Unaccommodating instructor during a firefighting operation

:eek::eek:
I think a Warrior would have been ok on either runway, lol.

Even with a slight tailwind it may be a good lesson to students on the effects.

CFI, the active runway is 34, we are not approving landings on 16.

If you are not capable of teaching your student to land with the current wind, use another airport.

Teach your student to yield to fire vehicles, in the air or on the ground.

So switch to 16, fit in with the flow, and give the student a great opportunity to experience tailwind landings and takeoffs. It was only an eight-knot wind and it’s a two-mile runway. A CFI should be capable and comfortable with that. I realize that might leave them with only 9,000 feet of room if they float, but it’s doable. Or just say “hey, this is a chance to do some extra ground and talk about the no-go decision.”

And then the talking down to the Calfire pilot - “I’m teaching him how to land properly.”

The flight school ownerks response was pretty poor, too. Someone gave him a bad review for that, so the owner responded by saying he knew the reviewer was active duty Air Force, and was notifying his CO.

Yeah. That cfi will be a lot of fun for the captains to deal with when she eventually moves on.

At the legacy carriers it’s very rare to have those educational moments but the hiring tempo in 21-24 created some opportunities.

I had a fun conversation a couple years ago about “personal minimums.”

When I told him his minimums now matched the approach plate it was kinda quiet lol.

An 8 knot tailwind? Please. Keep er on the ground if you can't help em out with all that's going on.

Forget landing with a tailwind, she should have just GTFO. I think I met her brother. He was teaching his students to fly 747 patterns in a Cessna and complained about a glider "cutting him off" before he buzzed everyone on the runway.

Bozo! "I am trying to teach my students to land normally!" She would have been doing them a service teaching downwind landings that day.

Yeah, that's what surprised me also. If your student can't handle a tailwind landing, that's fine. But having the legal right to do pattern work doesn't mean you have the moral right to do so. Go somewhere else and do stall recoveries or slow flight when the water bombers are around.

I particularly liked when she said that she would always accommodate the tankers... After refusing to accommodate the tankers. :mad2:

And the next time firefighters need to use this runway, there might well be a pop-up TFR closing the airport to all traffic not engaged in firefighting operations. Play nice or you'll be sent away.
That's likely what they were trying to avoid doing with the assumption everyone there had common sense. Wouldn't surprise me if they resort to that, but the reality is the CFI in the video will probably be flying for the majors in the next year or two, god forbid.

Saw this on YouTube and couldn't believe what I was hearing. The incident has surely created an online uproar.

Around here it’s ag planes that use whatever rwy is most convenient to where they are spraying and refueling/refilling. And they don’t seem to usually be on CTAF, either. These tankers were doing all they could to communicate.

There were a lot of teaching moments for that CFI.

When radio transmissions sound immature, and lack experience or confidence to demonstrate flexibility, remember …
‘if you’re talking too much, you’re losing’

Her attitude probably explains why she is no longer employed as an engineer. I recently flew to MCC and as I was in the proper traffic pattern an airplane came in hot transmitting "our receive radio doesn't work" over and over again. That aircraft was not even in the proper traffic pattern and just swooped in and landed. Hearing this now I believe the voices are one and the same...

I had no problems with either operations until they all opened their mouths. Not that I would have done what the Warrior did. My only nit is she could have been proactive and given a 360 or two in the pattern to allow the CalFire guys out of there quicker (like the Citation did), and communicated her intentions. Granted the when the CalFire guys announced holding short, they could have asked to see if they could scoot out of there in front of the Warrior. No need to change runways for anyone. If the CFI doesn't want to teach tailwind landings at that point in the student's journey, they don't have to. Once everyone opened their mouths it turned quite cringy.

Why can't people just communicate openly and clearly? "Hey Warrior, I've got two CalFires that need to blast out of here to go save some stuff - any chance you can run a few 360s on downwind to give us room?" Instead - everyone did what they do best - bashed each other. Maybe the Warrior didn't think their flight wasn't so urgent. I mean, why didn't the two planes just take the runway and take off? The Warrior would have had to give way, right? ¯\\(ツ)/¯

Yeah, I read this thread before watching the video. While it was pretty bad, I was expecting a lot worse.

Seems that was pretty clear.

Suppose it didn't.

Flying with a "fill-in" instructor one day, as my guy was still out on a X-country... he got into it with ATC after I missed a call while flying an approach...we were on an IFR plan... my bad and I owned it, but noooooo, he couldn't let it go... the end result was he (we) was given the dreaded "copy this number.."

When we got on the ground and he said, "better hurry up call them before you get in more trouble.." I called and they asked to speak to the other pilot.. told him to call, an never knew what happened after that, nor did I care.. Never flew with him again, and told my regular guy to that we'll skip the lesson than go through that again... he chuckled and said "one more happy student brought to you by _____"

As for the gal in that video..... well, there are words for that, that I prefer not share here.

So instead of teaching her student that sometimes you have to deviate from your plan, maybe have the student learn sometime there are other priorities, or teach a student to land with a tailwind she wanted to stick to the textbook. She is not a good CFI.

Heck, she’s not even a good pilot. Terrible judgment and ADM.

I listened to about half of it. To me is sounded like not one event, but that she was doing pattern work while at the same airport a group of tankers were flying in a loop between the airport and the fire to get water. Even if they were going in the same direction, any normal person would have either left or stayed on the ground. Again, just my view, but that didn't sound like just poor decision making, it sounded aggressive on her part.

Some interesting comments/points in the Blancolirio video on this re. the instructor's flight school owner Cal-Fire Kerfuffle
The end of that was.... interesting. Owner says pitch doesn't control airspeed.

@Crashnburn, you still using aerosphere? you may want to switch flight schools again of this is what the owner of the flight school is making his cfi's teach.

The majority of the CFI's radio calls were incorrect, but she wants to teach things "properly" :mad2:
