Get your NOTAMS!

Flying Ron...I think I need to refer you back to FAR 91.103. You are MANDATED to get your NOTAMS applicable to every single flight. Sounds almost like you too are trying to justify not complying with an FAR. Be careful, someone might be reading!

Go to bed, it's getting late.

Really? So, to you getting arrested = being convicted? I'm a law abiding, independent citizen who is not afraid to exercise his rights. Now I'm gonna scare you even more than you already are. I used to work on nuclear power and weapons plants. Yep, I really, really did.

Just cause you were arrested doesn't mean you are a terrorist. What your employer thinks of you could be entirely different. but you obviously didn't have an LEGAL repercussions.

I have been asked several times in various interviews "have you ever been arrested?" Not "have you ever been convicted?" I had to answer truthfully that I have been arrested. Yeah my next thought was "So what?" but it doesn't matter - and the answer to "so what" is really up to the interviewer. Unless I am willing to lie, the answer is "yep" even though it didn't result in a conviction.

The most recent time that question was asked was during my interview with whichever government agency administers the trusted traveler program (Global Entry, etc). I think it is CBP. But I answered truthfully and they didn't bat an eyelash.

But it isn't quite correct to say that arrests don't matter.

As a former Facility Security Officer (responsible for managing folks security clearances at a site), your willingness to answer truthfully to things like this is more important than the things themselves (within reason). They are interested if you are vulnerable to blackmail.

That recalls a fun story. As polygraphs improved, and the examiners got better in the mid-70s, it got harder to trip up the box. One question always seemed to trip a lot of people up: "Have you ever stolen anything from an employer?" The question was worded right, and it had no negative stem(ex; when did you stop beating your wife?). Examiners started to expect a true positive on this question all the time. Then, the question was changed subtly and the results were dramatic: "Not counting office supplies, have you ever stolen anything from your employer?" The results were much better. But - it had a negative stem, which is bad form. So the question was changed again to a positive stem: "Have you ever stolen small office supplies from your employer?" That was finally the form they settled on back in the early 80s. Much simpler to answer 'yes'.

One could answer truthfully but not completely also. "Yeah I got picked up on a PI thing when I was at the beach one time but I got it dismissed." and not mention that you also got picked up for beating your wife and she refused to press charges, etc.

But then I presume the officer would have access to my arrest record and pick up on that serious omission?

Correct assumption and would at least get you a follow up.

This thread is great. I saw this as a test prep question and I thought, 'that is ridiculous'. How could they make a statement like that:

"Each pilot in command shall, before beginning a flight, become familiar with all available information concerning that flight"

"all available information" really?
"all available information" !! can't even get a 'beyond a reasonable doubt' qualifier thrown in there.

Based on this, no flight is ever legal. How could you ever have all available information.

I'm just a low time student pilot, but It seems I wasn't far off base in my initial reaction to '91.103 Preflight action', just based on NOTAMS alone.

On my second ppl training solo, I managed to catch a notam that my cfi did not. Completely changed the flight plan to another airport. This is not a pilot problem, nor an atc problem, but an faa problem. And if pilots miss the issue, then I would expect atc to back us up whenever possible with... hey, xyz is out of service... here is the information you need.

Understanding this is a necrothread but regardless...

In planning for yesterday's 176nm XC I got the below list of notams in my briefing the night before. I could've freakin' driven there faster then I could read and comprehend the entire list, 99.9% of which had nothing to do with my planned trip:

Part of the problem is the NOTAM system is still largely disfuctional based on it's rooting in the ancient teletype driven FSS system. L notams, D notams, give me a freaking break.
In addition, most pilots are woefully ignorant of how the system works. 90% of them don't have a clue what the Class II publication is.

Second problem is that when using the real FSS briefing, my experience tells me that you have less than a 50% chance of being infrormed of relevant NOTAMS even if you specifically ask for them.

Third problem is most briefing presentations SUCK badly for online presentation of NOTAMS.

The you get down to the underlying apathy where pilots don't do anymore weather investigation than looking out the window and the FAA hasn't taken to delivering NOTAMs to the doorstep that way.

That.

With where computer are now, it's amazing the NOTAM system hasn't been streamlined and simplified a little.

