Barefoot Bandit taken into custody.

That will get plead out in the first 5 minutes of negotiations, especially since he wasn't caught with it in the US. The Bahamians have different rules to play by than the US, and I doubt they want to keep him. If he didn't threaten them with it, I doubt it'll be a major hurdle. He'll probably come to court in NW Washington and considering the people who make up juries for the most part, I doubt it's something the prosecutor is wanting to go to court over.

mmmm thats not my experience after 21 years handling criminal cases. He ain't gonna get life but 7-9 months doesn't seem realistic in my experience. Can't say what would happen in the bahamas

$300 fine and a trip home when the boat he stole had the engine shot out to stop him? Much less he damaged other boats trying to steal them and robbed a a restaurant on the island.

I'll tell ya. The kid's gonna skate.

I've got $20 says he's out of custody in under 1 year and off probation by the time he's 30.

Well, we know what happened, "$300 fine and get out of our country." In California, Grand Theft Auto is 45 days.

And likely back stealing stuff within a year of release or after his movie starts making money.

Hopefully, there are enough jurisdictions after him that one of them will push for a stiff penalty.

The Bahamians prolly got some pressure, real or implied, to let the US & FBI handle the kid.

The lawyer is telling him and Mom right now, "You'll plead guilty. Serve a year in Club Fed, and make $nn million on the movie and the book. Maybe we'll get you a TV reality show."

I thought a law went through some years back denying them the ability to profit from this beyond IIRC the amount of restitution he has to pay. IOW, he can't make a net gain off it.

Besides, even without the TV and movie... money, A year in Club fed, a year from all the other jurisdictions all to be served concurrently is a hell of a deal all on its own and I think in this case a very possible one given a long enough probationary oversite. I don't think anyone really wants this one because it makes the collective lot of them look very inept. The kid has been stealing planes local where he grew up for over a year now. The FBI couldn't, or couldn't be bothered to find a kid who is stealing potential terrorist weapons? How does that look considering how hard they screwed the pooch in the events leading up to 9/11? They look like they are still bungling idiots. The reality is that they are just really inept and stagnated in bureaucracy. I know plenty of federal agents from all the major branches, FBI, DEA, USMS, and while a lot of them are good people, they are not all the sharpest tools in the drawer. As for the Washington law enforcement contingent, nothing but Keystone Kops has entered my mind since I first became aware of this over a year ago. I wonder how hard they actually tried. But then again, how much time are you going to dedicate on a kid stealing from rich folks when you have meth labs to bust (again, another social cost of our continued failed war on drugs)? Taking on the bikers and their billion dollar enterprise of drugs and violence, or take on a kid who knows how to hide and knows the country who has caused a few insurance claims? Where is the time better spent?

I still say just castrate and release him, he's not worth the money to house him.

I promise you, the Bahamians needed no form of coercion to get rid of the kid. They caught him, they sent him home. Nothing for you Americans to be scared of in the Bahamas mon, our law enforcement works here, we keep you safe. Come on over and visit our beautiful Islands and casinos. We treat you nice even if you are a bad boy....

You are right. But I believe his Mom can profit from all this, as she is (legally) innocent of her son's crimes. And she is the one signing with the lawyers and press agents....

Ahh, she's gonna have to choose between the money and her son then, because if his defense uses his upbringing, she shares complicity. She's a real piece of work that broad...

. The FBI couldn't, or couldn't be bothered to find a kid who is stealing potential terrorist weapons?

He was stealing light G.A. aircraft which are effing worthless as far as terrorisim is concerned.

Remember January 5, 2002.

I'm talking about their rational, not reality. Remember P-40 and the DC ADIZ? They haven't been removed nor have small aircraft been exempted. They can't say in one case "They are a threat" and in another case say "They aren't a threat." The predominant way they treat small aircraft is as a threat.

Sure, but why feed / support the irrational fears?

You know what the media would do with your statement:

"Expert pilot warns of small aircraft being used by terrorists"

We have met the enemy and he is us.

Son of Sam Laws are State based, and not Federal. Many are being struck down on 1st amendment grounds and being re-written to add more consideration for 1st amendment protections.

According to Wikipedia, Federal cases get Son of Sam clauses as part of the plea bargain agreement for lighter sentences.

Report Sheds Light on Barefoot Bandit's Sad, Troubled Youth
...
The so-called "Barefoot Bandit," 19, captured this month in the Bahamas, was often alone and hungry growing up in squalor in Camano Island, Wash., according to The New York Times. He reportedly stole food from neighbors, bullied classmates and clashed severely with his mother, Pam Kohler, with whom he had an explosive relationship.

By age 10, officials were investigating whether he was being mistreated by his mother. By 12, he had been diagnosed with depression, attention deficit disorder and intermittent explosive disorder. And by 15, he and his mother had been visited by child-protective services at least a dozen times.

..
He was first arrested at 12. A social worker's report from that time sheds light on the family troubles. "Colton wants Mom to stop drinking and smoking, get a job and have food in the house," the report said. "Mom refuses."

Like somebody said, Mom is a piece of work.

There was a video of the kid trying to break free and run while they held him in the Bahamas. It's too bad he didn't land in somewhere like Nicaragua.

I will be POed if he gets off with a light sentence, but even if that happens it probably won't be long until he commits a kidnapping or something more severe and gets arrested again anyway. Eventually he'll find himself serving many years in prison, that's my bet. I feel sorry for him and his sad childhood, but not bad enough to let him skate for all the crap he's pulled.

His lawyer was on the news last night threatening to bankrupt any county that didn't agree to combine all the cases into a single case in Federal court. That would be like waving a red cape in front of me. Scumbag!

Hmm, links from hh devices not permitted just got home so try this one

I get my news from about 6 different sources in the hopes of minimizing the leanings of various agencies.....then I don't believe any of it!

When you consider the biased crap the MSNBC and CNN pump out Fox can seem fair and balanced. Many of the stories that Fox gets accused of being slanted on actually come from other credited sources. Its just that many of the left leaning complainers aren't diligent enough to look into and qualify their information. There are many sources for news, not just these major retail outlets.

I'll remember that when I become a state director of rural development.

So is what you are trying to make a point of is that MSNBC and CNN don't do that same sort of thing?
They do. But please read what you wrote above- I requoted it so you don't have to look for it. The incident I brought to your attention is hardly "fair and balanced" reporting is it? It shows that Fox is at least as biased as any other news organization. Fox did more that "qualify" their information- they edited the video so the woman said what they wanted her to say.

What does all this have to do with the Barefoot Bandit? Do we know whether he is a D or a R? Do we care?

He must be democrat, he has no conscience, and believes the world owes him a living. (share the wealth)
