    Merry Christmas

I've taken my flying to a new level this year and I am very thankful to have this community along for the journey. A lot of learning and a lot of laughs can be had on POA. Thanks and Merry Christmas to all of you. Andrew

    Advice on flying into KIND

I'm looking to travel to Indianapolis (IND) from Nashville (JWN). Based on where I'm staying, KIND is the most convenient. Is it reasonable to fly into the big airport there? I'll be in a SR20 and I'm instrument rated. Any insights on costs for landing fees and overnight parking. It looks...

    Approach or Departure?

When departing a satellite airport near, but not in, Class C, should I address them as Approach or Departure? My real life example is departing JWN and calling BNA.

    Question for Cincinnati area pilots

I'd like to fly from Nashville to Cincy tomorrow for some Skyline Chili. Does anyone know of an airport with a Skyline nearby, cheap fuel and low or zero FBO fees? Oh and sharks with laser beams on their foreheads.

Flight Following turn into an accident discussion site

I politely request that the people who run POA consider making a forum dedicated to accidents. It would be nice to separate the fun and interesting stuff from the sobering. I am interested in both topics, just not intermingled. Thanks for considering. Andrew

    Surveillance approach

I did a practice surveillance approach (ASR) today at HSV. It was a lot of fun. When he said: "This is your final controller, do not respond to any more communications." It was hard not to repeat it back. :-)

    First IFR XC

I passed my checkride on Monday and flew from Nashville to Memphis (and back) today. MQY - M01 in a 172. It was a great trip. It sure is different flying in those clouds without another pilot sitting in the right seat. It was pretty cool to watch two T6’s land. Those T6 pilots taxi just...

Is the Hinch Mountain VOR (HCN) in Crossville, TN, out of service?

My buddy told me HCN is permanently out of service. However, I still see routes using it on Foreflight and it shows up in recent IFR charts. Any insights? Here is the NOTAM: HCH CSV 06/6023 NAV TACAN AZM OUT OF SERVICE 1506151901-PERM

    IFR Checkride Flight Planning Question

Instructions are to flight plan: MQY CHA TYS MQY with approaches at each airport. My aircraft is /G. I'm not sure if I should plan airways / VOR or just Direct-to. I also don't think I should pre-select my approaches before I file. I've read plenty of POA remarks on this topic. In real...

Do I need to do a PT in this case?

In the VOR approach for KSYI, if I'm coming in from the North on a heading of 180: Cleared for the approach. Not on vectors. 1. Do I need to pass over the SYI VOR first? 2. Do I always have to do the course reversal?

    3-Day IFR Adventure

Later this morning my flight instructor and I are heading out on a 3-day IFR training trip. We are starting in Nashville and heading to the Florida Keys. The first leg: MQY --> PDK. I want to thank everyone on POA for the advice, support, and encouragement. I'm very excited about the trip...

    Routing Question KJWN --> KMQY

I want to fly VFR from KJWN to KMQY. The direct route is through the Nashville Class C. I had a CFII recommend I stay under the shelf, but that seems dangerous and unnecessary to me. Should I: 1. Somehow get clearance before departing? 2. Take off and then contact Nashville Approach? 3...

    VFR Routing question

Any advice on how to get from KJWN to M34? There's a MOA and a restricted area on the direct route. I would rather not go all the way around. /G

My Dream Airplane - Nuclear Powered

I just read an article about wastebasket-sized nuclear power plants. Image your favorite airframe, Cessna, Cirrus, Diamond, Cub, Baron, Bonanza, Moony, Waco, etc. Except with an electric engine powered by a miniature nuclear power plant. This plane would never need re-fueling and it would fly...

    Below glidelope?

If I'm on a precision approach and I find myself below the glideslope, say by one tick mark, should I climb to intercept or hold altitude until I intercept? For the sake of this question, let's assume I'm right on the localizer.

Help me plan my IFR adventure

I'm a new instrument student. Part 61. I still need 27 hours of sim or actual IMC and 24 hours of XC. I also still need to complete the long IFR XC. I've already passed the written. My CFII has agreed to accompany me on a 3-day IFR training trip. We are starting in Nashville (KMQY) and the...