When I would plug into DUATS I would get reams of NOTAMs as is mentioned here. So I found it much simpler, even after the LM lockdown, to ask the briefer. I would be sure to confine to 50 nm of my route of flight. Make him do the work plus it's recorded.

Occasionally, during flight ATC would query if I was aware of this or that and even if I answered in the negative they would provide. Now if there is more than just me missing a particular NOTAM it is not likely the pilot in error.

This did happen to me several times when a NOTAM burst onto the scene and sometimes ATC would get kinda snotty about me not knowing. But that was very rare, most of those few times the ATC were quite accommodating. OTOH, I was able to go off freq to contact FSS about it and provide back their answer. But if it's 100s of pilots in a terminal area all having the same prob I can understand the controller getting miffed. But if the trend indicates it's the same thing over and over than it is likely the system at fault.

However, if the OP is miffed because he is encountering an inordinate amount of careless pilots then he may have a genuine beef. We police our own or someone will do it for us.

Putting on my conspiricist hat, I wonder if the system is still the way it is because the FAA is withholding an upgrade in order to bolster there intent to receive more funding. I would not be surprised if it were even a little bit true.

I've always wondered about those NOTAMs like, Temporary crane 120 feet right of centerline, 4,000 feet distant from rwy, 184 feet.

Who cannot outclimb a crane and/or maintain the CL and if they can't they are likely confined to day VFR. I suppose they have to disseminate lest the estate of the idiot pilot sue.

That.

Have you ever known a computer system that resulted in less paperwork when implemented by government? LOL. Right. Hell most of the time it doesn't happen in the private sector either.

Welcome to being a pilot...how many NTSB reports end with 'Pilot error'?

I am older than dirt. But even I find it easy to use DUATS and skim the notams for my flight. Those who will not spend the 5 minutes it takes to check the weather and notams deserves what the FAA gives them.
One local guy did not for a local flight, within 20 miles of home airport, and flew into the vice presidents no fly zone (which only lasted 2 hours - just long enough to pick up the bag of checks, give a ten minute speech, and split)
As much as I hate scumbag politicians I hate the lazy and incompetent even worse.

Perhaps this is simplistic question, but why can't we simply use Foreflight to check NOTAMs?

Seems to me it has a pretty good way to check.

Agreed. Altimeter, Wind, Sky Conditions, and Temporary Conditions- that's all an ATIS should have.

Let's not confuse an ATIS and an AWOS.

Automated Terminal Information System - Terminal information
Automated Weather Observation System - Weather information

Sign up at DUAT.com (not duats with an "S").

When you enter all your flight plan info. (including route), it will spew the usual notam list (which you'll review). At the bottom, there is an option to "PUSH" this briefing to an e-mail and the lead time. I push it one hour before flight (usually as I'm briefing to an account my phone has access to) and have a Notam copy on board with me as well.

I used to use DoPDF (a print driver that converts screen info to PDF) to capture the Notams. I take long trips and want ALL the route info available in the cockpit. This program is great for your FP with winds aloft option as well.

EDIT: This technique has come in handy during diversions or unplanned stops.

Except that DUAT(s) does not include all the TFRs that may be active. (They don't give you the "Stadium TFRs)

Have you guys tried the new FSS website? www.1800wxbrief.com/Website

It lets you save frequently used flight plans. It displays NOTAMS, sigmets, airmets, TFR's, and other significant info along your route of flight, including a DEFINED CORRIDOR WIDTH. IT graphically displays the location of each notam item on the map overlaid with your route of flight. You can also file directly from the page, and it goes into the system faster, since it bypasses DUATS. The flight planner selects altitudes based on winds aloft forecast and direction of flight.

It's the best briefing system that I've seen so far. I'm pretty sure no one knows it exists.

