Negative. Have thought about finding a way to do this, but as far as I can tell there are no cheap ways. Moreover, I usually fly IFR, and need to listen for instructions/handoffs/amendments to route from ATC.

Yep, I largely fly IFR. The number of interruptions to the music from ATC would make listening not very useful.

Yes. On a long cross-country when everyone is out flying on a Saturday or Sunday, I turn down the radio and turn up the tunes. Love my Bose A20.

XM smooth jazz all the time. Zulu automatically adjusts for radio. Don't mind the two together, on long trips there is little ATC contact.

Yup. Almost every flight. Podcasts also on long cross countries. Music is good in busy areas because the interruptions from ATC or other traffic doesn't really change the enjoyment of the music much. For this I keep the volume fairly low and the zulu set to not mute the music when the radio goes on. For podcasts, since they are spoken word, I set the zulu to mute the podcast when the radio receives and only listen in areas with few interruptions.

If you had a Cirrus this wouldn't be a problem:). There's a setting on the audio panel to auto mute the music whenever someone talks on the radio.

I flown planes (including SR22) with audio panels with that capability. I find the music cutting in and out far more annoying than silence.

That's the problem though. The mute feature is constantly activating.

Same problem with many of the installed music systems.....every time I want to sing along with Waylon, it cuts out the music!

Personally, I only listen to music on VFR flights, using earbuds inside my David Clarks. Works well for me.

Enroute, I love listening to music. For some reason, ATC cutting in and out doesn't bother me a bit. I do turn it off in the terminal areas.

When the plane is equipped with XM, I do. One of my best memories from flying was a flight from Wichita to Omaha. I distinctly remember John Mellencamp on the radio as I was flying somewhere over the middle of nowhere. Somehow, it seemed to perfectly fit the part of the country I was flying over. I guess that's why he's classified as Heartland Rock.

As for those of you talking about needing to hear the radio for IFR, etc. Try flying in the mid-west in the middle of the night. It's so peaceful up there. After about an hour of silence, you start to feel the need to call up ATC just to make sure they're still there.

I don't use the auto mute much. I prefer to have the music on low all the time rather than normal volume cutting in and out all the time.

I don't, but I'm not opposed to it either. I do often, on a VFR flight, listen to AM talk radio using the ADF.

I remember flying my friend's Bonanza, way out over the desert listening to XM when James Taylor came on singing about "sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground". Made me laugh. My passenger didn't think it was so funny!

I do frequently. My RV-4 has an AM/FM/CD player I sometimes use, but more often I'm listening to my iPhone through Bluetooth with my Zulu2s or QT Halo with BluLink...though music quality with the Halo is poor.

I always turn music off when approaching the airport as I find it too distracting while I'm talking on radio, looking for traffic and setting up for landing. Never turn it on until after takeoff and enroute.

My audio panel has ICS mode that disables the auto-mute. You may want to check and see if yours does too. Makes a world of difference.

i'm still too new of a pilot and my terminal area where i'm based is pretty busy usually with a lot of airports, targets, etc going on and tight airspace due to the B over us and all the D surface areas, so situational awareness for this new guy needs to be at 100%. once i'm 30nm away, I suppose I could, but most of my flying is only 100nm or so each way, so by the time i'm clear of the heavy traffic area, there really isn't that long before i'd have to start tuning the destination ASOS, CTAF, etc. so there's maybe 20-30 minutes of relative peace. If I went and did a long solo CC, then sure, I'd just set automute so that i could still hear the FF calls.

Actually, music isn't as much of a distraction as you would think. Just set the volume to back ground level. And then the audio panel or the headset so that any transmission or intercom doesn't interrup the music. For my PMA 450 audio panel, I set the "mute" mode to Karaoke, then have the volume to where I can enjoy the music, but does not mask ATC.

A little bit of Fran Sinatra, Wierd Al, some Ska, Classic Rock, Spike Jones and his City Slickers make the long XC's not feel so long.

I used to because the XM preview channel used to play music interspersed with commercials. Now it's just constant commercials.

Yes, through my iPad, which has thousands of songs saved on it...

I once made a playlist, for flying, that represented my dark sense of humor:

John Denver, Jim Croce, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Otis Redding, Patsy Cline, Aaliyah, Glen Miller, etc...to my surprise, every passenger that I've played it for has, within a couple of songs, figured out what I was up to...
