True Confessions - Share your shame

I like spam.
The canned pork product, and the song.
Not so much the song but the product I completely agree! The vacuum packaged spam singles are strategically stashed everywhere I spend lots of time, in my home, in the glove box of my truck, in one desk drawer at work, it’s a great quick snack with a shelf life of years and no preparation needed to eat it. Give me spam over a candy bar or chips every time!

It wasn’t me but I was equally responsible- I was passenger on my buddy’s Arrow while taxiing from his tie down to the fuel pump. As we were going along, we both heard a rattling noise but couldn’t figure out what it was. As we passed a hangar near the pumps, someone started running towards us while waving their arms. We ignored him and came to a stop in front of the fuel pump. I got out and took one look and my heart sank. Firmly attached to the nose gear was the tow bar.

I hunted since the 1990s and slowed then eventually stopped a few years ago because of the killing part. [/USER]
Become a wildlife photographer? All of the hunting, bugs, and discomfort, but the "shot" you take only makes the animal look fabulous.

I spent the better part of pheasant season one year flying groups to South Dakota twice a week. I’m not a hunter, and I had plenty to keep me busy otherwise, but the last few trips I donned orange and went out with the guys just to enjoy the countryside. I finally took my DSLR with me and shot a ton of pictures, some of them not too bad, IMO. Uploaded them to Photobucket or someplace, gave the owner a link to pass along to the hunters from those trips.

I'm kind of with Bryan on this one. If there's something unusual (like the jet-powered glider) or a night airshow or some very rare airplane, I'm interested. But if it's just another aerobatic pilot doing aerobatic pilot things, I'm just not interested. They all look the same to me.

I'm quite sure this is because I've seen a lot of performances, and also I'm not interested in aerobatics. Certainly the pilots are amazing, no doubt about that. And somebody who DOES fly aerobatics can certainly watch a performance with a much keener eye for details that would make it interesting for them. But for me, no.

And the Blues and Thunderbirds I have seen so many times (through my time in the AF) that I'm really not interested.in them either.
Exactly the same here. I think airshows are generally for genpop wherever the airshow takes place. Aviation people tend to go to airshows to talk with other aviators and see the hardware, not to see extreme aerobatics or whatever. Even the warbird shows are old-hat for me. I've seen it all before, probably 100x.

Sometimes stopping on the taxiways of small uncontrolled fields at night to take a leak. With the proliferation of surveillance cameras the bushes and backsides of hangers don't feel as secluded as they once were.

My right breaks are not as nice as my lefts.

Nauga,
over the upwind numbers

I've never done a right break or a left break.

I've never even been tempted to do either one.

Randy Zahn (author of 'Pink Team' - about Loach / Cobra AirCav teams in VN) has a story about a fellow trainee at Fort Wolters who landed his TH-55 on a berm and stepped out to pee. And there, watched the little Osage, engine still running, slide down the slope into the Marsh Mallows.

They're also extremely canned in the name of safety and repeatability. After you've seen the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds two or three times in the last decade the show isn't that interesting anymore.
Too bad they don't introduce new routines (or a different order) for each airshow season.

The fake narratives for some performances are cringeworthy - like the guy with the lit-up VariEze (I think) at the OSH night show, who has the story of the craft running out of energy and such.
Also, why do we need to drown the sound of the engines with terrible music and loud commentators that sound like self-appointed idiots?

I've always wanted one of the airshows at oshkosh to be free of announcers, music, fireworks, etc. Just the visual and the sound of the airplanes.

Instead of "From your left, here comes the beautiful Mustang, powered by a Packard Merlin engine with its beautiful roar. Just listen to the sound of that engine. Wow, that's the sound of freedom. Now in WWII..."

Um, when was I supposed to listen to the Merlin?

Count me as someone who HATES the stupid sound track at airshows. Lose the useless moronic DJ and let us listen to the airplanes.

OMG, It’s all fun and games until someone says this. This is a cry for help. Prolly gonna have to initiate an intervention. One of our own is in serious trouble….

I generally don't pay a lot of attention to the airshows at Oshkosh, at least not the aerobatics. Warbirds are OK, I do love seeing and hearing them. And seeing F22/F35 do crazy stuff is cool as hell, but I've only seen it a couple of times so it's still new. I did make a note to take earplugs though. But seeing the biplane with a jet strapped under it or one of the people who tries their best to find the max G of a rock... I appreciate the fact that they have amazing skills, but it's just not my thing.

Flying a plane or even a tailwheel airplane isn't nearly as hard as the people on POA try to make you think it is. In a few hours just about anyone can learn enough to solo one. They did it all the time back in the day.

Flying good on the other hand...

I have never been, have less than zero desire to, and will probably never, go to Airventure. I don't need my tent fallen into and ****ed on by drunk people from PoA and their guests.