I have had several issues with ATC not knowing and following NOTAMS. My home 'drome is EYE, which is under the shelf of IND's C airspace. The localizer 21 requires ADF or Radar services because you have to identify the final approach fix, AIRPA, which is the LOM. http://flightaware.com/resources/airport/EYE/IAP/LOC+RWY+21/pdf AIRPA has been NOTAMed out of service, and will be out for a long time, if not permanently. Last night, flying in under an IFR plan (and in actual IFR conditions), I was cleared for the LOC 21 approach, and I specifically advised the ATC that AIRPA was NOTAMed out of service, and that I would therefore need him to call AIRPA, since I am /U. Not five minutes later, he tells me, "Frequency Change Approved," and said something about canceling in the air or on the ground, which I don't understand. I look over to the CFII, and I asked him what that was all about. In a few minutes notice it looks like I have passed AIRPA. So, I asked the controller, "Hey, have we made it to AIRPA yet?" He responded, "Oh, yeah, sorry. You're at AIRPA." Thanks. I start my clock, but it's obvious I missed the final approach fix. At that point, we were out of the clouds, and EYE is super easy to spot (or at least the big reservoir adjacent to it is), but it was really annoying because I need to work on my LOC approach skills. Oh, well. And this is typical for IND approach controllers (not the forgetting after have reminded them, but the fact that they don't seem to know that it's NOTAMed out of service unless I tell them, and then they respond, "Oh, yeah, that's right.").

Here is a standard briefing for a 15 minute flight from KAPA to KBJC.

Which of these silly useless NOTAMs do you want me to memorize? Maybe the taxiway NOTAM at KPUB?
I'll take your word for it

1d91d90e1a66fb9fb19a645fb3bf9ff8.jpg

Maybe the FAA *likes* a hard to use, obfuscated system. If compliance is almost impossible to achieve, they can always find something to hang on you in any given flight...if they want to.

I'm obviously not communicating very well. Its been a while I know but I will try this again. When a pilot flies from Point A to Point B, there is no reason why he/she cannot get the NOTAMS for the destination airport. NONE! Getting the NOTAMS for every airport in between and/or within a certain circumference of your flight is a tad bit silly. It is EXTREMELY easy to get only the NOTAMS you need. Google Airnav.com, click airports, put in your destination identifier, and look for the NOTAMS. Yes, it is ALWAYS up to date! Voila!

Can anyone tell me why the majority of pilots do NOT get their NOTAMS applicable to their flight before flying?

How did you determine the majority of pilots do NOT get NOTAMs applicable to their flight before flying?

because I'm an air traffic controller and VERY few have the NOTAMS!

I was flying a C172 or C182 into KPHX one late evening arriving after 11pm. There were NOTAMS stating the middle and south runways would close at 11pm for construction so I expected the north runway and a long taxi to the FBO. ATC had to constantly remind airline pilots about the NOTAMS since they kept asking for the other runways.

It was likely on the ATIS as well. I expect most of those pilots who requested the closed runways reported having the ATIS, many with a single transmission.

I landed at an airport and they told me they are closing the only suitable runway for repaving in 2 days. I told them I didn't see a NOTAM, they said FAA won't accept them more than 1 day in advance. What the &)$@?

Truly, many airports update atis every few minutes and make it nearly impossible to keep up.
Also many airports seem to open and close runways very quickly, and I quite often find a runway reopened by the time I am ready to use it.

If ATIS X indicates runway NN is closed and a pilot reports having information X with a request for runway NN the probability is high that he didn't actually listen to the full ATIS.

How many flights have you worked? How many of those didn't have NOTAMs? How was it discovered they didn't have NOTAMs?
Posts that contain three or more sentences that are all questions are obviously trolling and should result in an automatic 30 day suspension.

As a habit, before every flight I call FSS. I usually have already gotten wx online, and tell them so. But I do specifically ask for any last minute TFR's, and any NOTAMS affecting a VFR departure from my departure airport, my route of flight, and a VFR arrival into my destination. Rarely get more than a few, but have gotten some darn serious ones over the years.

It's just comforting to know that I asked for them and got the response on tape. It rarely takes more than 5 minutes all told.

Wrong. The runways open and close so fast at some airports it never hurts to ask (within reason. Busy at MCO we all know we'll get the east complex on the cworld arrival and the west complex on the piglt). That said, late at night it never hurts to ask.
When we check in with the atis we are almost guaranteed to be two behind. Many airports change the atis so fast it's unreasonable to be current. By the way, we never listen to atis. We read it.
