What did you do today?

Almost declared an emergency.
I almost declared an emergency as a student once.

It was a night solo flight. I just leveled off, then reduced power when a loud banging noise started. So I added power which did not change anything. It sounded as if the cowling had come loose and was getting hit by the prop. I trouble shot for a few seconds, then realized that was dumb, I need on the ground now.!!

I grabbed the emergency landing checklist. 1.Fasten seat belts.

So I grabbed one belt and reached for the other one...... Oh fudge....

Bought Concert tix for 3 shows. Joe Bonamassa with Gov’t Mule, Harry Connick Jr, and Winona Judd with Melissa Eldridge.
Good Summer.
Saw Gov't Mule open for ZZ Top. The guy in front of us was rocking out to Mule. When they were done he left. Apparently wasn't a fan of ZZ Top.

Not today, but yesterday, got my plane scheduled into the shop on April 2nd for annual inspection (that expires at midnight on March 31st).

I saw Joe Bonamassa in concert many, many years ago in Des Moines. I had never heard of him but I knew the guy that was doing all the graphic design work for his tee shirts/merchandising etc and he talked me into going with some free comped front row tickets. That guy can play. It wasn't until a few years ago I learned he was good, extraordinary good, even as kid.

Debated visiting @eman1200 to experience some 70kts tailwinds. Alas, too many other weekend chores to do. I’m pretty sure he is out of town too.

Had too many drinks with a customer/associate. I think I got his wife convinced he needs his ppl to visit the hunting property up north.

I like food...

(Yesterday, actually.) SWMBO and I drove to Georgia to visit the nice young couple who are looking after our grandbaby. We would have preferred to fly, but Winter Haven had a 1500' ceiling and the forecast for a return on Sunday looked pretty crappy, too. The drive was awful. What typically takes 4 to 4.5 hours took nearly 6. I-75 was a parking lot, and so was the back-road bypass we tried. Apparently the holiday weekend traffic has everything slammed, as even our Georgia hotel is completely full.

But the baby is beautiful so it was well worth the hassle.

Don't forget to speed up when you drive thru Waldo, so you can contribute to their municipal fund.

Yesterday, I drove from Atlanta to visit my daughter who lives in Niceville. Northbound, it seemed busy, but southbound wasn’t busy at all.

Sunrise from the hotel window:

Waldo got rid of their police department a few years ago. It’s Lawtey that’s the problem now.
They'd all be less of a problem is states would mandate speeding <10 over $5 and no points, and if none of the fine money every went to the locals.

My first ticket, at 16, was while I was moving furniture for a friend's family. Speed limit went from 55 to 30 in one of those little towns along the Ohio river, clocked me at 35 and reminded me of what a menace to society I was. Little towns with no real crime so they make it up.

This morning, ran the Lucky Leprechaun 5K in Ft. Walton Beach with my eldest daughter, we then ate entirely too much breakfast at Asiago's, also in Ft. Walton Beach. Bought running shoes for both of us, then we took a two hour sailing lesson in a J/80 at Mid Bay Sailing in Niceville.

Flew Thursday helping one of our pilots get accustomed to. Modern Garmin panel and got the best feedback I’ve had in a long time. Went to Junction today to scout a kayak trip.

Got a call from the fire alarm company that they got an alert at the shop. Remembered I put a battery charger on something so I was worried I burnt the place down. Dropped what I was doing and hustled the 5 miles to the shop looking for smoke. Just a ground fault in the system from all the rain

I also watched the dog watch me. IMG_3401.jpeg

Did dirtbike maintenance. In the garage, while the storms raged outside. And that, my friends, required beer.

Now I'm thinking about putting some beer in a backpack and riding said dirtbike to the neighbor's house. All private dirt road, not real roads.

That's a nope. It's dropped 13 degrees since I posted that. I'm staying inside while it goes from 61° to 28°.

Voted.

Vote early, vote often, I always say.
A phrase made popular by Al Capone and Chicago organized crime. Even though the phrase been around long before then, they took it up a notch by not requiring one to actually be living to adhere to the principle.

Enjoyed (sarcasm) another day of a march zero visibility blizzard morning with heavy drifting of hard snow. Got my lifted 1 ton pickup stuck for the first time ever (since I bought it in 2009) heading to the farm. A long stretch of 2’ drift turned into a a long stretch of 4’ drift and was just hard enough that rather than ramming through it as usual it rode up just enough that when it came to a stop and I started backing up to hit it again it dropped, high centered and knocked off my serpentine belt in the process. Thankfully a road grader with a vee plow came along about an hour later, “broke protocol”, pulled me out, and I was able to use a crow bar I had in the truck to get the belt back on… that was the start of a very long day.

US 301 between Ocala and Jacksonville Florida. Notorious speed trap back in the day.

Yep. South of Starke and west of Keystone Heights. Lawtey is also on 301, north of Starke. Both have a well-earned reputation as speed traps, though it’s no longer the case for Waldo. Waldo got rid of its corrupt police department about 10 years ago, but Lawtey still has cops patrolling 301, and a speed camera near its only traffic light.

Both used the same trick, which was a sudden drop in speed limit from 65 to 45, with Barney Fife hiding behind a barn about 10 feet past the sign. They got me in 2008.

Yep, and without warning signs. Waldo was the worst, as they reduced it to 45, then went up again for about a mile, then dropped it to 45 again. You'd think you were out of it and speed up, only to get nailed by the second 45 zone.

There were lots of complaints, and AAA erected billboards just outside of town to warn motorists. By the early 2000s, Waldo and Lawtey were the only two places in the country that AAA identified as speed traps.

About 10 years ago, there were state investigations and Waldo's cops were found to be acting illegally. https://www.news4jax.com/news/2014/10/01/city-council-disbands-waldo-police-department/ The Waldo department was closed down, and the town now just uses the county sheriff's dept for law enforcement. Lawtey no longer has the AAA designation, but I still see cops there regularly and they have a speed camera.

Both now step the speed down, 65-55-45, with warning signs ahead of the speed zones.

BTW, don't ever run from one of Lawtey's cops. They're too fat to chase you, so they'll just shoot you. https://www.lawteypolice.org/about.html
