So this year was my first and last year to Air Venture. I looked forward to trying and taking home some Kringles. Got up,7am Sunday, got one the road by 9am. I arrived at Racine to find some really inconsiderate people had wiped out all the Kringles.

O&H is the only place to buy them.

The best place to reliably obtain kringle, in my experience, is at 6Y9 breakfast. I don't even know how it gets there, it's just always there.

Those website photos make me think I need to find kringle, something I was ignorant of prior to this thread.

My trader joes has no kringle, but it does have a decent babka.

If only they offered online ordering and shipment, poor @Clip4 wouldn't have to live out the rest of his life wondering what might have been if he had only woken up at 5am and got on the road by 7am.
They do sell them in limited varieties at Trader Joe's. I saw raspberry and almond the last time I was there.

Also, they're not difficult to make. I attempted it one boring saturday and my memory was that it took about 2 hours from taking the ingredients out to pulling it out of the ove.

I thought this was going to be a rant about generators, loud music and kids on scooters violating campsite etiquette.

I agree. My trip to OSH this year was ruined because of the rudeness of my own airplane not allowing me the useful load to carry a few cases of Spotted Cow back home with me :( Unacceptable. Guess I need a bigger airplane for next year :)

So, you decided to let your wife fly back with you vs cases of Spotted Cow?

 That would have been the last Spotted Cow I would have consumed.... if she were one of my passengers lol. Nah, she didn't make the trip. But the other two people would have been pretty miffed if I dumped their gear (or them!) in exchange for some smooth, delicious New Glarus

Hot take:

Spotted Cow is just okay.

I don't understand the obsession with it. I guess most people have only had lousy beer, so even mid beer is a revelation?

 Nomex won't protect you from these flames

Honestly, I think it is good because it's impossible to get here (DC area) and - whenever I have access to it, it's because I'm doing something fun. So yeah, it's probably not the best beer I have ever had in my life (and I have had better than lousy beer), but it just reminds me of a good time I guess?

But yeah, that's a valid question - is it really that great? I dunno...

That's actually a good point. Being much closer to the source (and having WI relatives who are also obsessed) I see it on a regular basis. Given the choice between that and bud light (which is generally the choice at said relative's house), I'll take the SC.

I would love to know how much of a measurable bump they get from airventure. Can't swing a dead cat without hitting a SC at OSH.

There's another one called Moon Man from the same brewery that I like better but it's harder to find. Spotted Cow is just a solid beer everyone likes I think.

When I was a kid we drove from Connecticut to Colorado to visit my Aunt, Uncle and cousins. I remember my Dad filling the trunk with Coors to bring home.

reminds me of my cheese curd thread....

It's interesting how the human animal is drawn towards things just because it can't be had in our home territory.... good or not.... if it's not available then it's special.

you mean....like.....kringle?

Ok, now cheese curds are amazing. At OSH or here at home or anywhere. I'll die on that hill.
I mean, cheese is hard to screw up. They're never gonna be *bad*. Some of them (including some of the ones served on the field at OSH, sadly) are just "Meh."

Well, between me and Kent, if he can work it in, we can cover anyone’s Spotted Cow, Kringle and curd needs at Gaston’s. Or Moon Man, which I agree is better. Okay, maybe not O&H from me as that doesn’t make an appearance until north of my base.

Fun fact: New Glarus uses the same and proprietary/historical yeast across their beer line, and it is archived at UofW.

They also have one called "Two Women" and another called "Totally Naked". If you can get the opportunity, you should try them sometime. Maybe even try the beer.

Funny.
IMO they’re both better than ****ty Spotted Cow

When I was in college, each fall I drove from Idaho to school in the east. Always with two cases of Coors buried under the other gear. Each fall it did wonders for my social life, at least until the Coors ran out.

Also each fall it seems like at least one student making a similar trip got caught on the wrong side of the Mississippi River with the beer, and was forced to dump out each and every can under the watchful eye of a cop, before being allowed to proceed.

Didn't they make a movie about this? Something about a flying black car with a decal of a golden chicken on the hood...

Years and years ago, Flying magazine wrote an article about the illegal transport of Coors in Air Force aircraft.

Don't remember the details of the article, but the art department had generated a magnificent bit of pre-photoship editing, making the front section of a KC-135 to look like a Coors can.

They did indeed. My own Coors smuggling was done in a '73 Mercury Monterey, minus Sally Field. It neither attracted the attention of Hollywood, nor Sheriff Buford T. Justice.

Many years ago, when I was living in Colorado, through pure dumb luck my family and I scored a VIP tour of the Coors factory in Golden. At one point, we reached a set of piping with a spigot, from which our guide poured a small amount of beer into glasses clearly set there for the purpose. He informed us that this was the freshest possible Coors. Right after brewing, but before it is ever placed into a keg or bottle. We're talking minutes old. It was, and remains to this day, the best beer I have ever tasted. Crisp, fresh, and delightful taste. Absolutely amazing, and I say that as a guy who doesn't usually touch Coors, Budweiser, or similar stuff.

At the conclusion of the tour, he led us to the tasting room where the regular tours get a couple of free beers. That beer was out of kegs perhaps several days old. It tasted just like normal Coors and nowhere near as good as what came out of that spigot. Moral of the story: get yourself a VIP tour of the Coors factory in Golden and find that spigot.
