I like me some mixed nuts. I rarely buy them. A couple days ago was probably the second time since six months ago. Yes, the occasionally end up in the workplace breakroom but that is a separate rant all in itself. These are for home use.

I'm staring at the row of mixed nut cans. Cans. Maybe that was my first mistake. One is labeled "Mixed Nuts" and it costs $13.99. The other is labeled "Mixed Nuts" by the same brand, and it might have had "Premium" on it I'm not sure, but it cost $17.99. The ingredients are the same - peanuts, cashews, almonds, pecans and Brazil nuts. One might have had some sort of vinegar the other didn't. I remember buying a can six months ago and I was pretty happy with it, but I don't remember which option I selected or why.

Well, I'm 3/4 down - enough so I can see the entire contents. It was mostly peanuts and cashews, and some almonds. There were a total of maybe five or six pecans. Five I think. And only one, single Brazil nut, IN THE ENTIRE FREAKIN' CAN!

Yes, I should have opted for a clear bottle, but the store did not have clear bottles of mixed nuts. They had clear bottles of peanuts, and almonds, and cashews, and pecans, but who cares. You know what you're getting. Back in the bulk/organic nut section they had some plastic tubs of Brazil nuts. I like Brazil nuts. But not alone, I like them in a mix, with pecans, and walnuts, and almonds, and a few peanuts and cashews thrown in are fine. It's not that I don't like cashews, they are just my least favorite nut*.

I'm going to assume that last time, I opted for the $17.99 can on the basis that the good to lame ratio was better than on the $13.99 can, but now I'm not even sure if I want to risk that huge amount of cash on an unknown.

*Yes I am aware that peanuts are legumes.

So what else is new. That has griped me for 50 years. "mixed nuts" means 90% peanuts. And peanuts aren't even nuts. They are legumes.
Just because an ingredient list includes a dozen nuts that doesn't mean they are in equal proportion. Several grocery stores have bulk dispensers where you can see what you are getting and dispense as many as you want. That's how I get my mixed nuts. Sometimes I get a batch that includes dark chocolate.

edit: I failed to see where you acknowledged that peanuts aren't nuts.

Pistachios, pecans, almonds, and cashews are drupe seeds. Even Brazil Nuts are seeds not nuts.

I have a 60yo Pecan tree at my airport. You can come by and pick all you want for free. In past years, it has yielded more than 300Lbs of nuts.

I buy unsalted mixed nuts at Costco and Sam’s. No peanuts. One kind has Brazil nuts, a couple others don’t. I prefer the kind with them.

Have you bought sardines lately? I have always liked eating them (in spurts, I would eat a lot of them for a month or so then not have any for a year or more, then get a craving..like a seasonal food). The last few I bought I couldn’t even eat. They used to be fish, about 4 or five well trimmed and cleaned would fill a can. Now they are like minnows, half still have guts inside them…I tried different brands. From what I have seen it seems to be across the board throughout.

The snack station at work has mixed nuts. This is me eating from there:

From Google AI
Botanically, a true nut is a dry, single-seeded fruit with a hard, woody shell that does not split open at maturity. Only a few commonly eaten "nuts" meet this definition, including hazelnuts, chestnuts, acorns, and beechnuts. Most "culinary nuts" are actually drupes or legumes.

So you are ranting about mixed Drupes and Legumes, get it right dude :)

Pecan is a true tree nut, in the family of Hickory trees. I have at least 100Lbs of nuts on the ground in my yard right now. If the price weren't so damn low for Pecans I'd have it harvested. Pecan also makes for fine firewood split and dried.

It is also excellent to use in a smoker.

A pecan is technically classified as a drupe, which is a type of fruit that has a fleshy outer layer surrounding a hard shell or pit that contains the seed. In the case of pecans, the edible part we consume is the seed inside the shell.

I haven’t had anything to do with mixed nuts since my last videocon just before I retired.

You ARE a nut sac
Remember who you are talking to, bro
Pistachios, pecans, almonds, and cashews are drupe seeds. Even Brazil Nuts are seeds not nuts.
Ah whatever. Common usage of the language.
So we're just gonna not talk about this part??
I don't have a basis for comparison, so, no, not at this time.
Aldi sells a mixed nuts without any peanuts in it.

Oh I don't mind peanuts. Actually cashews are what I would eliminate, if I was to eliminate one. And walnuts would be nice to the mix as well.

Where to chestnuts fall? By the way, that is an entire separate rant. I'm too lazy to necroquote right now.

I'm just happy to find a thread where the nuts are so clearly defined.

Specific to the original post, I gave up on mixed a long time ago. My favorite is cashew, so I just buy those when I get nuts.

Ifa Mounds bar contains coconut, would that also make you feel like a nut?

When I buy eggs… I swap eggs between cartons. Get a few odd stares. Maybe try that with the nuts?

I hope you are doing this in the same size/class and brand of eggs….swapping extra large free range and medium conventional with a large price difference between the two may eventually get you a bit more than funny looks… (“what are you in for? Owe switching eggs around in cartons”)..:)

these days you gotta mix your own. Kroger sells cheap peanuts and has discount fruit. Dehydrate the fruit and mix with your ratio of nuts. Lot less sugar and lot less oil in your own blend.

Even within the same size range, there are variations, but the average size of a dozen should be very close. If you swap a few smaller ones from one carton with a few larger ones from another carton, you are stealing and could be prosecuted.

Man, I knew pilots were cheap, but switching eggs takes it to a new level.
I "switch eggs" in cartons, but only between cartons of the same type, size, and brand of eggs, and only if one or two of the eggs in the carton I want are cracked. Maybe that is what he is saying? Otherwise, I completely agree!

So that’s why when I check cartons, sometimes there a lot of cracked ones. Sabatoge