Almost 100-years ago, a Piper salesman would land a new Cub in a field and teach a high-school jock (someone with good coordination) how to fly it in a few hours.

Lotsa stuff they didn't have to do then that you do now. But little powered gliders like Cubs are not difficult to fly.

The Red Arrows is the only display team that I've seen who do not use music for their display performance. The announcer will describe the next maneuver while the aircraft are regrouping, and be quiet as the maneuver happens.

Ed, you are at an age where you get on Airbnb.com and rent a house for the weekend. Also a car. I would never go back to camping for the reason you describe. I am constantly ****ing and falling into peoples' tents.
You should go but stay in Appleton and have dinner at Fox River Brewing and enjoy dining on the river and drive in a car with AC to see airventure. Its like rough river actually.

that is most excellent.

I giggled like a little girl when the cast came off.

I cried like a little girl when the Dr tried to bend my thumb...

Bacon smells horrifically wrong to me.
We cook ours in a sheet pan on the grill, keeps the cooktop clean and the house not smelling of bacon grease.

About that bacon thing, I don't really like it by itself. It adds something to a salad, and on the rare occasion that we cook beef tenderloin. wrapping it in bacon and sauteing it add some much needed flavor to a rather bland piece of beef.

I like Arby's, too, and am not ashamed to admit it.

I was in line at Arby's behind a couple of guys who were ordering about 15 sandwiches. Apparently the Albany Arby's is the closest one to Montreal. They were down here for work and returning with sandwiches for their friends. At normal driving speeds it's about 3.5 hours to Montreal. I didn't ask them if they liked the Simpsons.

Like a rusty gate hinge.

Broke my scaphoid in my wrist. Cast past elbow for 2 months. My elbow needed some penetrating lube when the cast came off.

The chances of that happening are sufficiently close to zero... Most of us are too old to be in tents. ;) And if we're in tents, it's because we're at 6Y9, where we're still more than happy to get drunk and **** on your tent/cabin/car/airplane. :p

But, nobody will even notice you aren't there. It's the busiest airport in the world and the third largest city in Wisconsin that week.

Except it did happen when my parents were there. So, not close to zero. I will not out who it was, but it did actually happen.

I'd be fine with just the occasional aircraft identification or point out for new folks (or when I can't tell what I'm looking at) and then shut up. But it's just a constant barrage of blather and music. I feel like I need earplugs for that and not for the airplane noises.

Oh, and why DON'T the Blues or Thunderbirds change up their routine?

Oh, and why DON'T the Blues or Thunderbirds change up their routine?
There's a lot of behind the scenes effort put into developing the routines tht you don't see and seldom hear about. Flow, timing, fuel management, safety, etc all get worked out far in advance of any show. Once the routines are set, there's a tremendous amount of work in practicing until the teams can fly them under a variety of conditions. There are already contingencies for things like weather so some things may change from time to time. Adding additional maneuvers or changing routines more just adds more time and cost to what is already an extremely intense and somewhat expensive schedule. There's always a wholesale show update when the platform changes and there are tweaks between seasons to improve things, but you're not going to see a wide variety of stuff that changes from show to show just to mix things up.

Platform changes? The Thunderbirds have been using the F-16 for 42 years! There are people who were born after they started using it, who grew up, joined the military, and are retired now.

Also, why do we need to drown the sound of the engines with terrible music and loud commentators that sound like self-appointed idiots?
This. There are a few announcers who need to retire, Danny Clisham being at the top of the list. Corsairs flying by Oshkosh and he’s talking over them, telling the crowd how they were featured i n Baa Baa Black Sheep, blathering on to include the years it was on TV and I think even what network.

Less is more when it comes to airshow announcing. I’ll scream if I hear one more time why there’s a gap between the radiator scoop and belly on a P-51, or when an announcer feels compelled to tell us that a plane climbing vertically right in front of us is climbing vertically.

I stopped eating bacon close to two years ago for health reasons (sodium, saturated fat). I had some a few weeks ago and actually didn’t really like it that much.

I lost my taste for beer, too. I’ll have an occasional Shiner Bock or something similar, but other than a glass of wine (California pinot or cab, preferably) maybe once a week, I pretty much lost the taste for anything with alcohol.

I read # as pound and not hashtag until at least 2014. Had no idea what a hashtag was. Still don't.

Have you tried bacon-wrapped bacon?

And the used the downtime as a result of airshow cancellations in 2020 to revamp the show.
It's not a trivial task, nor is training and maintaining proficiency in between intensive tour schedules.

Nauga,
who would rather watch a TAC demo

Cryptocurrencies confuse me... I own it, but it doesn't technically exist tangibly. Does that mean I don't really own it....
