MOSAIC Rule Today?

61kts stall speed; final rule supposed to be live today; one year phase in.

Well, at 61 kts clean stall, my 1979 Rockwell Commander 114A qualifies!

I am 53 kts Dirty and zero thrust and 60 kts clean zero thrust..

If it's 61 kts in landing configuration, then even some 210s would qualify. That may have been too far a reach... a 210L is 65clean and 57 dirty

210 is > 4 seats, is it not?

So what does it really mean, in layman's terms. Aircraft that meet the requirements now follow LSA rules?

Naturally my plane has a published clean stall speed of 59 kts.
Responding to my own post, the new 59 knot number for MOSAIC Sport Pilot privileges is proof that I’ve been a good fellow and kharma exists (I hope :-))

My CJ will exceed stall speed anyway, but would experimental exhibition be ineligible in any case since I don't even have a POH? Or would it be demonstrated stall speed on certification?

EAA’s site is updated with some good info, but it’s not verifiable with the final rule yet since it’s not published.

What remains to be seen is how insurers will welcome this change. I don’t know if they’re going to accept a DL as a medical as easily as most did BasicMed.

No change in the passenger rule (still 1 pax)
It's 1 passenger for people with a sports pilot certificate. If you have a PPL, you are now supposed to be able to fly a new LSA with 4 seats(and fill them all).

As far as I can tell, that is exactly like the proposal MOSAIC from 2 years ago.

If you have a PPL, you don’t need MOSAIC.

If you are PPL exercising the privileges of an SPL - you also have the limitations of SPL certificate (I.e. 1 PAX). It’s not a menu.

This has been sitting at the back of my mind. It appears this rule *may* turn a lot of the SEP fleet effectively into 2-seat Day VFR operations.

Isn't that how most of them are flown today?

Sure, but now that a DL medical can get you a 182, I fear that already price premiumed model will become even more so. We’re actively shopping for a 182 right now and I’ll know within a day or so how the seller’s are current sellers/market is reacting to this news.

It’s also why I wonder how the insurer’s are going to accept this change.

This topic is very prone to confuse "aircraft" (light sport aircraft) with "pilot license" (SPL, PPL, etc).
The way I read the prelim docs available... someone with a "Private Pilot License" should be able to enjoy all current privileges (night, IFR, no limit on #px???) in the newly defined "light sport aircraft" (i.e. MOSAIC, stall and seat limited)... and presumable do so on merely a drivers license "medical".

I suspect 172s will go up in value and Champs and the like may go down. All the guys who can barely get in a Champ who bought one to be able to fly with a DL will now want to buy a 172, Cherokee or similar to have a bigger airplane.

So is this basically only expanding privileges for Sport Pilots?
If I'm private (or greater) this has 0 impact on me, correct?

Likely correct presuming you choose not to exercise Sport Pilot privileges.

Not exactly.

Today, with your PP ticket, you could have an expired medical and still be able to fly an LSA: max weight 1320lb, only two seats, etc. With MOSAIC, you’ll be able to fly many more planes; heavier, four seats, faster, etc., without needing to get a medical.

With MOSAIC, the weight limitation is removed. GONE! In its place is a new set of limitations; the primary limitation will now be a “clean” stall speed (VS1) of 59 knots calibrated airspeed. Aircraft with up to four seats are now allowed, although sport pilots will still be limited to one passenger. Sport pilots are also now allowed to fly aircraft with controllable-pitch propellers and retractable landing gear, with the appropriate training and endorsements.

looks like 61 dirty for the aircraft to be classified as an LSA. But, 59 clean if you want to operate under the light sport pilot limitation. Looks like there is a difference between what stall speed allows LSA categorization and what stall speed is permitted for a pilot operating as a light sport pilot.
