[NA] Since 182 buy fell through, ordered a Tesla Y

I had the tow package installed yesterday. Primary use will be a bike rack. Anyone have any experience? I understand it might interfere with cameras either preventing FSD altogether or triggering a bunch of alarms.

Buried somewhere in the manual is that FSD cannot be used if anything is attached to the bumper receiver. I’m not sure what happens if you give it a try regardless.

And on a related note, a hacker unexpectedly gained full control of 7000 robot vacuums in 24 countries, including camera and microphone access, and floorpans of the homes using them.
Tesla has a Bug Bounty program that pays cash rewards to ethical hackers who find and report vulnerabilities. They also participate in the Pwn2Own, an annual hacking competition hosted by Trend Micro's Zero Day initiative. Tesla has awarded prizes of as much of $200,000 and new cars for their discovery.

They must be doing something right as Teslas are consistently ranked as the least stolen cars in America. In the current rankings, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th place cars were Teslas based on the relative claim frequency index, on which they scored 1, 2, 2, and 5 on the index where 100 is the industry average. The most stolen car, the Camaro ZL1, scored 3,949 for comparison.

slight detour... not a diss on Tesla, just a detour.

"Tesla has a Bug Bounty program"

I'm reminded of a company (that shall remain nameless) that had a bounty program.... nice idea, but they overlooked how clever and greedy some programmers are. Some of the coders got together and planted coding errors so that others in the team could catch them (and collect the reward).

I'm assuming that Tesla is smarter than that.

On of my first assignments out of school was on a billing project at Pac Bell. Scott Adams left the project a couple months before I arrived. Apparently that project was the inspiration of much of his early material. I believe it!

I'm less a Tesla fanatic. Trip to DC, no problem, one stop. Trip to Destin, four stops. One stop all Starbucks bathrooms out of service. Next stop, no bathrooms anywhere, 11pm. My wife is full stop "no go" with Tesla.

Did you check for restroom availability on the screen with the Supercharger information?

Maybe not out of service, but they take your name and announce when ready for you, like showers at a truck stop?

In no way doubting your experience, but it’s a very far cry from our experiences on many road trips to date.

I'm sure some of this is user error/learning curve on my part. I've been trying to let the car decide the best stops. The Starbucks listed bathroom codes so I think that one was an anomaly - like some plumbing issue. I should have checked the 11pm stop beforehand.

Another example of something I'll override in the future: The charge before Atlanta was such I had to go through miserable Atlanta traffic to charge again. It would have been better to charge another 20% to get through Atlanta without stopping.

Can’t HAL give you best routing for traffic as well as alternate routing if you don’t like the initial one it gives you ?

HAL. Lol.

One of the reasons I'm hesitant to override is they have been tuning their algorithm for many years. The Atlanta stop had like 15 spots and most were open. In addition to traffic, I understand availability plays a role. That said, I'm nearly certain getting off the connector was a really bad idea.

I'm not getting my first color choice, but, I pick up my Model Y on Friday! It was a very confusing process which Tesla cleared up yesterday.
Wait til you try to get service… I had to take Tesla to civil court over service issue. Won case in 3 seconds. Had high voltage battery replaced under warrant. When done they parked my car and then tow it because they didn’t know whose car was parked in their parking lot!

Tax credit has a purchase price limit if over you aren’t getting the tax credit…. I found that out after getting X. Either way I didn’t buy for the credit so not disappointing.

Since I'm on a negativity roll :-)

V3 charging cords are very short. I have a 2 bike bike rack on the car. I have to be almost touching the charger with the bike rack for the cable to reach. This will be fun on the way home when my wife isn't with me to call out distance. Often there's a "side" charger but it's always been taken.

Anyone use extension cables? Grok says not recommended because of fire/overheating risk.

Well, it ain't perfect - Or at least, it doesn't know my preferences all that well. ;)

If I need to charge, it'll tell me - But I sometimes will specifically (manually) add a Supercharger to the route if I prefer to go to that one, and let it recalculate from there. One good reason to stretch it, especially up here in the great white north, is to drive for a while (which warms up the battery) before you stop to charge. That way you'll use more of your existing battery power putting miles behind you instead of creating waste heat to heat the battery up sooner.

Yeah, I wouldn't use an extension on a Supercharger. Try to get to V4 Superchargers if you can, the "side" charger if you can, or if there's enough free/open spaces, maybe you can take a few spaces and still plug in on the side, or take the one on the end and do the same depending on the configuration of the lot.

Opening up the Supercharger network to everyone else is going to make this change fairly quickly I'd think - Most EVs don't have their charge ports nearly as close to a corner of the car as Tesla does.

The birds nesting above my assigned parking spot must raid the Taco Bell garbage during they day based on what they're able to deposit on my car over night. Fake owls aren't doing the trick. You can play hawk sounds over Boombox if you leave the car in car wash mode (takes longer for the car to go to sleep). Would be cool if Tesla supported another parking mode where the car doesn't go to sleep. With all the connectivity, seems you shouldn't need a USB stick to upload a wav/mp3.

A couple more things I learned in this most recent trip when traveling w/ a bike rack:

1) A bike rack can make charging challenging as the cord may not reach the charging port. Charging pedestals are installed in many different configurations. As luck would have it, I thought pedestals were mostly directly behind the car which is the most problematic configuration. On my last stop the pedestals were between parking spots which worked very well.
2) It can take the car a while to figure out you have a bike rack reducing efficiency 10-15%. Charge 10-15% more than the recommended charge at your 1st stop or two and you might a) actually be able to make it to the next charger w/o being rerouted or b) possibly avoid an entire stop.

The Tesla chargers are normally between spots (ie on the lines) because of the location of Tesla charging ports, though most charging locations have one pedestal that's in the right spot if you nose in instead of backing in. They do tend to have very short cords, though!

Since the network has been opened to others, the newer V4 Superchargers have much longer cords. You can use a web site or app that differentiates between v2/v3/v4 to plan your trip if you really need the longer cords, though with the size of the rack you may also be able to just back in as close as possible very carefully.

Try https://supercharge.info/ or the Superchargers for Tesla app. The latter hasn't updated their pictures on the App Store, but the app itself does used different-colored pins for the different versions of Superchargers:
