Why We Need Aviation User Fees

Just got the same thing. I loathe this administration.

    Flying Wild Alaska S2

Agreed. It's not possible to accurately explain the true difference between IMC and VMC in one brief sentence that the non-flying public is going to grok. This show is great because it makes flight interesting and somewhat magical again to a public that generally associates aviation with...

    Flying Wild Alaska S2

I don't know if it's cool for pilots to like this show but I look forward to it every week. The junior high girl in me wants to know if John Ponce and Ariel are dating. Giggle giggle.

    What skills do you have?

Spotting patterns and solving problems. Serves me well in all facets of life.

    Vans RV in KLNK area

I'd really like to go for a flight in a Vans RV. I'm willing, of course, to pay for as much of the flight as the pilot's certification level will allow. So if you live in or around Lincoln Nebraska, have access to an RV, and would be willing to show me the plane, PM me. :)

Props to Bad Elf, the iPad/iPod GPS guys

So I ran my Bad Elf through the wash. Contacted the Bad Elf guys basically asking them if there was anything I could do to fix it. Answer was no, of course, but they gave me 20% off a new one even though it was clearly my bad. Great service, which is pretty dang rare these days.

Reno Air Races 2011.... Serious Crash

Yeah, I've explained to at least five people in the last couple of days that age most likely had very little to do with this. The couple of people that I've taken flying, it was easy to say, "You know that little wheel I'm always messing with as we gain speed? Now image we're going 4x as...

    My most amazing flight yet

Maybe I'm just feeling conservative because a very experienced guy lots of us on PoA knew went in yesterday in beautiful, cool VFR weather. Or maybe our flight training has given us different perspectives. I dunno. But you're the PIC. Your passenger, unless they're a certificated pilot...

    My most amazing flight yet

This was my thought. I'm a 90 hour pilot too and if this had been my flight I'd be cringing at how many chances I took with someone else's life and then kicking my own ass for the next few days. Bloody irresponsible. Maybe I'm boring but unless you're going up in a stunt plane aircraft...

How to Fly the B-17 - 1943 Army Air Force training videos

Absolutely fascinating. The part in the second section where they talked about not deviating from the settings prescribed in the flight computer reminded me of Fate is the Hunter where they were flying DC-3/C-47s and C-87s over the Atlantic and they figured out that the 'scientifically...

    What is your success rate...

I don't have that many attempts, but Kansas City into Downtown or JoCoExec I've never been turned down. Denver into Rocky Mtn Metro, only once of four attempts. I don't even try anymore...I'm coming from Lincoln so I just plan to fly under it as it might make 5 minutes difference and those...

Good college major for flying as a career?

"When in doubt" was the operative verbiage there. If a guy knows he wants to go into engineering, by all means. But at 18 years old, you have no effing idea what you're going to do in life. You think you do. You don't. I, for example, was convinced I was going to be an ME/EE of some...

What to expect flying into midway?

Am I the only doofus that read the thread title and thought, "How the hell is Denny going to fly halfway across the Pacific?"

Good college major for flying as a career?

Great advice. When in doubt, get a business degree. Make sure to take a couple of electives in accounting and business law.

Can I charge passengers for engine overhaul?

Why we follow the rules wasn't really my question; I grok the social contract. The IRS audits, the DEA flies around in planes with FLIR looking for grow lamps, and the cops set up speed traps. Does the FAA do anything similar in policing PPL flight funding? I've been ramp checked, but...

Can I charge passengers for engine overhaul?

This is moderately OT, but I'm curious as to how the FAA polices some of this stuff. How are they going to know if my father-in-law gives me a couple hundred bucks cash for flying him around to look at his fields? (I haven't and he hasn't, pure hypothetical). I got this rule pounded...

    Age and insurance

My apologies if this has been asked before, but I'm curious as to whether the insurance carriers a) consider age at all and b) if they do, how much weight is assigned for a pilot. I'm thinking a) yes and b) almost none.

    "Chicago Code" final episode

That's Fox for you. I love the shows they come up with and I hate them for canceling them (Firefly, Arrested Development, Lie to Me to name a few).
