What did you do today?

How is the pain so far? Hopefully manageable.

Fine. Lots of meds and whatever they gave me for the surgery lasts for a day and a half. I had to walk up and down stairs before they let me be released so it works but I’m sure there will be a couple weeks of iffy times and PT. We got 29” os snow so no need to go anywhere.

Also have a bunch of courseware and videos for the new (to me) SR22 to do so it won’t be wasted time.

I plugged my own tire out of stubbornness and spite after picking up a self-tapping screw. Les Schwab wouldn't do it for me because there is cord showing on the instep and they really wanted to sell me a set of 4 tires. They can't get the tires for 10 days. Costco can't get em for 7. Ordered at Costco. Wanted to do a roadtrip on Thursday and didn't want to do it with a nailed tire.

Always wondered how these weird things work. So far, so good. Will see if I regret putting 1500 miles on it in the snow in a few days :D

You were due.

Heh, fair. I don't mind EV tire drama. It's part of the deal. Actually people should talk more about tire drama when they extoll EV virtues :)

I mind that nobody seems to stock tires in the correct sizes for either of our EVs. We're not in the sticks. There is no reason for a tire to take a week to 10 days to arrive anywhere on this planet, much less virtue-signalled EV mecca here. It's becoming painful.

But now I know how to use a tire reamer and self-vulcanizing plug inserter doodad. I've always wondered how those things work. Actually I still wonder, but now I at least recognize it's not snake oil. :)

I commend you for learning a new skill, but i wouldn't drive 15 miles on that tire, much less 1500...

I plug all of my own tires, many many over my lifetime. I prefer the self vulcanizing Safety Seal tire worms, better quality and they don’t need the almost always dried out tube of glue to work. Every plugged tire has run to the wear bars no issues.

Eh, they’re still above the wear bars. Barely.

EDIT: Redacted. Yeah, steel belts showing on the far left side. That tire is toast.

I wouldn't want to go much over 15 miles on that tire, and it looks like even brand new it would be terrifying in the snow.

I would figure out how many miles are on those tires. I would make a plan to begin looking for replacement tires 10k miles sooner on this next set. My grandfather ran a tire shop my entire life, until he retired. He would kick my ass if I even thought about driving on that tire.

I'd rent a Toyota Corolla for the trip, maybe a Hyundai. That's not too expensive. Beats wishing you had while they are cutting you out of your overturned car, ya know?

Today I was cold. Same thing yesterday. Likely tomorrow. Thursday - I'll be really really really cold for a time.

Not on the inside edge. Looks like they're through a layer of the steel belts.
I had an old BMW in high school where the rear tires where on steel belts for a time. That was the most fun I've ever had in a car. On a clear dry day, I took every corner sideways.

40k. EV rear tires have a rough life with regen braking. I also need to figure out why that one wore the inner shoulder so thoroughly.

Really, though, cut out of my overturned car? c'mon dude, I'm not a Karen in a 1990 Ford Explorer with a purse dog in my lap. A rented hyundai is firmly in "Don't you put that evil on me Ricky Bobby" territory. :P I have a Subaru Outback I am trying to not take up the hill. Sigh.

Scared the holy ^&%$^ outta myself this morning.

At my moms house, I was going to pour 20 pounds of pellets into the 5 gallon bucket. As I picked up the 40 pound bag, I lost my balance. As I was falling forward, I tripped over the bucket. While I am trying to get my feet back under me, I am looking at the spot on the cement floor where I am about to plant my face. I am still recovering from the fall last April and was not wanting another head injury. So I dropped the end of the bag in my right hand and with my left hand I swung the bag backwards. That was enough to change my center of gravity and get my feet back under me.

I had to sit down and take a break for a few minutes. But I eventually did get the pellets into the bucket and into the stove.

I am too young to be this old...

Yeah, some sort alignment might be needed. How many miles on the vehicle? Original tires? I'm just saying, I would not drive that vehicle again, unless it was very carefully and straight to the shop will be installing new tires.

I got 42k out of my OEM tire on my truck. They never showed any wire, but they were thoroughly worn out. I got 82k out of the next set, a set of Sumitomo Encounter AT. It helps that we no longer live in the mountains and roads in this area are in pretty good shape. Hopefully you can find a set that lasts longer and perform well.

Did you do that laugh people make when they almost die doing something seemingly benign?

Glad you were able to avert catastrophe.

:) I used to sometimes run tires down to the steel when I was a teenager. I wouldn't do it now.

We may need to chip in and get you a helmet. Not for flying, but for walking around outdoors... :)

why would tire wear be any different with regen braking?

I assume the see-saw of city driving wears them differently, but I dunno. I thought this was a known thing. We're on EV 3 and 4, and they have ALL worn the rear tires appx twice as fast as the fronts. Our Leaf did it too, although dramatically less so (weaker regen)

It's doubly irritating when they're staggered so you can't rotate the tires across axles. both i3s and my current do this :/

I think it's more to do with the weight. Our Pacifica Hybrid wears tires much faster than our previous gas vans did. At least they are all the same size so I can rotate them and they all wear out at the same time. It also seems like the factory tires last about half as long as the replacements. My conspiracy theory is that the tire companies provide cheaper, crappier tires to the OEM's.

Pass the tin foil. :D The BMW i3 only has ONE compatible tire maker in the US, Bridgestone, and their junk Ecopias are made of discarded twix wrappers.

I dunno why nobody will bring any other tire makes from Europe, but I have guesses. I've thought about bringing a set of Michelins back from my travels to England. Not sure how the airline would enjoy that.

I have sworn off Michelin car tires. That was original equipment on our first two Pacifica's, and in addition to being worn out in 20K miles, they were so badly weather cracked after a year that they probably should've been replaced for that.

Their tractor and semi tires are second to none, but I can't afford them.

I no longer own a house. On the plus side, I do have a trust that owns the house we live in... Yeah, we were overdue for wills, and did the whole nine yards.

a more mundane activity today: successfully file federal and state tax returns for 2025.

The advantage of not having a lot of money makes the returns really simple.
