I may need a new car battery....

Just replaced the battery in my truck. $275.00 installed ... o_O

My first thought when I saw your photo: A bottle of warm Coca Cola and an old toothbrush.

So... what does it cost to install a battery?

I'd pay to do it on our i3. Presumably our EQS too. The Subaru I can do in like 2 minutes.

I have one of those that my dad gave me as a kid
I’m sure it still works.
So... what does it cost to install a battery?
In my experience, nothing. On the rare occasions I’ve had someone else install one, it’s always been the place I bought it from and they installed it and took the old one fo’ free.

mmmkay. What's the price differential between the place that installs it for you and the place that only sells batteries?

Keep in mind the necessity of keeping the top of the battery clean to prevent dirt & grime from creating a path for electrical discharge.

Dirt & corrosion buildup can create a conductive connection between the positive & negative terminals, allowing current to flow across the battery case & gradually discharge the battery ...

I've always wondered why cars stick with those ****ty lead posts. Trucks (as in big trucks, not pickups), airplanes, motorcycles, tractors... all use bolt down lugs that are infinitely better in every way.

It be much worse if those anti corrosion felt pads weren't there.
Yes by the looks of the terminals that battery has been in there for a while, It might be time to replace it? Do a load test?

A few months ago we noticed my wife's Cad XT5 wasn't shutting down at stops anymore.
It was because she needed a battery. A AGM battery that listed at near 300 bucks!
Luckily I got it for close to 200 bucks as we have business account at O reillys. This was on a Sunday as I usually buy all of our battery's at work from Bill's Battery here locally. But they weren't open on Sundays.
It was the toughest battery I have ever replaced, especially as a first timer in this model SUV.
There is 10 pounds of crap on top of the battery that must disconnected and swung over to the side to get to the battery. And it is a large heavy battery.IMG_6034.jpeg

Can’t remember what vehicle, but saw a you tube once where the wheel and fender liner had to be removed for battery replacement.

Auxiliary battery on Wrangler JL. The other way is to remove the main battery, remove the main fuse panel/power distribution block, disconnect four or five major connectors, remove an access panel, and replace the aux battery. And, when you replace the main you must replace the aux as a bad aux will quickly kill a new main battery.

I bet this is why the battery store stopped installing battery's for free.
I don't think they install at all now a days?
I saw a notice about BMW needing a re program when getting a new battery at the battery store.

The Mercedes I had for a while had a regular sized 12V car battery under the hood, and one about double that size at the front of the trunk behind the rear seat. That was a joy to replace.

Daughter and son in law have a Chrysler Pacifica. New battery was ~$475 from dealer. ~$250 from private shop. But now, part of their convenience features don't work because that requires a dealer reprogram. And apparently, just hooking up a seperate battery to keep it powered during the switch doesn't help either. It's a security "feature".

Dodge Journey is one. Even with the wheel and fender liner out of the way, it's still not fun.
Brush it down and grease her up
That. I use white Lithium grease on the terminals.

You want corrosion? I'll give you corrosion. I had a 9 a.m. meeting in Pescadero. That means driving through the North Bay at 5 a.m. before the traffic builds and working out at the local 24 Hour in Mountain View. I leave around six thirty and go to start my car and nothing. I pop the hood, and notice that the positive terminal had split from corrosion. Split. The battery itself was fine.

It's too early for a garage to be open, and I'm nowhere near anything that resembles a hardware store. Jose the facility guy arrives a while later and I had this inspiration. I don't know if his name was actually Jose or not but he looked like a Jose so that's what I'll call him. I managed to talk him in to loaning me a pair of vice grips, so I just mashed the cable to the terminal with the vice grips and was happily on my way. Made my meeting, and a lunch stop in Vacaville. When I got to the office, the vice grips were pretty fried so I had admin buy a set of new ones and mail them back to Jose at the gym. But I didn't call him Jose because I didn't actually know his name. I just said facilities guy.

Does no one, especially pilots, do some basic inspections on their cars once in a while? Fluid levels, brake wear, batteries, accessory drive belts, tires and mounting hardware? Stuff is run to failure.

Which is why the feds mandate annual inspections on airplanes. Without those, the same stuff would be happening with aircraft. Run to failure. As it is, too many mags, vac pumps and alternators are ignored until they quit.
