Lets make Friday 'Joke Day'!

I used to fly a company who outsourced manufacturing to China…basically “here’s what you’re making, and here are the materials.”

At some point they noticed that there was an extra hole drilled in the product, and realized that the sample they provided had that hole drilled from an experiment that was rejected.

A buddy of mine is a EE who used to design after-market electronic ignitions. Not long after one of his modules went on the market, a Chinese company came out with a similar product. His company bought one and opened it up. His original design had an incorrect trace on the PWB, so during assembly a worker had to cut the trace and install a jumper wire to correct the problem. Yep, the Chinese version had the same error, the same cut trace, the same jumper wire. 100% piracy, warts and all.

Similar story: I worked for an industrial machine manufacturer. We had a piece of equipment we were considering getting built in China for the Asian market. Some reps from China came over for a visit. A couple months later their website was advertising a piece of equipment that looked exactly like the one they saw in our place. It looked exactly like ours, even the crack in the concrete floor. They had posted a pic of our machine, from our shop, on their site, with their name on it.

Every time the upper management guys thought about Chinese manufacturing, the rest of us would say, “They’re going to steal it!”, and every time they would say, “This time will be different.”

Sometimes at work, or when I'm out someplace, I'll get asked if I know a "dad joke". Which I kinda find a little annoying, because although I am pretty adorable and a bit old, I'm not a dad. Anyway, this is one that I sometimes pull out when that happens:

The construction foreman shows up at the site to size up the crew. A few of the guys he already knows, and assigns them to various pieces of heavy equipment. Some of the newer ones he tasks with helping with digging or other laborer jobs. But he sees one little fellow, and he doesn't quite know what to do with him. He thinks for a moment and says "Hiro, you're in charge of supplies".

Foreman comes back later in the day, and finds everything in great shape. He looks around, things are going well. But he asks "Where's Hiro?" Just as he finishes the sentence, Hiro jumps out from behind a truck, arms waving out, and yells "Supplies!!!"

I've never been asked by the same person to tell a second dad joke. :)

Well, it’s always good to have a spare for emergencies.
It's a good idea to keep a seat hanging on the wall behind the wood stove to carry out to the outhouse during the winter. Having something warm to sit on makes all the difference in sub-zero weather.
