daily/weekly basis. You open yourself up to being robbed or to employees putting their hand in the till. And (assuming you accept checks) you have to deal with bad checks.

I bet going to CC only actually helps the bottom line of most businesses.
I bet you’ve never owned a small business.

Going cashless does not hurt or help as a rule. Depends on the business.
