True Confessions - Share your shame

I actually don’t mind the smell of skunks.
Same here. Our first house had a crawl space, no basement, and we had a family of skunks living in the crawl space. They didn't bother us and we didn't bother them. Though my wife almost picked one up once thinking our black and white cat had gotten out...

I can't judge though. I like the smell of jet exhaust. There is just something about the smell of burnt kerosene that makes me not entirely upset to be stuck behind a jet idling on the ramp.
Not me! 100LL piston exhaust, fine, but kerosene, no. You haven't lived until you've spent a 100° morning on the flight line at China Lake near where the jets run up after spending the previous night drinking with a bunch of Navy chiefs... :rolleyes2:

I grew up near SFO and when the wind was blowing from the north, I could smell the jet exhaust. I didn't mind it, either, and I even didn't mind the noise of the engines, which were pointed at the house when the jets too, off to the north. To this day, sleeping near a busy airport is soothing to me.

In light of the coming holiday, I thought of a new one.

I really don't care for firework shows.

Our town always has an epic firework show for the 4th of July. It often goes 20-30 minutes of continuous booms, oohs, and aahs. And I'm bored after the first couple minutes.

That makes at least 2 of us.

My first trip to China Lake was 1989 and it really resembled some sort of 1960's military base where everything was in the process of answering "can we?" do something with a weapon. Made a lot of trips back over the following years and worked some neat projects but decided that actually being stationed there wasn't for me. I was much more a Whidbey guy!

Take @mandm ‘s dogs with you. It’ll add a whole new level to the show.

Airshows where the performer is just throwing his/her overpowered plane around the sky hold no interest for me.

And totally unrelated but shameful - I know next to nothing about military ranks.

I really don't care for firework shows.
Last year they did one of those drone shows here. I got tired of it when it started. No big booms, no brightly colored flashes and no embers floating into the crowd. A real snooze fest.

certainly fireworks from the air (above) isn't a thrill.

Much more fun when you encounter some mischievous kids putting on their own show.

Let’s play “Never Have I Ever”, that was always a fun game.
Is your shameful confession that you find that game fun? ;)

Probably due to my complete lack of desire to be at parties, never have I ever played "Never Have I Ever".

I confess that I've never even heard of "Never Have I Ever"

If you're close enough to hear them over the sound of the engine (and feel the thump in the floor) they'll give you quite the thrill.

Warbirds do nothing for me. I can only identify a few, and I'm never impressed when I see them.

I get tipped in beer a lot, but don't drink alcohol. I can't stand the taste of coffee, but own a coffee shop.

I'm ambivalent to firework shows. The neighbors who launch fireworks until 2 AM gripe my ass. I could sleep through it, but our dogs go bananas. Also, when our son was tiny, they kept him up, which was mucho fun. I think that was the year that "we had a talk".

It was a cold winter night a few years ago. I had a student that needed a few more hours of dual at night & it was 19 degrees outside. The line crew had left the Skyhawk outside at the tie downs as requested. My student did a pre-flight with his flashlight & the airplane started after much priming. We were happy to get the engine running so lights & heat could be turned on. I usually do a quick walk around myself but in the cold wind I skipped my usual walk around. I flew this airplane regularly & knew it. The tower was closed se we proceeded to taxi except the airplane wouldn't budge. WHEEL CHOCKS! I usually make the student shut down, climb out, remove chocks & start over. Not this night. I told the student "I have control" & I pushed in enough throttle to jump the chocks. They were only on the pilots side. After we were free from the chocks I told him to never do that because it wasn't safe. I've felt guilty ever since.

I'm the same way with all planes. Outside of a few, I often have to punch in the N-Number to see what it is. Heck even once I met up with @JoeSelch for lunch and as we were leaving I was checking out a plane that was at the fuel pumps a hundred feet away or so, and didn't recognize it until I got right up to it. It was a Comanche. I caught some grief for that one.

The Oshkosh night airshow ones have kind of ruined all the other ones for me. Especially last year, where they had oodles of fireworks set to music AND airplanes flying and shooting fireworks, AND drones, AND pyro, including all at the same time sometimes. A fun sensory overload!

Yep. It needs all the other stuff listed above. When they were messing around with the drones on other nights it was a fun thing to watch while drinking and yakking about airplanes but it was nothing more than a minor fun distraction. "Oh look at the fighter in the sky."

I finally figured out how it should be done last year. One suburb not too far away does theirs on a lake. If you circle low enough and close enough and get both the fireworks and their reflection off the lake it's cool. Sorry for the poor quality, these are video screen captures:

Sounds like a bad morning at Oshkosh, although rarely that hot

A good one going around. Sound is NSFW.

"We still don't know how to counter this ingenious tactic of hiding behind trees."

Fast forward about 150 years, substitute trenches for trees, and they STILL hadn't figured it out. See Somme, battle of.

I am not a CFI but Ihave done that.
