    Visual approach clearance

That is my SOP. Always a good idea especially when there is more than one runway.

    Cleared Direct

Actually, ATC typically isn't going to tell you what the weather is at your destination. There going to ask if you have the "current weather/ATIS" or "advise when you have the weather". That is typically the big hint where you say "yes" and I'd like to fly the XYZ approach with PDQ as the IAF.

    Water in my tanks

In case the message hasn't been delivered clearly enough. #1 Water, any water, in the fuel tank is very unusual and needs to be dealt with immediately. #2 Always sump your fuel tank, every time, no exceptions. I've been flying for almost 20 years. I've sumped water maybe twice and never more...

Need advice on partnership in Grumman Tiger

My 1976 AA5-B was my first plane and I later got my IFR ticket in it. No issue recommending it as a 1st airplane.

    Navy Base Shooting (Norfolk)

With a CAC card you may enter the base anytime. We often work graveyard shifts on projects where the equipment has to be up during the day. Searching every person and vehicle is simply not practical. There is a huge amount of traffic entering our military bases. Even with an ID check the...

    Motorcycle in the back

Been there done that more that once.... it was a Lance not a "6" but no difference. I also managed to get a love seat into that plane. That was quite a trick.

US Airways Blows Tire On Take Off

What is with all the people and their carry on luggage! They out to be fined or at least publicly spanked, what if the plane caught fire and people were seriously injured because Ms. Dipweed just had to retrieve her freeking purse from the overhead bin.

    Gulfstream Down in Nashville

PIREP reports of moderate ice on the approach. If he shot more than one, which it appears he did, it is possible that he loaded up with ice.

    just another scam

My wife and I both had the same thing at exactly the same time a couple days ago.

Cow Fart Explosion, Film at 11

Having spent my youth working on a dairy farm I actually can believe it. Those dairy cows produce an unbelievable amount of cement like poo and farts.

Multiple Nav / GPS Failures...Lesson Learned

FWIW: ATC is there to help if you really needed it. I was good that you were able to sort it out with VORs; however, don't hesitate to ask for assistance if you need it. Fly the plane 1st. Been too many accidents where the pilot was distracted with an issue such as the one you had. FYI -...

    IFR Training Question...Just Started!

I prefer night as it really makes you focus on the instruments; less peripheral vision to help you cheat. I think the instructor will be the limiting factor; he/she may not want to conduct training at night.

IFR training without GPS? (VOR, DME, glideslope only)

I think you will be just fine. There are more than a few pilots (me included) who flew for years IFR prior to having GPS. Some of us even had a Loran! I think you will be a better IFR pilot if you learn "the old fashion" way. Having to use a CDI and To/From to figure out your location...

    ILS or RNAV request

Might be wrong, but I think the primary issue with your "plan" is the GPS only loads one approach at a time (ILS or GPS). If you push the CDI button I believe the GPS will simply revert back to the standard guidance to the last fix/airport; not the GPS approach. To change from the ILS to the...

    ILS or RNAV request

In theory you could but in practical terms if the ILS failed you should go missed, fly the missed as published or instructed, delete the ILS from the flight plan, and load the GPS approach. I will sometime punch in the GPS LPV into my 530W and the ILS in my second NAV/CDI for giggles and grins...
