Your CFI is a Jewish lady from Brooklyn

Is that account a relative you're trying to push views to?
I'd be shocked if his intention was to make bigly affiliate marketing money by posting it to a low traffic site like PoA...

Was that supposed to be funny?
No, it was supposed to be a totally serious documentary about brooklyn-based flight instructors.

Ha... I'm still laughing. I grew up on Long Island, was based there for a while, and flew plenty. Some people need translators to decipher the accent of some of the flight instructors, and ATC. Funny stuff...

She's in Florida now, as might be expected.
Is that account a relative you're trying to push views to?
No, but since I'm a CFI who is a Jewish guy from Brooklyn, she could be. I'll need to work harder on the accent.

I thought it was pretty ugly, to be honest. Laughing at accents & stereotypes is not a good look for anybody.

I have neighbors/friends from Queens and they sound just like that. Lovable accent.

Never be surprised at how desperate people are for external affirmation.

Documentary? I kinda believe this. Most CFIs are trash.

Also I lived in both NY and NJ. Still don't see why anyone would think this is funny. But hey, you'all do you'all

Holy mother. Different people have different opinions. Who ever woulda thunk it?

Senses of humor range from completely warped to none at all. Personal taste and perspective. As Mel Brooks said about the difference between comedy and tragedy,

“Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.”

Most CFIs are trash.
Develop better tools stream line the AIM and develop *some* some sort of feedback loop to get rid of garbage CFIs.
The barrier to PPL isn't cost, its GARBAGE CFIs. Scrap this SP nonsense, develop CFIs into competent instructors and you'll lower the PPL fail out rate from 80% to some lower number.
A CFI? As someone who's had to suffer through 8 CFIs during my PPL training I would not rely on a CFI for this information (aka 99% of CFIs are trash).
CFIs are horrible at teaching situational awareness.
Because they deserve it. CFIs have an 80%+ failure rate. Students get their PPL because they have more cash than most CFI's have ability. I have CFI horror stories than I can tell for days. The CFI system sucks.

Perhaps its becuase the CFIs are treuly, statisitcally, and objectively just trash. They are not the 'gatekeepers'. They are the problem.

Has everyone else noticed a trend here?

Not all laughing is the same. I laughed, but a laugh of recognition and remembering. I do archaeology and my supervisor is a Jewish woman (PhD, internationally known scholar) who talks just like that. When I hear that accent, I smile and remember some good days on digs being taught and yes, reprimanded, with a few "oy veh" moments thrown in. Not a stereotype when it''s the real thing.

How many Jewish mothers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

None - "I'll just sit here in the dark and freeze"
A staple of the Borsch (sp?) belt.

Folks upstate tawk like that too. As a kid, I concluded I was related to Bugs Bunny because he sounded like my family.
:) only people that think Westchester County is "upstate".

I worked with a guy who moved up here 30 years ago, and to save his life he still couldn't pronounce the 'r' at the end of dumpster.

I didn't watch the video, but can tell from here - the accent is NYC, the guilt is Jewish, and you can make fun of both of those things. A little ribbing is part of the melting pot process. They have thick skins down there and can very much dish it back out. Their favorite target is typically NJ, and that's probably because they're not sure Chicago is a real place.

I find this thread itself interesting, because I didn't get the humor in the posted video at all. I mean, I get it's a parody of what I guess is stereotypical NYC Jewish mother behavior. But it's not funny to me, most likely BECAUSE a) I'm not Jewish, 2) grew up like 2000 miles from NY, and iii) have never even lived anywhere close. So for me, it's just someone doing an accent acting as a CFI. Not funny to me at all.

BUT, at least I realize that there are many different types of humor, and just because I don't get it doesn't mean it's not hilarious to somebody else - and judging by this thread, those who grew up around that stereotype find it really funny - which is amazingly interesting to me, because I don't get it at all.

But "me getting it" is not a requirement for something to be funny to others.

What's the difference between an Italian grandmother and a Jewish grandmother?

The Italian grandmother says, "You better eat this, or I'll kill you!"
The Jewish grandmother says, "You better eat this, or I'll kill myself!"

Everyone is different and we should all be able to laugh at ourselves. That extends to laughing at others sometimes. SNL and Howard Stern wouldn't have stayed on the air if it wasn't true. I'm not a big fan of SNL or Howard Stern as I don't find most of their stuff funny, but many others do. The Craig Ferguson talk show? I liked it a lot. I also liked the Greaseman on DC101 when it was on. He did bits like Seargent Fury in Vietnam, and a western Yiddish lawman character named Irving Greasemanowitz with a 10 gallon yamica. He did another bit like the Godfather, and others where Clint Eastwood and Jackie Gleason were gay. The guy was a nut and made fun of everyone, including rednecks like me.

One of my favorites is Jeanie Robertson. A humorist from NC who is 6'2" and wanted to do basketball hook shots as her talent when she competed for Miss America in the 1950s. Most of her stories like "Don't Bungee Jump Naked" or "There is no Red Porche" are gut busting funny to me, but not so to some others.

My point is we have to be able to see the humor in every day situations so we don't take ourselves too seriously. The ability to laugh at ourselves is almost as important as any other aspect of our lives.
