PoA slowness?

Borderline unusable right now.

Are you on a party line? Yes, slow here too

Not sure what the argument is for forums over discord. Having managed forum software for a club for many years, it pains me to say it.

Lack of meaningful history search and topic groupings I think.

I agree, for "bullshizzing about airplanes" it'd be perfect.

Nope on both fronts. I didn't intend to hijack this thread though. Apologies to the moderators.

I think it merits a new topic honestly. I went looking for discord pilot groups a few months ago and was significantly underwhelmed. I'd appreciate a lesson instead of a nope.

Yeah, didn't imply it wasn't worthy of a chat, or to shut it down. Just didn't want to wax extensively on it here.

I think anyone would say if we were starting from zero Discord would be a no brainer. The tricky bit is shoehorning all the existing POA forum history into a new Discord.

Unsurprisingly forum providers aren't eager to help write migration tools, and the market is small enough that Discord doesn't need to.

Forums are great for history (and community) but that also makes them very hard to move - even between forum platforms/software providers.

Clean break or stick with the jankiness we all know & love tolerate.

Seriously, I’ve never been on discord and haven’t found a compelling case to jump there. The two forums I primarily frequent have an IRL component amongst the forum members that’s organic, despite my hatred of the word.

I don’t know if that’s standard among forums because most I’ve participated in seem to foster the interpersonal relationships.

Not a fan

Same.

Discord to me is a **** heap of cheap online communities. Maybe it's just the ones I've been to. It's also disproportionately GenZ (and younger) as well.

I think PoA with its gripes and groans is still pretty legit (thanks mods!).

You’re arguing over three ring binders vs notebooks. The software has nothing to do with the community. There were just as many inane forums in the old days; the software just got better.

Irl/digital, good people bad people; it’s just software dudes.

idk about that.

Today's social media sites, discord/meta/reddit anything are specifically designed to encourage you to enroll in as many eye-catching communities as will keep you on their platform. Cause ad loading is a thing and a KPI they report to investors (or plans for future enshi*ification). The result is lots of crappy, super low quality communities.

Communities built outside those ecosystems require at least a minimum level of interest to create an account and go somewhere else.

Though I digress, since this thread is still about speed!

You're right.

Upon further reflection, Meta, Reddit and Tencent don't care how many people log in each day. It's not at all connected to how much money they make or how much their companies are worth. The only thing they care about is serving up reliable, high quality communities, which is why they report that metric as a KPI on their 10-Q.

Compare that to PoA where we donate $ to keep it open, ad-free, and (mostly) fast.

The original question was "why" but (where is my fainting couch) it turned into something more, ah... pearl clutching, shall say?

Online communities are only as good as the people in them. Discord is a better solution than old school forums (like ZenForo, Vanilla, etc) on every measurable vector; cost, reliability, mobile support, extensibility, features, internationalization, search, security, uptime, performance, media support... but you can't get there from here so it's a non-starter.

I am on Discord and on POA and have nothing against either format. . . but they function entirely differently. Discord is more for real time chatting and video-calling than it is for storing information, and POA is the opposite.

I am sure discord is better right now on cost because they are still establishing themselves as something worth paying to access. Reliability...I have had plenty of weird issues with discord, especially when using their mobile app. I would not compare it to POA as some bastion of reliability. As far as mobile support, I would much rather access POA via my web browser on my phone than have to deal with the discord app because of how many missing notifications, missing messages, messages that never sent, issues with the discord app not seeing I was connected to data/internet despite everything else on my phone being able to access and use said connecticity, etc , that I have had to deal with using the discord app.

If I wasn't currently using POA on a browser on my phone, I would write more, but my fingers are getting tired of typing on my phone. POA isn't the best, but discord is certainly not a "drop-in" replacement for the forum software and doesn't even serve the same function as the current forum does. Just because both serve as social interaction sites does not make them equal or even equally good at fulfilling the same function.

One of the things I value about POA is its independence. There's no advertisers to worry about stepping on; no threads get nuked due to mentioning a product positive or negative. There's no app required. There's no subscription required. I can access it from any old browser, anywhere, on any device.

Discord is an easy way to have a "forum" for various groups - It started in gaming and has expanded from there. It's really easy if you have a YouTube channel or whatever to tell people to "Visit our Discord!"

But... I've found it really lacking in features that I like having here for having a discussion. I feel like it's more oriented towards short-form, what's-going-on-right-now type of content than "Hey, this might actually be useful to people in the future" and longer form stuff. It's more like Facebook than a forum. I haven't used it a whole heck of a lot, but my impression is that I wouldn't want to be coming back to it every day.

Forums are great for history (and community) but that also makes them very hard to move - even between forum platforms/software providers.

We have 20 years of history here. Often when I'm looking for an answer to something, I know it was answered here at some point so I'll either use the forum search or "site:pilotsofamerica.com <stuff I'm searching for>" on Google.

It's not that janky, and the slowness is not a result of this being a forum. I like the idea of using CloudFlare.

Also, are we hosted on Amazon or the like? If not, that would likely help somewhat as well.

More like hot air balloon speeds

Are the pages on a slow boat to China or something. Really bad this afternoon

So, like, what needs to be done to fix the brutal slowness issues we’ve been having for a while now? Do we need more pro pilots to quit and become IT professionals? Is Ryanb doing too much CFIng and not enough troubleshooting? Whadawegottado??!?

the cause of the problem is: knot in cables caused data stream to become twisted and kinked

With @jason's help, I looked at it a bit today. I was hoping I could just restart the server on a faster instance type, but it will be (only slightly) more complicated than that. The good news is that we know what the issue is, and the solution should cost the same or less than what we're doing now.

my dad would use clear plastic tubing when rebuilding player pianos.

One day a customer asked my dad why he used the clear plastic tubing instead of the original type of black rubber hose. He said it was so that he could see the air going through the tubing. She said "oh, ok" and left the room.

wait for it...

wait for it...

Eventually she came back in the room and "oh you!"

Those responsible have been sacked. You can go about your business, move along.

Did you also sack those that did the sacking?

All of my internet sites are slow, not just POA.

POA was completely down for a while this morning, presumably while George and company untwisted the wires.

Thanks to all who labor to keep this site running for the rest of us. :)

The site locked up for me for a little while this morning. Bot attack? Iranian cyber war?
