I am getting close to my 70s and I think I may need some help on choosing one of these new ED medications. What has been your experience with either one and what possible effects on flying. Thanks

Six of one, a half dozen of the other. They can both rarely cause some visual problems which I believe are almost always temporary. Cialis has a much longer half life so the wait before flying is much longer (a week?). Viagra has a half life of around 4 hours so a day wait should be OK but I am sure the FAA has it's own rules so wait for Dr. Bruce. What ever you do make sure that you do not get any nitroglycerin for a while after taking either of these meds. I saw a guy who had a cardiac arrest about 5 days after taking Cilias and the ER doc gave him some intravenous nitroglycerin which resulted in a dangerously low BP for a day or two. The guy was intubated when they got him so he could not talk and I guess his wife or girlfriend did not know or was too embarrassed to notify the EMTs.

Thanks for the info Gary. I also thought about the hydraulic option. The only drawback I heard that in some instances when flying at high altitudes you get involuntary erections which can be uncomfortable and embarrasing. I guess you could relieve the hydraulic pressure by pressing some valve. Wonder if these things comes with an over pressure relief valve. I would not want a penis burst reported on the NTSB report.:yikes:

The hangover is the worst part. You're supposed to wait 12 hours IIRC between taking it and flying, but Cialis stays in your system for up to 72 hours, so keep that in mind.

And enjoy being 20 again :)

Stupid question for you boner pill guys, but will either of these temporarily lower blood pressure significantly?

Secondly, if you have zero need for these to begin with, could the above mentioned use be detrimental? (e.g. causing hard oak to become green willow over time?)

Are these reportable medications?

Nope.

Nope.

You probably know where I'm going with this. Thinking this through though, it would be HELLA embarrasing to have an uncontrollable, unretractable priapism in the AME's office.

Maybe that's a bad idea.

I took one and it gave me a headache. Nothing happened. He took one and it was "weird" but not that different than normal. Things just felt different and such. Still functional as always. Not sure about the long term, that was a random night following a wedding years ago where a friend oddly said to us "do you want some Viagra" and we said "um - sure????" We saved it and in fact now that I think back - it might have been a generic if there is such a thing. I know the guy who gave it to us but I was concerned so I used that drug website to identify the pill before taking it.

I wonder if they come out with a female version if the FAA will ban it or make it reportable. That would suck.

It's called the funky cold Medina (reference Tone Loc). Be careful with that stuff though.

OMG it was YEARS ago and I will NOT do anything stupid now that I'm a pilot. I would hate to risk my ability to fly an aircraft for one night of fun.

Women can have sexual " hightenness" after taking viagra and the like. It has to do with increasing blood flow in the genital area. Without getting personal  if you did not notice a difference then you might not need it to begin with. You must be "enjoying life". Don't answer that! :wonderwoman: ;)

No, it does not normally lower systemic blood pressure significantly. It can lower the pressure in the lungs for those with high blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension).

I'm a regular poster but I'm going unregistered because this is just a little too personal to couple with my username.

I use Viagra. Haven't tried anything else because Viagra works great. If you are going to try it, start with the smallest dose. I cut a 100mg tablet in quarters and take 25mg. At that dosage, it works fine, the side effects are minimal, and the cost is reasonable.

I took 100mg once and the side effects were brutal. My vision had a very weird blue tint, my auditory perception was greatly enhanced, and just a general spaciness for 3-4 hours afterwords. As to the auditory effect, my wife and I went shopping a couple of hours after and I remember hearing people's conversations clearly 50' feet away in a noisy store. I would have been in no condition to fly an airplane. I read somewhere that you should wait 5 hours before flying after taking it. I think that is optimistic.

I only use it at night as that's when my wife is generally in the mood for sex. The only downside there is occasionally waking up in the middle of the night with an erection.

It takes about 1/2 hour for it to kick in. You can tell by your nose getting slightly congested.

Gary's right that in most it doesn't lower BP significantly. However, is is "negatively inotropic" meaning that the muscle doesn't squeeze as hard. Add Topical Minoxidil for hair maintainence (which is a vasodilator), and you're going down.....down....to the ground.

Add venous vasodilation (Nitrates) which lowers the ventricular filling pressure, and you have big instant troubles. Dehydration will do the same thing.

FAA is okay with it as nitrates are verboten. But if you get dizzy and have to get to an ER expect a treadmill, a holter and a cardiac echo, with an analysis by the cardiologist.

Lastly, not to make too much fun- but there are six completely blind (retinally) buys for whom Viagra made it so. How do we know? One of them had transient blindness for about six hours after his (?) 4th dose, and then took it again. This time it wasn't transient.

Cialis- don't know, but it's in the same group of medications and there isn't any reason why it should be any better.....but since it's long lasting, the lack of blood supply to the retinas would be a bigger issue during the longer period.....

I mentioned the low BP problem from drug interactions in post #2. The problem with nitrates is that even if you do not have a prescription for one, many Emergency Medicine docs have a hair trigger for giving nitrates for any type of chest pain considered suspicious for cardiac ischemia. That can be a real problem if they are unaware of the Viagra or Cialis. As Dr. Bruce mentioned other drugs can also react causing a very low BP including alpha blockers, formerly used for hypertension but now used primarily for prostate problems. Pharmacies screen for these interactions.

So what was the deal with Air Forces, IIRC I read Israeli specifically, giving Viagra to pilots to help with visual acuity especially at night?:dunno:

Does reducing the dosage of Cialis or Viagra, say cutting the pill in half, reduce the time you must self ground?

I have always maintained... we guys have two heads, but only enough blood supply for one of them to be fully functional at any given time.

Correct, and my upper one resultantly has the mental capacity of a hamster 95% of the time.

Many people who have to emphatically, and publicly state that they have certain physical capabilities are often compensating because they don't and/or they can't find anyone that will actually participate in this endeavor. :D

Alas, it's the latter, not the former.
