AITA?

Using my card earns me either cash back or some sort of points. I don't get any kind of return for using cash, unless it just so happens to be somewhere that gives a cash discount. Oddly enough the service department at the BMW dealership was the last place I saw that have a discount for cash. Or a fee for using a CC, however you want to look at it.
As others have mentioned, many businesses are getting tired of being r*ped by the credit card companies or whichever entity is tacking on fees for the point-of-sale machine usage. Just since the start of the year, I've noticed that my auto repair shop and two restaurants I frequent have started adding fees to pay by credit card. On a $25 restaurant bill it's not such a big deal, but I'm now paying for my car repairs by check. (Had to dust off my checkbook and remember how to fill one out....)

Thing is, dealing with cash and checks is a pain. Now someone has to make bank drops on a daily/weekly basis. You open yourself up to being robbed or to employees putting their hand in the till. And (assuming you accept checks) you have to deal with bad checks.

I bet going to CC only actually helps the bottom line of most businesses.

Then why am I seeing multiple businesses starting to incentivize cash/check usage?

Either eat it on the fees or eat it on cashiers with their fingers in the till (see other thread).

Think the inverse. They have created an excuse to charge 70% (?) of their customers a 3% premium.

I doubt many car repairs will be paid in cash, but if they are, it also seems unlikely that the customer service guys will get away with skimming much.

The CC issuers (AmexMC/Visa) used to have as part of their contract with merchants a restriction against charging extra for CC use. This changed with a class action lawsuit by retailers a few years ago. Some states restrict charging the fees.

(Most of) That 3% isn't going to the merchant, it's going to the banks.

Right, but they (the restaurant, grocery store, or other business) is avoiding the problems and costs associated with cash and checks. Ultimately, the businesses are coming out ahead.

Car repairs, yeah. Places where transactions are much smaller and more frequent however...

In my line of work, our customers don't typically walk out the door with a product. It's a process that takes time. We accept all major credit cards, and the processing company is who collects the 3 to 6% of the transaction from us. We do not "bake it in," nor do we mark up credit card transactions above cash or check sales. For obvious reasons, we prefer a check. The office manager uses the "mobile deposit" feature offered by the bank (free of charge) to deposit the check in the company account. If the check bounces, we just simply stop all progress on the contract and don't place our order with the supplier. Since we require a 50% deposit, most of our customers will make good on the rest of the amount due without a lot of coaxing. The credit card companies themselves are not pocketing the fees, it's the company such as Square, Stax and Clover that processes the cards and acts as a go-between for the consumer and the retailer. If there were a way to circumvent the greedy processors, trust me, we would!

I think that might be part of it, I'm in the northeast. Different mindsets/cultures..
In CT gas stations have different cash and credit prices (how they treat debit cards varies). NY does the same, and most restaurants there now have a cash discount.

I pay no fees for my debit card, and the credit cards I pay for, provide benefits that are worth more than I pay for them. But every card issuer offers free cards. And I wouldn't say businesses are getting raped by the banks, the infrastructure, the fraud fighting, the offering of credit, is not free either, so it's fair for the banks to be compensated. In Texas, it's illegal to charge extra for debit cards or to charge a credit card fee in excess of what it actually costs the business.

Cash in general is just so much slower.
That's okay, I have time. Besides, if they were in a hurry, they'd stop asking me to join their loyalty program.

GeorgeC,
who is older and has better insurance

are you really sticking with this? it takes like 8 seconds to pay with cash, gimme a friggin break.
Well . . . that really depends on the cashier and his or her math skills - or lack thereof . . . Jus' sayin'

I've been paying with cash for 150 years. I've seen far more delays from people paying with credit cards, waiting for authorization, finding a pen, signing paperwork, or mo-mo's trying to figure out how to use their phone to pay.....I mean really, ffs.

Signing for a credit card transaction? I think the last time I had to sign after using my credit card is about the same time I last used the strip thing on the back instead of the chip.

Yup…way easier for people to use stolen credit card numbers these days.

And you never have to pay.
Cash stolen? Gone forever. Debit card stolen? You have to hope you can get your own money back. Credit card stolen? One click on the app and it's solved.

Took a few more than one click on Friday. And it’s certainly inconvenient to not have a credit card for, in this case, two weeks if you were planning to use it.

The only change I carry is a few quarters in the truck for shopping carts at Adli.

Those things are the best deal in town!

I would think it's harder, given that many just use their watch/phone and leave the actual card at home.
Yeah, and the whole point of the chips are that they are much harder to forge compared to the magnetic strips. And I doubt that the 'ol signature theatrics really made a dent in the amount of successful fraudulent transactions.

I have to sign about once a week. Sometimes on a touch pad or tablet, sometimes on a paper receipt. Random places.

The signature screen is a convenient place to solicit you for a gratuity. :)

Scribbling an indecipherable signature was about the least effective way to prevent fraud. Right up there with a SS Card as a form of ID.

Nothing *******-ish about carrying cash or paying an amount to simplify how much change you get back. Though it may take the cashier a beat to figure it out.

Many restaurants by me offer between 5-10% discounts for customers paying cash. Both A&P shops I use charge a 3.5% fee to use card. Hence I find many occasions to use cash and check. I get the whole "earn rewards" on your card incentive.
But when a place is offering you 5-10% off your bill, right here, right now -- to use cash -- your rewards are almost certainly not going to compete with that. Merchant gets preferred payment, you save money. It's win/win.

When I'm shopping at the grocery store/department store/starbucks/etc and the bill is the same either way? Card.

Ever been in line behind a boomer that is digging around for change before? I have. Last time I told them I would be willing to pay for their groceries, and they looked at me like I was a space alien.

I have noticed a growing number of places charging to make online payments for utilities or similar. The last place we rented wanted a $15 "convenience" fee for paying online. I walked into their office with a check every month.

From my personal experience, cash is fastest if the person has an idea of how much the bill will be and gets out his money beforehand, but card is faster for zoned out shoppers. The whole "card on the phone" thing has worked once out of all the times I've seen someone try it, and it usually takes 5-10 minutes before the person gives up, probably because they don't have any other method to pay.

25 years ago it was the other way around. There was a group at work who'd go out for lunch occasionally, and I used to dig on a colleague who insisted on paying with a credit card (at the counter) when the rest of us were paying with cash. It was a local pizza joint that had a lunch buffet, and the price was always the same. All the rest of us would have our exact payment in hand with cash, and we moved through without delay. Then it'd be his turn, and the point-of-sale device had to dial the home office and establish a connection to report the transaction, which took a few 10s of seconds, slowing down the whole process. But by golly, he was gonna get his miles or whatever on that $8.63 transaction...

Whenever I’m in Florida, yes.

Cash is fine, but it’s the old lady at the grocery store who still insists on paying by check. First, it takes half a millennium for her to find the checkbook in her Samsonite size purse, and then she fills out the whole check at tortoise speed while asking what the total is at least three times over. Holy cow!!!

The people trying to use the gas pumps at Costco, OMG. Takes them forever trying to slide different cards and push buttons. How the hell do these people even make it through life? Yeah, these people could never be pilots if gas pumps befuddle them so.
