    Grimes Rotating Beacon

Hi All. The Grimes Rotating Beacon in the Cherokee had begun to spin very slowly (if at all). Plane is in for annual, so I decided to see what was wrong with the beacon. I hooked the beacon up to a 13.8VDC source with an ammeter in series and found that when stalled, the beacon was pulling...

Aircraft Battery lifespan, health, and maintenance

The Gill G35 installed in my plane is beginning to go (or so I think). Symptoms include slow cranking the last few times I have started the plane. The slow cranking is, of course, exacerbated by winter weather, and a cold soaked plane/battery/hangar. The first start of the day exhibits the...

    Cleared into Bravo (Chicago)!

Flying home from Peoria to Lake in the Hills tonight (PIA - 3CK) and got a transition through the new part of the Bravo. I was descending through ~8000 and was about 5 miles from the new Bravo airspace (which almost extends to DeKalb) when I decided to call and ask for a transition.... Chicago...

    Narco AT50A for sale/ebay

Hi All. I am selling my old AT50A transponder on eBay. It works ok, but is missing the dataplate and sends a constant IDENT (ATC really likes this) when the unit is exposed to too much ambient heat (see ebay link for details). Might be good as a backup, or if you live in the far North, or...

    Touch and Go fees?

A friend of a friend got a bill in the mail for doing T&Gs at KHTO (East Hampton, NY). I have no idea how many T&Gs, nor how many he was billed. KHTO is untowered, so I guess the FBO does the counting and accounting. I have received bills in the mail for landing fees (for example, at...

New Avionics. Do I need a Yellow Tag?

Hi All. I bought a Narco AT165VS to replace the aging AT50A in my Cherokee. The box showed up last week and my mechanic is going to slide it in the tray, and do the transponder certs and logbook entries. Question for the collective wisdom of POA: Do I need a yellow-tag, 8130, or some other...

    Taxiway markings

A friend and I were discussing the new runway crossing procedures. Ie, something like "Cherokee 62R, exit on Bravo2 taxiway, Bravo to the ramp, cross rwy 4." Our discussion evolved a bit and we began to talk about runway and taxiway markings. I am curious - are there any airports where...

Tuesday airshow - Motorglider/Observation Plane, what was it?

Hi All. I was at OSH on Tuesday. Around 3pm, there was a warbird/tribute flight. It started with WWI Fokkers, then progressed to various other military aircraft, T-6s, T-28s, T-34s, C-47s, P-51s, and several different types of recon/liaison aircraft. There were 3 burnt yellow motor-gliders...

Grand Caravan. Wow. I want one.

I went flying today. As I walked into the FBO to place a fuel order, I noticed a really nice Grand Caravan on the ramp. Turns out it is a personal airplane vs a freight dog. The owner and his wife use it as a cruiser, and best of all - it had two motorcycle/scooters in the back that they use...

    Getting into Gliding

So a friend and I have made plans to take a few glider intro flights this summer. I know very little about sailplanes. What kinds of things should one look for in a gliding school / club ? If it matters, this would be in the Chicago area, so tow and then thermal gliding, not mountain/ridge...

    Green Laser(ed)

Well, it finally happened. On the SW side of Chicago (near Bolingbrook, IL) at 3200MSL (~2400 AGL), I got green lasered. One quick swipe of the laser got my attention, and of course, I then looked right at the ground to see 'what was that?'. The person then retargeted the laser on the plane...

Remember to recycle your oil changes immediately

Tip... Remember to recycle the used oil from your oil change ASAP. If not... you may find that while you are pre-flighting... Your 3 yr old daughter has decided to play in the bucket of used oil. :mad2: At least she did not drink it!!!

    ATC & Accomodating

I had a really great experience with ATC yesterday. Nothing too special, but demonstrative of the great service ATC continues to provide us GA pilots. I flew from 3CK (Lake in the HIlls, IL. NW chicago burbs) to VYS (Illinois Valley Regional, located in the North/Central part of IL). There...

    ARINC (communications)

I was just talking to a pilot friend and he asked about a listing for ARINC in the AFD (the air-to-ground frequency. Not the standards for avionics interfaces). I have seen ARINC listed on many AFD pages, and I have noticed that it usually shares the frequency that one would use to hail an...

    Electric Preheat for engine

Dan's post, along with cooler weather hitting Chicago has me thinking about preheat for my Cherokee 180 (Lyc O-360) this winter. I moved hangars this summer and the new hangar does not have a heater, nor is it insulated. It does have electricity, with the bill being included in the ground...

Ionosphere VHF skipping - what's your farthest?

I flew from Chicago to Colorado a few weeks ago, and while in Eastern Nebraska (near Wahoo, NE - AHQ) , both the approach controllers and I heard several calls that must have been ionosphere skips. One to Madison Approach on 120.10. (342nm) Another to a Minnesota airport, I believe Duluth...

    Port-a-port Hangar - roof strength?

Hi All. T-Hangar owners/users. Is it safe to walk on the roof of a Port-a-port hangar (assuming it is in good condition)? I am about 215# and a bit hesitant to head up there to repair a broken turbine vent fan. I would appreciate your comments. -Nathan

    A380 Takeoff on Friday

Was anyone else amazed at how quickly it rotated? I was pretty far back from the flightline (standing in the homebuilt/Lancair parking area). It seemed like the A380 was airborn by about the vintage/classic parking, which would make it a ~4500 foot takeoff roll. Very impressive.
