A bill comes to $6.03. Naturally, I give the person $21.03. Usually, the person gets confused and tries to hand the dollar back to me. I am trying to save time but I fear that it's a net loss.

Am I the apschminki?

I do this often and almost always have to explain what I'm doing. Different generation, bro, 67

Yes - how dare you show your superior math skills to the mathematically challenged?
What's next, you're going to start fatshaming people?

/s, for anyone that didn't get it.

Based on the thread title, it’s assumed that there is an ******* in the transaction, and you said the other person was confused, so…

And on the other end...

I went to a fast food joint the other day. The girl behind the counter was by herself. She took my order while taking drive through orders, handed out orders, counted out my change, ($6.38, I handed her $11.38) and filled a couple containers of fries, all with ease and efficiently.

I was impressed.!!

There's a young person who should learn to fly.

You carry coins? You pay for things with cash?

About the only reason why I go to an ATM these days is to pay our housekeeper when she comes every other week. I also go to the bank once a year to get two straps of $2 bills for my van driver tip money. I have cash in my wallet that is old enough to vote.

If they seem confused I simply tell them "Ask the computer [like you always do]."

Often I dont have all the loose change, but have enough to make my return some number of quarters -- say $10.08 towards a total of $7.83. That lands like masters-level Diff. Eqs.

There are still places not rounding to 5¢ when you pay cash? And you pay cash? Cash in general is just so much slower.

always love hearing people making fun of carrying cash.....yeah because it's SOOOOO inconvenient to carry a few pieces of small paper in your wallet..............

It's not, but a card is quicker, and assuming you got a card that gives some sort of rewards, you can glean a bit of a benefit from using said card.

Change? I'm not even sure what the different coins look like anymore.

Absolutely not; you're just encouraging the development of math skills. ;)

If you really want to confuse 'em, go to the deli counter and ask for 1/3 of a pound. "Is that like a quarter of a pound?"

How's that?
Businesses are charged a fee (typically a percentage of the transaction) for processing a credit card.
Some businesses will "eat" the charge, while others will either pass the additional cost along to the customer, or will offer a discount to customers who use cash.

That's not terribly common.

It is getting a lot more common.
A lot of places don't even hide that cost anymore, but present it as a credit card fee.
Agreed.
Some businesses just raise prices 3% to 5% across the board and don't even mention the charges.
Small businesses with narrow profit margins often struggle with how to deal with those fees and the concern about raising prices or adding charges.

You carry cents?

With our devalued currency I typically just dump any change in the tip jar with whatever cash I want to add, or I throw it at seagulls, it’s the best use of it

Not the donkey's behind, in my opinion. I carry cash and pay with cash regularly, and I have come to terms with the fact that I will have to explain what I am doing when I "pay over" for easier change-making about 98% of the time.

I usually offer/ask if they'd like an amount that will make the change easier, like offering $21 for a $16 item so that they only have to give a five rather than 4 ones

Let's be honest. Who wants to put blow on a credit card?

I know a guy who tried using the company credit card to withdraw 500 bucks from an ATM at 3:30 am... It was a family business.

My Navy Federal debit card is free. My Navy Federal credit card is free (if pay off balance each month, which I do). I get a statement listing all transactions, which I use to track my budget line items.

Cash is dirty and I don’t remember what I spent it on. The only reason I use it is to hide greeting cards and presents from my wife. :)

it's not free for the business

If the business doesn’t charge me extra for using a card, then I don’t care as they’ve already priced it in. In that case I will use my card 100% of the time, since that nets me a 1% minimum discount. If they charge extra for using the card, I’ll likely pay cash.

Using my card earns me either cash back or some sort of points. I don't get any kind of return for using cash, unless it just so happens to be somewhere that gives a cash discount. Oddly enough the service department at the BMW dealership was the last place I saw that have a discount for cash. Or a fee for using a CC, however you want to look at it.

Now, if you enjoy hassling people working at crappy retail jobs, then cash is your preferred monetary vehicle.

Come to think of it, me too. The dealership[*] charged a CC fee, but they waived it not only for cash but I could also have gone around it via a debit card.

[*] - I probably could have been OK with using a "universal" coolant, but I was a sucker stickler for abiding by the service manual that specified factory branded coolant.
